I'm not saying you have to hate your crosstown rival, all i'm saying is having more than one favorite team is stupid, and that's how bandwagoners come about. You won't give a damn about the other team when they suck ass, while the OTHER team is having a great season. It's just not good.

I think it's okay to have two favorite teams as long as they're fairly mutually exclusive (i.e. not division rivals), like I have the Reds (grew up as fan) and Red Sox (he-who-shall-not-be-mentioned got me into Boston sports back in '98)

 

You won't give a damn about the other team when they suck ass, while the OTHER team is having a great season. It's just not good.

But then at least you have more going for you than if you have just one team

Hate to break it to you guys, but White Sox and the Cubs are not natural rivals.

You've been away from the area too long. Cubs-White Sox discussions are less than civil. And seeing as the Cubs are seemingly the only road team that draws at Comiskey, they've gotta count for something.

 

I'd say the Cardinals and Astros are the primary rivals for the Cubs, with the White Sox #3. (I'd rather see the Brewers be our #2 rival and let the Astros go fuck themselves in fifth place, but such is life.) To hear some White Sox fans, you'd think the Cubs were the main rival above the Twins and other AL teams.

The correct answer is "I have a favorite team (or two), and I cheer for whoever is playing against the Yankees." Because once they're beat, no one really cares much for the other team. But when they're up against the Yanks, rah rah and all that other stuff.

 

I've always grown up as a White Sox and Giants fan.

Really? It got that serious? As for the Cubs drawing in Comiskey...well it's easy for Cubs fans to make the 20-60 minute drive to Comiskey to watch the Cubs play there. I would think the White Sox's main rivals were the Twins and Indians, with the Cubs at #3.

White Sox fans were cheering like they won it all when the Marlins won the pennant. I know I've had a good row or two with White Sox fans. But really, it just seems like a lot of Sox fans care more about beating the Cubs than the Twins. That's what I see.

I don't think rivalries have the same umph like they use to. Hit a batter, the umpire warns both teams. Team can't retaliate or their pitcher and manager are tossed. I say let the teams fight if they want to.

I think dislike for a team naturally comes from them doing better than your team, so in the case of a team like the Met's, Yankee fans aren't exactly nervous that they'll become a better team or more popular. That's why it's easy to casually follow them, you can be indifferent when they actually do better because there's no feeling it'll last or grow.

 

Might be different elsewhere but I'd say that's how it works here. I still razz my friends who are Met fans, but I'm not gonna be cheering on the other team when 99% of the time it's totally inconsequential to what's happening with the Yanks.

I went through the game logs and discovered that Alex Rodriguez hit 19 home runs that either tied the game or put the Yankees in the lead.

Al dont you know there is an ESPN bias for Ortiz. If Espn played a fair amount of clips for Ortiz as well as Arod there wouldn't be any debate. Big homerun for Konerko especially since Ortiz just missed a 3 run homerun. Other than trade I dont know how Boston plans on improving their starting pitching. Who is even available via free agency. AJ Burnett?

I did a quick top ten. I used win shares to credit three for this year, two for last year and one for 2003. This puts weight on this year but also gives consideration to past performance, thus avoiding putting too much emphasis on flukes.
