I don't play the game, but saw the link on another board, and thought it was pretty amusing.

In an absolutely bizarre turn of events, a virtual disease is spreading through the World of Warcraft servers, killing off characters everywhere it spreads. The disease is a direct result of a new in-game instance created by Blizzard, which appears to be working not quite how it was intended.

There is a little info over at Shacknews, but the basic gist is this:

Blizzard adds in a new instance, Zul'Gurub. Inside is the god of blood, Hakkar. Well, when you fight him he has a debuff called Corrputed Blood. It does like 250-350 damage to players and affects nearby players. The amazing thing is SOME PLAYERS have brought this disease (and it is a disease) back to the towns, outside of the instance. It starts spreading amongst the general population including npcs, who can out generate the damage. Some servers have gotten so bad that you can't go into the major cities without getting the plague (and anyone less than like level 50 nearly immediately die).

GM's even tried quarantining players in certain areas, but the players kept escaping the quarantine and infect other players.

It was pretty funny seeing hunters deliberately spread the plague in Orgrimmar. Being level 57 it barely did anything to me, but that 200 damage per second could just demolish a lowbie. I imagine there will be a patch today to fix that up.

There were discussions of getting one of our rogues infected and then sending him into either Stormwind or Ironforge.

I remember simply trying to just set up some auctions in Orgrmmar and the plague just starts hitting. I had to set down my healing stream totem to at least keep myself alive long enough to set up the auctions.

I'm betting they get a shit load of complaints from people who think it's not giving them their money's worth. I think it's hilarious to hear about, but I bet it would frustrate the hell out of me if it kept happening over and over again. =\

...This is just hilarious.

What makes it BETTER, is according to that, it was just isolated, and stupid fuckers started taking it everywhere infecting everyone around them. Thats not Blizzard's fault, thats the player's faults for being complete morons.

Go Blizzard!

How long does the affliction last? Are we talking 5 minutes like some of the spells or upto an hour?

Either way it sounds like it could be a nightmare for Blizzard customer service.
