Bored Posted November 8, 2005 Report Posted November 8, 2005 1. Bartolo Colon (17) 118 2. Mariano Rivera (8) 68 3. Johan Santana (3) 51 4. Cliff Lee 8 5. Mark Buehrle 5 6t. Jon Garland 1 6t. Kevin Millwood Everyone knows Johan Santana was the best pitcher in the A.L. but writers can't get over the win/loss record. How'd Cliff Lee get more votes than Buehrle?

How'd Cliff Lee get more votes than Buehrle? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Because of the win/loss records again. Lee compiled an 18-5 record, for the best winning percentage in the league. Mark Buehrle lost out because his type, inning eaters without dominant stuff, are always overlooked in these votes (see Wilbur Wood, 1971). I'm not going to gripe however, because Colon was a legitimate candidate.
Failed Bridge Posted November 8, 2005 Report Posted November 8, 2005 how bout we say to hell with the writers and do a TSM Cy Young award? We could do the same with MVP as well. I don't know how you would break down who would and would not be allowed to vote though. I don't want to see somebody like Downhome who never comes into the sports forum decide to vote this one time and have any part of the outcome.
Precious Roy Posted November 8, 2005 Report Posted November 8, 2005 I'm pretty sure I argued in this spot against a reliever winning, but seeing Colon actually win makes me rethink that and wish Rivera had won. C'est la vie

I remember the ballots being similar to the ones the sportswriters had, with 10 places for the league MVP's, 10 for Cy's, etc. EDIT: Found it. http://forums.thesmartmarks.com/index.php?...topic=61794&hl=
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted November 9, 2005 Report Posted November 9, 2005 Yeah. It's fun, but very time-consuming to tally those votes by hand.
CanadianChris Posted November 9, 2005 Report Posted November 9, 2005 Why is it that the baseball writers, who you would think should know better, look at wins over anything else? This isn't as bad as Randy Johnson getting overlooked last year, but it's right up there. Even if Clemens had kept his season going into September this year, I doubt he would've won the award over (presumably) Carpenter.
the pinjockey Posted November 9, 2005 Report Posted November 9, 2005 I'll tally them up if you want to set it up. Hooray for unemployment.
Matt Young Posted November 9, 2005 Report Posted November 9, 2005 Eh... Colon deserved it, but Buerhle should have finished 3rd for sure... maybe second, although that might be stretching it.
