TNA's November 2005 PPV called "Genesis"

Does anyone else think TNA should establish some yearly PPV names like WWE does so TNA won't be looked at as "amateur" for their inconsistent PPV names? Or does anyone like this idea?

If Bound for Glory is to be their Wrestlemania, it seems counterproductive to have Victory Road II just a month afterwards. There's a reason why we didn't have WWF Wrestling Classic II.

If I was TNA, I'd have original names up to September 06, have Bound for Glory II the next month, then establish the rest of the yearly PPV names using the best 11 PPV names that they've previously come up with. I'd rather they pick and choose than give us Hard Justice every year.

I was never really a fan of the Victory Road name anyway. I don't really know why, but it just didn't seem like the title of a major event to me. Anyway, they've pretty much established that Bound for Glory, Slammiversary and LockDown will be annual events. So we've got April, June and October so far as the BIG events, which is good that they are not clustered. It's kinda like the old WWE schedule of January, March/April, June, August and November.

And since they know LD will be a regular event, next year they can build up the matches longer so that having them in a cage doesn't seem so anticlimatic (I can hope can't I?!). I have LD on DVD, but I still haven't finished it b/c the opening matches seem so silly being cage matches (I'm gonna get through it though, cuz I wanna see AJ/Abyss since I enjoyed their weekly PPV matches). If they insist on running an all cage PPV, they need to build EVERY match on the card for more than 4 weeks. It'd take some long term booking, but the top angles need to start brewing not too long after BFG, in January at the latest. Like either of the 2 AMW/XXX cages matches would have been good for a PPV like this. Those were building for months. Even the match that ended up closing the show this year, though I hear a good match, was left field. AJ was feuding with Daniels and Abyss was feuding with Hardy. If those had been in a cage, it would have made more sense. But that's Dusty's doing, so I digress...

I'm sure they'll be another one added, though I'm not sure which one. I'd recommend running the Super X tourney at Destination X (or at least make it X-D focused), but they shouldn't have the annuals so close together, so having DX in March and LD in April would be no good. It'd work if they had DX in January and kinda say we're starting every year with what separates us from everybody else. Do it like the old KotR's and run the tourney in one show (or at least the semi's and finals to save match quality) and run some other matches on the card too, but make the finals the ME. Then they could run qualifying matches on TV so that you still have the month of great matches like they had before Sacrifice.

The only other name I could see continuing was Against All Odds, but I think the 4th PPV should be a 'gimmick' PPV cuz the other ones all have something unique to make them regular. BFG is the "world series" end of the year bash, Slammiversary is the "celebration/KotM", LD is the violent mid-year blow off and then the 4th PPV. I guess they could run a gauntlet for the gold at AAO, but IMO that'd be too much like the Rumble.

If I was TNA, I'd call LockDown a failed experiment and never stage one again. It's pretty much considered a one match show (though Daniels/Skipper is good and quite underrated) which completely defeats the object of it being an all cage PPV. Of course they can improve on the structure but if they reduce the number of cage matches, then you're in danger of promoting it as a lesser to the original PPV. The only option, like TNABaddboi mentioned, is to make every match mean something but if TNA aren't up to task (which I don't think they are), then the PPV should just be killed off.

I'd drop the name Slammiversary too, just because it's a joke to everyone and the name TNA King of the Mountain is much more straightforward. Having a yearly KOTM match is really important though and whatever the name of the PPV, I hope they keep that tradition going.

I would too, but the problem is that TNA has always considered LockDown a success. I dunno what the buyrate was, but maybe it's because everyone thought it'd tank and after it aired it wasn't panned. It wasn't praised, but it wasn't panned. Which is probably because it was direclty after the worst PPV TNA's ever put on, so anything would have been an improvement at the time.

Either way, it's clear that they're bringing it back as they think it separates them from WWE (which it does, for good or for bad...lol). Everytime Banks writes in his column that BFG will be annual, he says something like "BFG, which we hope will become an annual event for TNA much like LockDown will be..." which I always thought was stupid because LockDown can't truly be considered an annual event until it happens more than once. Tragically, I know it will happen again though, so hopefully they at least do it right this time. As long as they never (or very, VERY) rarely have a cage match outside of that show and make it feel like a night of blow-offs, it could work I guess.

I may be in the majority, but I don't think the Slammiversary name is that bad. It's unique, you automatically get the point of the show from the same and it's definitely not as bad as Hard Justice, IMO. If they were going to roman numeral a show, I'd rather them do Slam than BFG b/c I think Slammiversary V sounds better than Bound for Glory V. LOL.

Ultimately a name of a ppv isnt going to make it less or more attractive to prospective ppv buyers, if you ask me. So with that said, Slammiversary is just fine, as is every other name. The main thing behind their ppv schedule is that they need at least a handful of the ppvs to have a concept behind them that makes them unique and not "just another show." This is a reason why Lockdown is, actually, a very good example of a show to keep and build to each year, sans with Slammiversary, and perhaps Destination X as well, to emphasize a focus that night on the X division - with perhaps the Ultimate X match only done once a year and on that show.

For what its worth, I think keeping Lockdown at a yearly ppv isnt a bad idea at all, but they could just change it up a little bit and instead of an all cage match ppv, make the main event every year something to the effect of the three tiered cage that WCW used to do - so their Hell in a Cell or something of sorts. Be creative and come up with a new concept for a cage match. While I wasnt blown away by last years LD ppv, it certainly could have been much worse and I think there is a solid chance that the booking committee right now, if they are still in tact by then, could put out a really interesting show. I always thought a ladder/cage match might be very cool, and thats one idea they could try implimenting next year.

I'm not completely against keeping LockDown around either. It's got a few things going for it...namely, the title is catchy, it's got a simple logo that it can easily be identified with (think the early WM or SummerSlam logos that were the same every year and became part of the branding) and it's got the hook: "the wrestling world goes on LockDown." They just need to book it better to make sure it's the huge deal they want it to be. It remains to be seen whether or not that happens. It should help that they know they're doing it again since if I remember correctly, the all cage format was a late decision from the Carters. The same way we can also start to see where they are going for BFG, we need to be able to see the path to LD early for it to be successful. The cage itself won't draw, but the cage ending all the feuds going on in the company might.

Better PPV names is key, in my opinion. I think BFG, LD, DX, and Slammiversary are all fine as TNA's big annual shows. All the other PPV names have been crap, even if the shows themselves might have been good.

BFG can be the Wrestlemania of TNA, and Slammiversary isn't a bad name since it ties into TNA's inception. Lockdown is a bit tricky with the all-cage thing. I think they should just have NO cage matches during the rest of the year. That way the cage match doesn't get played out, and Lockdown gets a reputation as TNA's annual hardcore bloodfest. Destination X should be worked in to showcase the Super X Tourny. Here's how they should have it:

April: Lockdown

June: Slammiversary

October: BFG (gets about four months of build)

January: Destination X (they could try to pull a fast one on the X Champ by having the tournament again this January, and set that up as the new time)

That's the perfect schedule for TNA's annual events IMO. They're spread out, so they each get some build and can have feud culiminate at them. I totally agree with your post Magus. If they're going to do an all-cage PPV, they definitely shouldn't have cage matches at all during the rest of the year and just pimp it as a barbaric night to settle it all.

And for D-X, if they want to feature Ultimate X, maybe they could do a 16-man Super X tourney instead of 8 and have the semi-finalists all meet in Utimate X at the PPV. By increase the field, they can have still have 8 matches on TV (the first round) and then do the second round and UX on the PPV, so you have 5 X Division matches on the PPV, which definitely makes it focused on the X-D, but still leaves room for a World Title match or tag title match. As long as they don't try to hang the trophy, they'll be in business.

Mine is mostly original names...

January - No Escape

February - Battlegrounds

March - On The Edge

April - Victory Road

May - The Thin Line

June - Black and White

July - All American

August - Hostile Intent

September - Bound For Glory

October - Desperate Measures

November - Prices Paid

December - Starstruck

Clearly "The Thin Line" is a horrible name, and could be replaced by LockDown. The big shows are Bound For Glory, Starstruck, and Victory Road, VR being a tournament.

BFG is TNA's Mania/Starrcade, it shouldn't be near WWE's supershow.

I like BFG in October, gives TNA a different "season". Don't like the names Black Sabbath (also legal issues there and it doesn't sound like a wrestling title). Darkness Falls? No. Battle Grounds, Hostile Intent and No Surrender are horrible and cheesy.

I'm not a fan of Slammiversary but it's already established as a title.

I believe TNA needs to reduce itself to a 7 PPV schedule.

January-Turning Point

March-Against All Odds

May-Destination X

June-Slammiversary

August-Lockdown

October-Bound For Glory

December-Final Resolution

I don't like any of those names. Prices Paid? All American? Black and White? (Black and Blue make a little more sense), Thin Line? On the Edge? Hostile Intent? Battlegrounds? Starstruck?

Ugh.

Maybe --- but Genesis is a much cooler name than Victory Road.

Only problem is that it doesn't work on a yearly basis.

When Darkness Falls to be technical. It's also a movie along with being a bad suggestion for a wrestling show title.

They announced on their website that December's PPV will once again be Turning Point, though they did not set a date for it yet. I guess it makes sense that they want to use that name ago since the original had a buzz of being one of the best shows TNA's ever produced. That's makes the confirmed annual events: LockDown (April), Slammiversary (June), Bound for Glory (October) and Turning Point (December). It's good that they have lost of time between Slam and BFG and between TP and LD, so that they can really build blowoffs at those shows.

I read on the official TNA forums that Victory Road will return in 2006, occupying the spot of the only PPV name being dropped (which is most likely Hard Justice in May).

Genesis could work as a yearly name, because if BFG is the Wrestlemania of TNA, that means (most likely) all the new booking plans go into effect post-BFG, so Genesis is the start of the new booking year.
