College Football - Bowl & Heisman Babbling

Recommended Posts

I hope Hawkins can do better than 7 wins a year. That's about what you got out of Barnett.

I am starting to question if the mid-major coach is always the best person to hire. I think they can improve your program, but make them a consistent Top 10 team. I think the jury's still out.

Until Leak is either gone from Florida or becomes more confortable with running the ball, Meyer's system will not work. Luckily, Florida just got a commitment one of the top players in the country in Tim Tebow who is a very good runner.

hockey_fan, you know, not to offend you as I respect your opinion and you know more about Florida than I do, but having Chris Leak in your signature while calling for his departure is pretty funny.

(I know you're not calling for it really, but more saying that the system doesn't fit Leak... but still...)

Urban Meyers? How has he done at Florida in comparison to Zook?

He had one 8-3 season.

A better example would be Jim Tressel at Ohio St. Won a National Championship his second season at Ohio St, after coming from Youngstown St.

SAN DIEGO -- Former Iowa quarterback Chuck Long is expected to become the next head coach at San Diego State after spending four seasons as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma.

Long's hiring could be announced as early as Saturday, barring any unforeseen glitches, two people familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity because a deal was still pending.

In Norman, Sooners coach Bob Stoops said Long was in San Diego for a second interview, adding that a deal had not been finalized.

Long, 42, has been on Stoops' staff for six seasons. He'll replace Tom Craft, who was fired on Dec. 5 after going 19-29 in four seasons, including 5-7 this year.

San Diego State athletic director Jeff Schemmel has refused to comment on candidates but said at the time of Craft's firing that he would hire a replacement "who can excite the community."

This hire has Iowa and Kansas State connections.

A month ago, after Kansas State's Bill Snyder retired, Long told reporters that he wasn't in a hurry to find a head coaching job because he was happy at Oklahoma, which played in the last two BCS national championship games.

Long was recruited to Iowa by Snyder, then an assistant to Hayden Fry. Stoops, who played at Iowa and was an assistant to Snyder at K-State in the early 1990s, said he recommended Long to Schemmel, who was part of the management team that hired Snyder as the Wildcats' coach in 1989.

Although this would be Long's first head coaching job, he has an extensive resume as a player and assistant coach.

While at Iowa, Long was runner-up to Bo Jackson for the 1985 Heisman Trophy in the closest vote in history. He guided the Hawkeyes to the Big Ten title and the Rose Bowl that season.

He was Oklahoma's passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach when the Sooners won the national championship in 2000 and was offensive coordinator when Jason White won the 2003 Heisman and when Adrian Peterson and White finished 2-3 last season.

Long got his coaching start at Iowa in 1995 after playing eight seasons in the NFL, with the Rams and Lions. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.

He will inherit a program that hasn't had a winning season since 1998, when it went 7-5 and played in the Las Vegas Bowl. The Aztecs have played in only two bowls in the last 15 seasons.

Coincidentally, Long will see plenty of San Diego in the coming weeks. Oklahoma will play Oregon in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 29, and the Sooners will practice at SDSU.

As his name would indicate, he's more obsessed with asses than passes.

Serious answer: His ego doesn't match his talent.

edit: Should be the other way around (talent doesn't match ego)

Agreed.

Evangel HS, which produced John David Booty, Josh Booty and Abram Booty of LSU, and Brock Berlin of Miami, has had some SERIOUS problems with their players not hacking it on the national level.

The problem is that the kids get a SERIOUS f'in attitude problem by playing at one of the top football factories within Louisiana, along with West Monroe, John Curtis, Catholic of Baton Rouge, St. Augustine of New Orleans, etc.

The difference is that I never hear of Catholic-BR players having a serious attitude problem, even though they produced some huge college stars like Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward, Falcons running back Warrick Dunn, and Texas Longhorns QB Major Applewhite.

Evangel players, though, seem to have a very high opinion of themselves, which tends to mean they try to force bad decisions as well as piss off their teammates. Witness the Miami team's comments about Brock Berlin over the last few years. (Granted, noted dickhead Kellen Winslow Jr. was the one making some of them...)

Dan Hawkins has done quite a lot with very little talent at BSU. If he can pull some decent recruits Colorado should win at least 7 games every year.

More power to Hawkins...

Taking a low-end team like Boise State from obscurity to multiple Top 25 finishes deserves to be rewarded.

I'm sorry to see him bailing on Boise but, despite being the capitol of Idaho, it's in the middle of goddamn nowhere and not the easiest place to recruit for...

If it was a school like TCU or Southern Miss, I'd have harder feelings about it because those are in prime recruiting areas and are around major cities (TCU is in Ft. Worth, next to Dallas, and Southern Miss is 1 hour north of the former metropolis of New Orleans).
