I love how we're supposed to forget the five horrible years Penn St. had before this season.

A good way to guess how close a USC game is going to be is look how they played against that opponent last year.

Joe Pa recruited a lot of guys who just never developed. His quarterback the seasons before this one was a complete joke and the only reason he kept playing him was cause the back-up was even more pathetic. Happy Valley is not a good place, it's basically a shell hole. They can get a new coach, not going to change the fact that Penn St as an elite school will be one and done when Paterno leaves.

He had Robinson on the team, and still gave the bulk of the playing time to Zak Mills last year.

Mills was a senior. He deserved a chance to finish it out, even if he did suck. Not to mention Mills wasn't the only one who failed to develop. Pa lost a couple of defensive recruits to standards and injury. Last year was a dead year no matter what, so Mills should have just finished.

He recruited a very good class last year and this year so PSU should be back around.

Miami hadn't done much of note all year, which is why that jarring squash of Va Tech was really bizarre.

A couple weeks ago I was the first to mention the doomsday South Florida BCS scenario, but now I have an even more terrifying Big East scenario for the BCS. This is convoluted so bear with me. What if:

--West Virginia loses to both Pitt and South FL to finish 5-2 in league.

--South Florida loses at UConn and then beats WVU in the hurricane makeup game.

--Louisville squashes Cuse and UConn as they should.

Now you have four teams all tied at 5-2 in conf. and I have no idea who gets the tiebreaker. WVU would have lost to both Pitt and USF so they wouldn't have a tiebreaker over those teams. Pitt would have it over USF and WVU but U of L kicked their asses. U of L beat Pitt but lost to USF and WVU.

If that bizarro world scenario actually happened, who wins the conference?

Well, I have only picked USC to lose twice this year, and they won both (notre Dame and last night) both times I was ready to gloat and the fuckers won.

It would be 6-5 Pittsburgh.

Pitt and USF would both be 2-1 against co-champions, while Pitt would have the head-to-head tiebreaker with USF for beating them.

Just think Pittsburgh could be the worst team ever to go to a BCS game........

two years in a row!

Well, at least I think that's the case. If the Big East tiebreaking procedure isn't that complicated, then the Sugar Bowl would just get to take their pick.

Okay if Pitt would go to the BCS in that case I hope to God that doesn't happen. That'd be an even bigger farce than fucking South Florida. USF is at least a pretty solid team that lost a couple of games to some highly ranked teams (Miami, Penn St.).

I think if that doomsday scenario happened the Sugar Bowl would take whoever would be the most credible, which would be either U of L or WVU.

No, it's a bit more complicated than that. If none of the teams that are tied has swept the rest of the teams, the bid goes to whoever is ranked higher in the BCS. If neither team is ranked, THEN it goes to head-to-head ranking.

But, since both teams would presumably be unranked in the BCS, yes, Pitt would get the automatic bid.

Do you really think he can do that stuff in the NFL though?

I wonder what ESPN would be like if we had all this media during OU's 47 game win streak? Nobody will ever catch it so we'll never know I guess.

And oh yeah, anyone who tries to downgrade USC because of the game last night is retarded. Fresno State has wanted that game, and it was pretty much the culmination of the last few years' fascination with the mid-major teams. They were also playing with a LOT of their fans in the Coliseum. Not a majority, but loud enough to make it sound like a neutral site at times. And their coach had had all year (and was probably thinking about it before that) to prepare for it. They weathered the usual USC 3rd quarter blitzkrieg and came right back. Texas wishes it could play as well against the Trojans as Fresno State did last night. That team was possessed last night, I was kinda sad to see them come up short.

The rumor I hear now is that ABC is trying extremely hard to get PSU-ND in the Fiesta Bowl, and to work out a deal to make it happen with the Orange Bowl getting Ohio State and Virginia Tech. My guess is some money will definitely be exchanging hands if Notre Dame and Virginia Tech can both win their final games.

Honestly, while not the mega-draw of either of Penn State or Notre Dame, Ohio State/Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl would be absolutely bonkers. Those two schools will travel just as well as the others.

I'd actually say that all 4 schools are draws, even Virginia Tech with Marcus Vick up against one of the three traditional powers with an "Old School vs. New School" storyline.

I don't think you deserve to finish things off, if you aren't getting the job done. The freshmen have helped Penn St. and Robinson this year. However, Senior or not, you can't be afraid to pull a QB that ineffective.

This was a big problem for Joe up until this year, namely that he was too loyal to upperclassmen when he had underclassmen that could perform better.

I also wanted to comment on the post about Penn State being done as an elite school once Joe leaves, which I don't think is true at all. They're in a great state for football recruiting and are very near some fertile recruiting gounds as well, Ohio and Virginia, not to mention the Mid-Atlantic area which can be quite underrated as far as prospects go. Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley is probably going to be the successor to Paterno, so as long as he keeps the playcalling very far away from Jay Paterno, they'll be allright. They're a traditional program with a 100,000+ stadium and tons of contributing donors, so I doubt they'd fall off the face of the earth once Joe moves on...

To be fair to Paterno, though, there is a pretty good chance that Robinson would have been abysmal last year as the starting QB. It took him an extra year to get to the raw stage he was at this year. Being worse, with the complete lack of skill talent they had last year likely adds up to disaster. Granted it was a disaster anyway, but I don't think Robinson would have done much.

Wasn't Anthony Morelli one of the highest rated recruits at QB when PSU signed him up?

However, Joe Pa should call it a career after this season. I couldn't imagine a better way for him to go out. He beat the critics and got his redemption.

Yeah I remember they got Morelli away from Pitt at the last minute on signing day...

There a chance that anyone besides Texas, Miami, or USC could play for the national title?

Well...Miami is out of the running now. If Texas or USC lose a game, there's a small chance the computers could slide LSU or PSU into it but very small.

Miami is pretty much out of it now, with LSU and Penn State being the ones that could pounce if either USC or Texas loses before the postseason.

I think USC would possibly get some more leeway if they were to lose to UCLA, seeing as UCLA is ranked. If USC got blown out by UCLA however, it might be a different story. Texas on the other hand can't afford to lose to either a bad A&M team or to a mediocre North champion and expect to still be in the Rose Bowl.

If there's an upset lurking in the last 3 games between those 2, I think it's the Big XII title game between Texas and Colorado. There's going to be shitloads of pressure on Texas to win and get to the Rose Bowl, and Gary Barnett has beaten Texas in the conference championship before, if you remember the 2001 game and Mack's idiotic move of starting Chris Simms and watching him have one of his patented meltdowns before finally putting Major Applewhite in.

Yeah but why would he start anyone besides Vince Young? Mack Brown's meltdowns were QB related but he has Vince Young now and he is sure of Young and he knows how to coach and use Young.

Wow Vince Young is still in the lead on ESPN's Heisman Poll. I thought ESPN would be priming the throat for Bush cock after last night.
