KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas

Recommended Posts

I love System of a Down, actually... Daron's voice is the one that gets on my nerves sometimes, I don't like his shrieking in on contrasting with Serj's vocals.

Who's got lead voice on "BYOB"? All that "la-la-la-la-la-ooh-wee-ooh" is annoying.

In fact, I'll list the annoying vocal parts of that song.

"la-la-la-la-la-ooh-wee-ooh"

"BBWWAADOAYALWAYSENDAPOOOOR"

"AND WE ALL LIVE IN A FASCIST NAYYYYY-SHAWN!"

The last 2 lines you, ahem, quoted are Daron, the guitarist, doing fill-in vocals for Serj. His voice is too shrieky.

"BYOB" is a perfect example of what's good and what's bad about SOAD. The bad is fairly awful lyrics and annoying backing vocals by Daron, and the good is melodic and pretty damn heavy music with Serj's distinct voice. It's obvious that Daron, the bassist, and the drummer know what they're doing, and I love that they combined traditional Middle Eastern elements into their blend of metal, hardcore, and hard rock, but Serj's preaching is annoying. He's like Zach de la Rocha without the political knowledge or lyrical abilities (and I find de la Rocha's politics to be downright disturbing on a Michael Moore level).

nothing like college kids taking SOAD lyrics as gospel.

"WHY DO THEY ALWAYS SEND THE POOR, HUH? AND FEED US LIES FROM THE TABLECLOTH! GIVE US THE TRUTH!"

"It's so deep, when he says 'everybody's going to the party, have a real good time,' it really says a lot about America."

Link, he come to town

Come to save the Princess Zelda

Ganon took her away

Now the children don’t play

But they will when Link saves the day

Hallelujah!

I kinda like "BYOB" lyrically in the sense that the verses are preaching about the various injustices the US government performs to the American citizens, and then the chorus is "everybody's going to the party, have a real good time" since that's the mindstate people are in (ie. "who cares that we're being fucked over, let's all just have fun" and such), but Serj REALLY needs to stop preaching so damn much.

I get the feeling he'd like to turn them into the rock opera Rage against the Machine.

BYOB had to be one of the most overplayed rock songs in history. It seemed like they played that song every 20 minutes.

Actually, I was going to make a note of it that at least Serj and System of a Down actually DO something with what they're talking about, instead of just talking/bitchbing about it like Zack dela Rocha did with Rage. Ironically enough, Serj joined with Tom Morello from Rage and formed this group: http://www.axisofjustice.org/ to inform and fight social injustice around the world, as well as holding numerous fundraisers and benefits for good causes. Here was one such show: http://www.anca.org/press_releases/press_r...es.php?prid=524

So yeah, at least he tries to practice what he preaches, although I can understand how that'd be annoying to some people..

That is pretty true. Thus why I love the first album lyrically more than the rest. Oh sure it had its political messages and all, but they were written in a much more artistic fashion than the later albums. Even Toxicity had more nicer written lyrics, in comparison to songs that came out on later albums, like "Boom!", "B.Y.O.B", and "Hypnotize", all of which are coincidentally singles and the worst song on their respective albums (with the exception of "B.Y.O.B.", the worst song on Mesmerize is probably "Radio/Video")
