...which is no one they can afford.

Can't they simply pay homage by having a night of great matches? At least that's more appropriate that Eugene/Simon Dean.

But is this anything that they wouldn't have done had Eddie not died? What's Eddies influence on this night? Hell, tonight I'll have my Eddie Tribute Dinner of Chicken and Mashed Potatoes along with my Eddie Tribute drink of ice cold water, and to follow it up, I'll watch my Eddie Tribute TV Show of LOST and point up to the sky every once in a while and pound my chest for the fallen Guerrero.

Well at the very least, I would expect highlights of Eddie's two shows on the DVD.

If he'll influence the actual matches, let's just wait and see.

Eddie wrestled in the indies from October 2001 to April 2002 surely he must have made friends with some low level indy guys.

But no surely Jay Lethal is more qualified to pay tribue to Eddie.

I'll make this clearification point before the contrary points come in. I don't really think that Gabe and ROH intentionally put "Eddie Guerrero Tribute Show" to make money. I think it's more of a hollow attempt to show they cared about Eddie (which they probably do) but didn't really want to put the effort in to adjusting the card or changing their plans and instead just labelled it "Eddie Tribute Show". I tend to think actions speak louder than words, and for now, this "Eddie Tribute Show" is just words. Like I said before, it's hollow. It's like wearing a ribbon. If the proceeds of this night are going to support his family, then fuck yeah, good for them. If it's just a label, then it's just a label. And part of me thinks that's actually worse than trying to make money off of it.

Oh puh - leaze, Eddie tribute spots on an Eddie tribute show were always a given. Its who's doing the spots that makes the difference.

I cant wait till the ROHbots start finding ways to talk about how much better a tribute show ROH did then WWE. :)

Even if they are giving the money the show raises to Eddie's family, they could have held off on this till they had time to plan a proper tribute show.

I need to hear that proceeds from the show go to Eddie's family for me to sign off on this.

If they dont then Cary is a douchebag, if an advertised wrestler refuses to work for free then he is a douchebag.

I fully expect that the money the show makes will go to Eddie's family though.

Gabe posted on the ROH board:

While Ring Of Honor will just be a brief footnote in the career of Eddie Guerrero, this class individual played a major role in the early days of ROH. Eddie Guerrero was one of the first men booked in ROH history. He was the perfect name for ROH to feature on its first show. He drew attention to ROH, he epitomized the style ROH wanted to showcase and he was a major influence on everyone that stepped in the ROH ring.

Ring Of Honor was fortunate to have Eddie Guerrero vs. Super Crazy as half of the double main event on its very first show. February 23rd, 2002 "The Era Of Honor Begins" was a huge success with a sellout crowd and outstanding card that immediately put ROH on the map with rave reviews. Much of that had to do with Eddie Guerrero. It was the unique Guerrero vs. Crazy bout that attracted the crowd and attention of the internet. The one/two punch of Guerrero vs. Crazy and the famous three-way pitting Low Ki vs. Bryan Danielson vs. Christopher Daniels immediately gave ROH the reputation as the place where highly-skilled, fast-paced, innovative wrestling would be put in the forefront. Putting on an outstanding match that night wasn't enough for Eddie. He insisted on cutting a locker room promo after the card for the home release. This promo is still among the greatest in ROH history.

Shortly after that first show, Guerrero re-signed with WWE and quickly won the Intercontinental Title. However, Guerrero had already agreed to be on ROH's third show, "A Night Of Appreciation," on April 27th, 2002. ROH promoters told Eddie that they understood if he could not make the date. Eddie told them that he was a man of his word and he would honor the commitment even if it meant missing a WWE show while Intercontinental Champion. Eddie was a humble man with class and dignity. He proved this with that emotional appearance on ROH's third event.

The show came at a time when Eddie was at the end of successfully overcoming some personal problems. ROH officials decided to use this event to honor Eddie for what he had given us and what he had overcome in his life. The entire ROH locker room wanted to show their appreciation and respect for his influence in the ring and honorable character outside the squared circle. Guerrero teamed with Amazing Red to defeat The SAT on that special event. He gave a speech after the match saying how much the Philadelphia fans meant to him as he left underground wrestling for the WWE. It was a night no one in attendance will ever forget. It created a bond with ROH and its fans. The tearful speech showed everyone that Eddie Guerrero is a very special individual.

Guerrero was the perfect name and athlete to kick start ROH's early success. It was on the back of Eddie Guerrero that ROH sold out its first show and drew the attention of the wrestling community. It was Eddie's passion and skill that pioneered the style you see today in ROH.

ROH will dedicate this Saturday's show to Eddie Guerrero. This isn't a ploy to sell tickets. The show will open with the locker room in the ring for a ten bell salute to Eddie Guerrero and after that it will be a regular ROH show. You aren't any less of an Eddie Guerrero fan if you don't attend. This is just our thank you to him and our way of showing respect to this great man and incredible wrestler. Eddie Guerrero has influenced us all. Eddie Guerrero will never be forgotten.

If it isn't a ploy to sell tickets, then make anybody buying tickets from now on get in for free.

Would anyone go to an ROH just because it's labeled as a Eddie Guerrero tribute show? Anyone that was planning on going to Long Island this weekend were already going...

I think people are getting way to fucking negative about this. Is it a marketing ploy to draw attention? Of course, is a BAD thing to do? not at all.

By "honoring", Eddie by keeping the exact same card that was booked last saturday night, it really means

"We're going to give a generic bell salute and maybe a couple workers will cut promos for the DVD release to pay homage to our fallen friend".

I'm not offended that ROH is doing this and It's not like they would've been the lone independent promotion to say "this show is dedicated to Eddie Guerrero".

also it's not just simply dedicating the show to Eddie, they changed the title of the show to "A Night of Tribute", they are selling the show and the video/dvd as a EDDIE GUERRERO show. Which is different from the show where they "dedicated" to Chris Candido but aside from that, it wasn't promoted or sold as a Candido tribute show. This weekend, will be at least promoted and sold as such.

Gabe and Cary can sacrifice the sales for this one DVD and give at least a percentage of the proceeds to Eddie's family or whatever charity is set up in his name. Also, sell the two shows with Eddie Guerrero as a package for fans to buy.

I'm not offended or bothered by them using Eddie's name here because I'm sure they actually mean well and aren't going to exploit it like some people like to think they are.

Also, ROH has connections all over the place, so you are telling me they couldn't call up a couple luchadors to work this show?

No one ever said they couldn't, the problem is that the show is happening in 2 days time and they haven't.

What also confuses me is that despite the fact that they make refernce to Eddie in the title of the show, you talk as if his memory isn't going to be a big part of the show.

And just to verify: if any other indy promotion took the same aproach to an Eddie tribute show that ROH has, I would complain then to.

The show is dedicated to Eddie. It isn't billed as a tribute to him. I think there's a difference there.

So it's not a night of tribute, it's a night of dedication. I guess Gabe must have got the name wrong.

Personally, I'm going to wait and see the results and show reports before I decide whether it deserves the name or not.

I think people are being too negative here. Jesus, all they are doing is a tribute to a fallen wrestler. It's not like people are suddenly going to go "OMEG!!!!! EDDIE TRIBUTE I MUST BUY TICKETS NOW" The card is still the same, the show will just have a more emotional feel.

If ROH doesn't do anything, a small group of people might call them classless. If they do something they are making money off of Eddie's death. Can't win either way.

It is kind of sad that when any sort of action occurs these days, people are usually quick to assume the worst possible.

I am not saying one way or another that I know what ROH's attentions are but that's the point. Nobody here knows. However, instead of taking things for face value which is the promotion is naming the show in honor of Eddie and all the wrestlers are wrestling in dedication of him, people just right away declare: "It's a money-making ploy."

Is changing the whole card to involves Eddie's friends the only way a promotion could pay tribute to him? That sounds like what you saying. Why can't a card for of wrestlers who have been inspired be Eddie, knew Eddie, or even wrestled Eddie (Low Ki for instance) wrestling in tribute of him be "good enough" for a tribute show? I have seen plenty of tributes in all areas where the some or all of the people paying tribute weren't friends with the person that died. It doesn't make their tribute any less heart felt or any more of a "money making ploy".

If you're going to do a tribute to him, and you aren't doing a match that involves people that were close to Eddie (which they don't have on that upcoming show), the only way they should avoid criticism is by one of these reasons:

A. A portion of all proceeds (including DVD sales) go to Eddie's family.

B. Actually do a match that's heavily influenced by Eddie's work, which they don't plan to do as mentioned by Gabe.

Why can't a card for of wrestlers who have been inspired be Eddie, knew Eddie, or even wrestled Eddie (Low Ki for instance) wrestling in tribute of him be "good enough" for a tribute show?

...because Gabe portrays Eddie as "the guy that sold tickets for us that one time", yet it was Eddie who honored the second appearance w/Red versus SAT, where he easily could've backed out and claimed that the WWE had him on a promotional appearance. I agree with Rudo's original sentiment that it isn't a ploy to sell tickets, but simply a hollow way of honoring him.
