Interesting debate from Ottawa

Recommended Posts

This is also happening in Boston's town centre:

The Christmas tree being put up is being referred to as a "holiday tree."

Thoughts?

Personally, while I don't find "Merry Christmas" posted to be offensive, I could see how it could be construed that way. A Holiday tree, however, is something that doesnt exist. Either call it a Christmas Tree or don't put it up.

I'm siding with the former, and our regular posters know what a hippie I am.

I get the same shit at work in a different way. We're not allowed to wish our customers a Merry Christmas but instead are told to say Happy Holidays. Nobody says the latter.

I think that's a totally different thing. I always say "Happy Holidays", which to me is just shorthand for "Merry Christmas/Happy Hannukah/enjoy whatever it is you celebrate - and a happy new year".

I'm not Christian, or Jewish, or am I a member of any religion for that matter. But calling a Christmas Tree a Holiday Tree is just plain stupid.

As stated above, what other holiday celebrated on DECEMBER 25th uses a tree for a symbol? HMMM! Not only that, but if it's about being sensitive to other religions, or whatever, than why don't we start calling Menorah's "Holiday Candle Holders" ?

Exactly! I've always said Happy Holidays, which could include Christmas, New Year's, or what have you.

Could an African-American not celebrate both Christmas and Kwanzaa?

Even many atheists celebrate Christmas.

I seem to remember Michelle Malkin writing an article about the "Happy Holidays" controversy last year. I seem to remember her somehow equating it with religious persecution suffered by Christians overseas.

Bill O'Reilly has been all up in arms over the holiday tree thing and then it turned out FOX was selling O'Reilly themed "holiday ornaments" on his website.

Link?

Not that I don't believe you, I'm just intrigued.

He is, as you know, a big blubbering vagina.

FOX changed the site after getting lambasted, but here's a Media Matters story about the debacle.

The thing I find most ironic is that you can hardly call Christmas a christian holiday anymore, seeing as the holiday has pretty much adopted many pagan symbols and customs. I mean honestly, I am hard-pressed to find a single person that I know of that will be sitting around discussing the birth of christ or even attending church for a christmas-related service.

Also isn't the word "Holiday" like saying "Holy-Day" anyway? I mean to me saying happy holidays is just acknowleding the holiday season and there is nothing wrong with it.

Michelle Malkin is striving to dethrone Ann Coulter as #1 extremist moron.
