WWF September 1993 Announcers

Recommended Posts

Guest Cole

Hey, I'm starting a diary (where I book September 1993 in WWF on...) and I've got all the information that I need except who the announcers were on Raw and Superstars.

I have a rough idea of Randy Savage, Bobby Heenan, Vince McMahon, Ron Bartlett and Gorilla Monsoon were all doing commentary at the time but in what shows...I don't know.

Thanks to anyone who can help me :)

Rob Bartlett was long gone by October. The main announce team for RAW for October 1993 would have been Vince, Lawler, and Savage. After Lawler was pulled off TV in November, I seem to rmember them shifting around a lot of guest announcers including Jim Cornette, Johnny Polo and Bastion Booger a few times. The syndicated shows were Jim Ross and Gorilla Monsoon, with occaisional fill ins from Johnny Polo.

Ok, I'm hoping you meant September when you said October because thats what I was asking about.

In September 93, Vince, Savage and Heenan were doing Raw until Savage was "suspended" then it was Vince & Heenan until December 93

On Superstars it was Vince, Savage and Lawler in September, but Savage & Lawler both went around the same time and so I believe there were different co-hosts

Jim Ross & Bobby Heenan were doing Challenge until Heenan left, then Monsoon came back in

I remember seeing pictures of this. Vince and Booger were both holding microphones but I assumed it was just an interview. I think he may have been eating some of those dog biscuits in the shots.

RAW - Vince McMahon, Bobby Heenan & Randy Savage. Savage would soon be gone, and Heenan would be gone from the company in December. After that they had a Special Guest Commentator every week, either a wrestler or manager. They wouldn't get a permanent co-host until after Wrestlemania when Shawn Michaels took over the gig.

Superstars - Vince McMahon, Jerry Lawler & Randy Savage. Savage & Lawler were both out soon, and I believe they went down to a two-man team of Vince & Stan Lane or Gorilla & Lane after that.

All-American Wrestling - Gorilla Monsoon & Johnny Polo. Once Polo left, Dibiase took over his spot until probably the show's cancellation because I don't remember it airing too long (at least in Canada) after that. Gorilla & Dibiase were also doing Challenge, but I can't remember who was doing Challenge in Sept 1993. I think it was JR & Heenan, but I'm not sure. Heenan was definitely one, but it might have been Gorilla teaming with him instead of Ross.

Yes, JR and Heenan did it until Heenan left in December. Then Monsoon and Ross did it for a time, and eventually DiBiase came in to replace Ross, who had been fired, I believe.

So Wrestling Challenge was a big part of the WWF product? Looking at past results it seems to have had some higher profile matches in September 1993 compared to the other 2 shows...I figured it was just a recap show, re-airing matches from previous shows?

I guess i'm not right?

No, you are not. Wrestling Challenge and Superstars of Wrestling were equal to each other throughout most of their run. Superstars would get big matches and angles that would be reported on Challenge the following week, and vice versa.

Challenge still had unique matches and sometimes angles at the time too. as well as reshowing some thigns that happened on superstars (major angles that is )

I stopped watching around fall '93 until SummerSlam '96, but before that in the late '80s and early '90s, it seemed like Superstars got more stuff than Wrestling Challenge (although Challenge had some angle developments too).

All the big moments I remember from that time period were from Superstars. Still, I loved Challenge because that show had Gorilla and Heenan. Awesome stuff every week from those two.

Well, I have another question about WWF 1993 but it doesn't invovle Announcers.

I'm wondering what Tatanka's "End Of The Trail" move was...Is it the same thing as the tomahawk chop or is it a completley different move?

I thought Savage's WWE run ended sometime after Summerslam 94 (I swear he did some announcing stuff there)...

He worked as the "host" of the show at Summerslam '94. Which basically meant he introduced the show.

I have another question :P

Did Crush get injuried at the July 12th match against Yokozuna and then came back in October as a heel?

Is that above statement correct?

Savage's last RAW as announcer was on Nov. 8 and Heenan's last show was on Dec. 13. Savage returned to commentary on April 11. Vince was off tv from June 20 to his return on August 1. Gorilla and Ross filled in. Savage's last RAW for good was on Halloween.
