Guest bigm350 Report post Posted December 7, 2005 After reading that Eddy Guerrero piece that TroughofMantaur generously posted in the WWE folder, it really got me interested in getting a subscription to the Observer. That was an awesome piece. I never have read an actual Observer, and always assumed that a subscription would be expensive. Well, I was completely wrong. Only $11 for a month's worth, and $28 for a few months worth. That sounds like an awesome price range. I have a subscription to Sports Illustrated, and I can say, that it is not even worth having; since I never read through a SI issue, except maybe for a few articles here and there, and I'm going to cancel my subscription to them. That brings me to my question. How big is an average issue of the Observer? Also, how much coverage is dedicated to MMA, UFC, and Pride? I'm more of a wrestling fan than a fan of MMA, UFC, etc. Is there more coverage towards wrestling or towards MMA, etc.? Does Meltzer cover all promotions, Lucha Libre, and puroresu equally, for the most part, or is there more of a slant towards the WWE? Also, whats the easiest way to order? Cash, check, MO, or credit card?
Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2005 If I were you, I'd try the one month deal and see if you like it. I'll give you some positives and negatives. Positives - Best source for inside news and analysis of pro wrestling. Covers everything including, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, TNA, ROH, Indies. - End of the Year issue as well as his obituary/life of... are very good issues. Meltz eulogizes very well and while it sucks to be him, he does take on this morbid task very well. - Is a good source for analysis of the business side of pro wrestling and MMA. Negatives -Print is very small. I have good eyes, so this isn't too much of a problem, but I can see other people having issues with this. - He'll sometimes get a little MMA heavy if it's a slow news week. (if you don't like MMA, I do though) - His ratings for matches and opinions can get whacky. Not so much underrating matches as he does overrate quite a bit. As long as you don't take his opinions as scripture (I always encourage individual thought) and get it for the news and inside stuff and come to your own conclusions (Meltz's inside sources are usually spot on) than I think you'd enjoy it. My two cents.
Guest bigm350 Report post Posted December 7, 2005 Thanks Dangerous A. I think I'll take your advice and try the one month subscription deal. The positives seem to outweigh the negatives to me, and I have good eyesight , as well, so that's one negative that can be crossed off the list.
stahl 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2005 Issues are usually 12 pages or 18. The bigger issues are usually 24 (hall of fame, awards, etc). Format usually goes like this: Poll Talk of last big event/PPV Cover story Results Mexico Japan Indies/Here and there ROH TNA UFC Pride WWE WWE is usually 4-5 pages with TNA beign anywhere from half a page to a page and a half depending on news. Mexico is usually half a page or a page as well as the others (japan, etc) Here and there tends to usually be at least a page.
Guest drdrainoscott Report post Posted December 8, 2005 The newsletter is just so great...I barely watch any wrestling these days, due to numerous factors, but I look forward to reading the WON every week. I don't know what I would do without it

spman 0 Report post Posted December 8, 2005 When he does discounts and specials for new subscribers, WON is a great deal, but normally, I've always found it to be too expensive.
stahl 0 Report post Posted December 8, 2005 Considering the work that goes into it, its dirt cheap. He doesn't really have specials for new people that often, it's usually if you get more than 40 issues you can pick two past issues free.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted December 8, 2005 I will get it on a special occasion type deal, such as when the British Bulldog died or this past year right after the ECW PPV when he had all sorts of ECW stuff in an issue. A lot of it is focused on MMA, Japan, Mexico though, stuff I either haven't seen or am not interested in.
Guest drdrainoscott Report post Posted December 9, 2005 A lot of it is focused on MMA, Japan, Mexico though, stuff I either haven't seen or am not interested in. I wouldn't say that...at the most it is 50% devoted to those, leaving the other half for WWE, TNA and ROH. It is rare there is more than a page most about Mexico and only a couple pages for Japan.
