2005-06 MLB Offseason Thread

Recommended Posts

Orioles are probably going to sign Ramon Hernandez, I guess they are planning to play Javy Lopez at 1B...stupid...or they are looking at trading him for

Steve Finley..that would be a nice complettion to that stupid Schilling/Finley/Harnisch trade for Glenn Davis.

BJ Surhoff isn't coming back either..he'll probably retire.

The O's are BJ-less! (no BJ Ryan or BJ Surhoff)

ugh.

Good, I don't want him here.

Also, the Nationals trading for Soriano is not a good idea.

Al, read your article.

A few minor points:

I think the prevailing notion is that Hanley Ramirez is going to start at SS. Joe Girardi has already comitted to getting Willingham back behind the plate and is going to give him special lessons this offseason, whatever that means.

As for the pitchers, while Vargas and Olsen are not established, they did pitch for the big club last year. Vargas did manage to throw a 1 run, CG effort, so he may respond well this year.

Overall - I agree. This is going to kill the franchise. Completely dead. But I also don't think they're going to lose 100 games next year.

I'd also like to add that the Marlins payroll for next season is currently $18 million. That's not a typo.

Joe Girardi has said they are looking to add some players at 2B and LF and that the payroll should settle around 30 million. Take that for what it's worth.

I'm just glad Wilkerson is out of the division, he murders the Phils.

And in that park, Wilkerson is going to put up some hefty numbers that should rival/better Soriano's. He slugged .498 w/ 32 HRs in the last year in Montreal and his career OBP is 45 points higher than Soriano.

Is Rondell White available?

Yeah.

And you can add Jeff Conine to the list of Florida Marlins who wont be next year, and apparently the Os are looking to bring him back to Baltimore.

This just gets worse and worse..

"We brought back Palmeiro who was a fan favorite for several years, look how well that turned out..why dont we bring back Jeff Conine?"

ugh

Reading on another board they were saying the Nats intend to play Soriano in LF, which would negate any value he brings by having a power bat at 2B. Don't know where they got it so there is no source for this, but it's something to consider.

Sweeney Murty is reporting the Yanks have offered arbitration to Bernie, Al Leiter (who they want back badley for some idiotic reason) and Ramiro Mendoza (ugh).

I Will assume that the Nats intend to play Soriano at SS..which he is a huge upgrade over Christian Guzman..

It is a big upgrade because Guzman is so bad, but defensively I can guarantee that they won't like what they get. Soriano's HR power is now gone until the Nats get a new park.

They've got Vidro, right? Soriano in left could be a defensive adventure.

Of course, major league hitters may get more of an extended look at them this year and they could regress in a hurry, once the scouting report gets passed around. It's hard to tell with small sample sizes and young pitchers.

I think hes athletic enough to play the outfield.

I think so too, but throwing the ball in? Ugh.

That Soriano deal is certainly an upgrade for the Rangers over the deal that had him going for a reliever.

Definitely.

Hmm..

Over on the Os hangout..rumor up about a trade:

Abreu for Bedard and Gibbons.

WTF?

The Os need a starting pitcher now, and Bedard is a key cog in next years rotation (along with Lopez, Cabrera and Chen).

Abreu is a slight upgrade to Gibbons, but not much enough to not only trade Gibbons but also Bedard. Not to mention the salary differential just between Abreu and Gibbons (11 million)..

I doubt this trade will happen, and I hope it doesn't..

Did Mendoza pitch an inning for the Yanks last year?

Also, is this some sort of record for trades in a Winter Meetings? I guess the FA pool was pretty shallow this year.

The O's need to stop thinking about winning now and put together a plan for a few years from now. They don't have their priorities straight.

Ken Rosenthal reports that the Jays get Lyle Overbay from the Brewers for David Bush, Gabe Gross and Zach Jackson.

EDIT: Toronto also gets a prospect in that deal.

Man, if the Blue Jays were in any other division besides the AL East, they might have a realistic shot at winning it.

As it is, they're probably going to be a really expensive 3rd place team.

I think they've got a fine shot at the Wild Card right now. They play Boston tough every year and the Yankees really haven't done anything to improve their team yet, so I can see them in 2nd (or possibly winning the division if everything falls their way).

Awesome deal by the Jays. Gross just isn't developing, Bush has serious attitude problems and i'm not sure who Zack Jackson is but who cares, our minor leagues are loaded with talent.
