Fan of a player but not the actual team?

Recommended Posts

I root for them because they are in OKC and all but I mean they aren't like a favorite or anything. I mean the Celtics are coming on Wednesday and I want to go to support the Celtics. I suppose you can't pick up visiting team merchandise...or can you?

I can't like the Senators because it doesn't work that way, but I do really like Jason Spezza. I always got frustrated with Jacques Martin not playing him, never understood that.

I don't like the Cowboys and I hate Oklahoma but I loves me some Roy Williams. I hated the Lakers but I loved Shaq. I still love Shaq, and I'm fine with Miami. I don't really like Texas, but I like Limas Sweed. You can't hate on someone whos name is Limas Sweed.

But the Celtics I'll like no matter who is putting on the green jersey(well as long as it's not Kobe).

Whoa, whoa, back up. This needs more attention. You wouldn't cheer for the Celtics -- a team you supposedly love right now -- just because they signed Kobe Bryant?

We need someone to spell out the complete rules of sports fandom.

I would hope the team still scored and won but I'd hope that it wasn't because of Kobe. I hate Kobe so much that I just can't back anything that he's involved in. The Celtics would have turned their back on me if they had Kobe.

I think that it's possible to root for the team to do well, and still hope the player does not. I had to do that when the Bruins had Josef Stumpel ... I wanted them to win every game, but I didn't want him to score or pick up any assists or anything. (I pretty much just wanted him to be nailed to the bench, and not even get much ice time.)

that doesn't make any sense, if he's helping your team win, yeah you don't have to root for him personally or anything, but not wanting him to even contribute? I hate TO, but if he helps the Bills win the Superbowl, I'm all for it...

I see your point, Lushus.

Let me try to re-word it: if I was given a choice between Stumpel scoring and helping the Bruins win, or Stumpel NOT scoring and the B's losing as a result, I'd take the former without a second thought. And if given the choice of the Bruins winning (and Stumpel getting no points & next-to-no ice time) or the Bruins winning and Stumpel picking up 3 assists, I'd choose the former.

TO doesn't fit into my Stumpel mold easily, since he's actually a good player and a difference maker. It'd be difficult for him to be on a team and not contribute.

heh, forgive my hockey ignorance, I dont know who Stumpel is and whether or not he's a difference maker...

I just kinda randomly threw TO out there...dude is a major headache, but I guess I can deal with it for at least one season if they win the Superbowl...then they can dump his ass...

No reason to apologize for not knowing Stumpel, Lushus. He's not well known, and not that good. I just happen to detest him, always have & always will, which is why I used him as my point of reference.

I really don't know how I'd react if a team that I liked picked up a player that I hated that was also a difference maker. Most likely I'd hate TO 6 days, plus 21 hours, each week, and then just like him for the three hours a week that he was helping the Pats win. Having said that, though, I have friends that are Eagles fans that are just glad to be rid of him. They'd obviously prefer to be winning games, but they're willing to lose some games now in order to rid themselves of TO forever.

I tend to not like a team based on players as much as dislike a team based on players, if that makes sense.

For example, the NY Giants are a team that I'm normally pretty apathetic about, but with Eli, Shockey and Strahan all there, I've grown to really dislike them these last few years. But there's not many random teams that I like purely for their players. I mean, I root for the Bears to do well, even though I really don't consider any of their players among my favorites ... I just naturally root for the team rather than against them.
