Booking Jimmy Hart as Bret Hart's manager

Recommended Posts

The night was of the PPV, SummerSlam 1993, about 2 months after former 5-time WWF Champion, Hulk Hogan was shown the door. At the time, the WWF was obviously trying to make Lex Luger a carbon-copy of The Hulkster. But, that eventually failed. Also at that time, Bret "The Hitman" Hart was in the mist of an intense feud with Jerry "The King" Lawler. They were supposed to meet at SummerSlam, after Lawler had ruined Bret's KOTR Coronation. The match time was coming up. Mean Gene was standing by with The Hitman, and Bret Hart had a big surprise for his fans.

Gene told Bret that the time for revenge was upon us. Bret responded by saying that before he could comment on his match with The King, he said he just struck a huge deal with someone, and that someone was gonna take both he & his brother, "The Rocket" Owen Hart straight to the top, and that man is none other than his NEW Manager, "The Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart. Jimmy Hart came in with megaphone in hand, and a new Hitman design on his signature outfit. Bret said that Jimmy will take both he & Owen to the top. Then, he went on to talk about Lawler by saying that The King will pay dearly for crossing him.

Grudge Match:

Bret Hart w/Jimmy Hart vs. Jerry Lawler

Bret's brothers, Owen & Bruce were sitting at ringside to watch the match. Bret made his entrance along with Jimmy Hart. Jerry Lawler came out on crutches, and claimed that he got into a car accident, and his knee got shattered, and was unable to compete, tonight. Lawler ripped into both Bret & Jimmy Hart before introducing his replacement, Doink The Clown. Bret fought Doink in a seesaw match-up that ended with Lawler jumping in and attacking Bret as he had Doink in the Sharpshooter. Lawler was faking his injurys from the start. WWF President, Jack Tunney came out and ruled that if Lawler doesn't get into the ring by the count of 10, he will be suspended for life. Bret vs. Lawler was on as Bret literally destroyed The King as Jimmy Hart egged Bret on via his megaphone. In the end, Bret locked Lawler in the the Sharpshooter, and never let go after King submitted, which resulted in a reverse decision win for Lawler. The King was carted out on a stretcher as The Harts, along with Jimmy Hart were visably upset.

Winner:Jerry Lawler by DQ!

The Backstory:Jimmy Hart orginally wanted to leave along with Hogan, but Vince McMahon offered him more money to stay, and manage Bret Hart.

In the aftermath of SummerSlam, The Harts, though upset, forged ahead as Jimmy Hart continued to manage Bret & Owen Hart. Prior to Survivor Series, Jimmy Hart led Bret & Owen into a tag team match against Well Dunn. The Hart Brothers got the win, as Bret won the match for his team with the Sharpshooter. At Survivor Series 1993, Jimmy Hart & Stu Hart led Bret, Owen, Bruce, & Keith into battle against Jerry Lawler, Shawn Michaels, & Well Dunn.

The Harts took down Lawler & his "Knights", one by one. Owen was the only Hart brother eliminated. Well Dunn was gone, and so was HBK. Bret Hart finally got his revenge on Lawler by eliminating him with the Sharpshooter. As the Harts celebrated, Owen returned and got into Bret's face, berating him for "keeping him in his shadow". This only served as an omen for things to come.

Despite their problems at Survivor Series, Bret & Owen finally patched up their differences to go after the Quebeccers & the tag team gold at the Royal Rumble.

One thing that I was thinking about the other day...

When the Hart Foundation first debuted in the WWF in the '80s with Jimmy Hart as their manager, was any connection made between Bret and Jimmy? Like, did the WWF claim that Jimmy and Bret were cousins or anything like that?

From everything I've seen, there was zero talk of that. It was mostly "Bret is Stu Hart's kid."

In the following weeks, Jimmy Hart continued to manage the Hart Brothers, leading up to Royal Rumble 1994. He led them both into battle against The Quebeccers for the WWF Tag Team Titles. The match was grueling one which saw The Quebeccers injure Bret's knee. The injury played a very important role in the outcome as Bret tried to put on the Sharpshooter. But, Bret's knee gave out on him, and the ref stopped the match due to injury. The Quebeccers retain because of this, and Owen was pissed. Owen took it out on his brother by berating him, and even kicking Bret's leg out from under him. Jimmy Hart tried to reason with Owen, but decided not to listen to him. As a matter of fact, Owen severed all ties with the Mouth of the South by nailing him with a right hand. Jimmy went down and out, as Owen left to a chorus of boos from the fans.

Later that night, Owen entered the Royal Rumble, and was eliminated. As the match went on, the question arose as to if Bret Hart would make it to the Rumble. That question was soon answered as Bret finally made his entrance along with Jimmy Hart. Bret Hart & Lex Luger went on to win the match by eliminating each other at the same time. WWF President, Jack Tunney arrived to rule that both Bret & Lex won the Royal Rumble, and that both men will go on to Wrestlemania 10 to challenge for the WWF Title.

So...what's the point of having Jimmy manage Bret again? You've just described what really happened, more or less. Besides, Jimmy Hart was a non-factor in the business at this point in his career. I really don't see him adding anything to the angle as it actually happened.

He was continuing his newfound career as a face manager. Jimmy turned face in 1993, so I decided, why not push him by managing one of the top faces in the WWF? The same thing happened, except Jimmy Hart was there.

Ok, but that doesn't really add anything to what actually happened. It's kind of like "What if Bret changed his ring colors from black and pink to black and RED?" Well yeah, it's a little different but it's essentially the same.

Instead of just adding Jimmy Hart as his manager, why not make it mean something? He could be introduced as his manager and they could play up Jimmy Hart's past relationship with Lawler in Memphis, which in 1993 the WWF would allow them to talk about to some extent. Jimmy could talk about how Lawler got him started in the business but they had a falling out, now Jimmy's there to help Bret, whatever. Maybe later down the road Jimmy could turn heel on Bret and join up with Lawler, maybe even reintroduce the Honky Tonk Man to join them as he and Lawler are cousins.

Or instead of having Jimmy join Bret, what if he joins Luger? The loss to Yokozuna made Hogan leave the WWF, now Hart's joined with Lex Luger to avenge the loss. He would also provide a foil for Jim Cornette.

I don't mean any of this as a flame, just constructive criticism. Having Jimmy manage Bret just for the sake of giving him something to do, without having it effect the storylines and angles any differently from what actually happened, really isn't that creative at all.
