Iggy's (rough) College Basketball Rankings

Recommended Posts

Realized I didn't really know college basketball that well this year, so I decided to look over the resumes of the teams out there, and formulate some rough rankings. It's still too early in the season to really be able to say definitively who belongs where, but it's never too early for idle speculation. With that, here's what I was able to do with this year's teams.

1. Duke 8-0

2. Texas 8-0

3. Connecticut 6-0

4. Villanova 5-0

5. Florida 8-0

6. Memphis 6-1

7. Louisville 4-0

8. Washington 7-0

9. Illinois 8-0

10. Oklahoma 4-1

11. George Washington 5-0

12. Gonzaga 4-2

13. Michigan State 6-2

14. Michigan 6-0

15. UCLA 6-1

16. Nevada 6-0

17. Vanderbilt 5-0

18. Wake Forest 7-1

19. North Carolina 5-1

20. Boston College 6-1

21. Georgetown 3-1

22. Kentucky 6-2

23. NC State 5-1

24. Indiana State 4-0

25. Indiana 4-2

It is too early... :P I'm probably one of the biggest college bball losers here, and I've yet to see about 10 of those teams play yet. So, I don't really want to give my rankings yet.

But, why Duke at #1? Nevermind that they should have lost to VT, and haven't looked impressive at all this year... I'd really like to know why people rated them preseason #1. They have Redick, Williams, and a bunch of unproven freshmen. Plus, no real PG. And I'm not a Dook hater like seemingly every college fan is.

Indiana State ranked? I think that's a bit much after one home win over a mediocre Indiana team.

So far, (without seeing Texas play), I'd say Villanova is #1 at the moment. But, UConn has a big edge in talent over everyone else, especially when Marcus Williams is back in January.

I've just given up on arguing with the preseason consensus. Two years ago, I was talking all year about how overrated UConn was and by the end of the year, they were cutting down the nets. Last year, I kept talking about how Illinois was the real deal and it was ridiculous that so many people were trying to put Carolina ahead of them. Well, we saw how that turned out too.

This year, I'm just going with the crowd. For the record, I still can't remember Duke losing a big game when Shelden Williams stayed out of foul trouble. They were good enough to win the national title two years ago with Williams and Redick as the top scorers, and after this much maturing in Coach K's system, you have to consider Duke the favorites until someone knocks them off. Obviously, if Texas beats them on Saturday, I'll give them the top spot for now, but I really think that come April, Duke's going to win it all.

My Hoyas are in the top 25 bitches...but maybenot for too long with that loss to Illinois. It's not a terrible looking loss, being that they only lost by 10 in Illinois's homecourt.

Bucknell is better than Indiana St. If you want to rank a smaller school. They only lost to Villanova, one of the best friggin teams in the country (My number 1 team honestly, if you consider they're destroying people without Curtis Sumpter)

Iggy, it saddens me to say it but U of L isn't worth a shit right now. I know we were FF last year and 4-0 thus far (playing nobody...and struggling with some of the nobodies).

Truthfully I haven't seen anybody that screams "This is your title team" so far. Duke is very beatable, Texas can be beaten with a decent effort (WVU had them beat), UConn much the same too. Villanova has brilliant guards but I think a team with a really solid inside game and any sort of quality guards would take them down.

As far as the rest of it, let's see: Michigan sucks, Vandy sucks, Georgetown will get trashed in the BE, Indiana St. just beat IU but isn't any good particularly.

I feel dirty saying this, but Memphis is about the best team I've seen thus far.

Yeah, from what I'd seen of Louisville so far this year, they did look overrated, and I made sure to put them a couple spots lower than they are in the actual polls.

However, after watching Taquan Dean turn into a stone cold killer during the tournament last year, I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt in the seven spot for now. In the long run, I think they'll end up missing Garcia a lot, and the lack of balance will hurt the offense, but it's really hard to find legitimate Top Ten teams to put ahead of them at the top of the rankings.

Yes, but I believe Sumpter is redshirting this year. Therefore, can't equate him to the rankings, this year. That's a real shame, too. Nova would be sick with him. A fully healthy Nova vs. UConn would be outstanding this year.

I believe the last time Duke won the title was with Boozer and Jason Williams. :P

I think Sheldon Williams is somewhat overrated, actually. Granted, he does get double and triple teamed... but, he almost always get outplayed by other talented big men. Killingsworth owned him this year. May outplayed him every game. The big white MSU guy did in last year's tourney.

Paul Davis from MSU? Yeah he's a very solid, underrated big man. I had no doubts he'd hold his own vs. Sheldon. I have no idea why people thought MSU had little chance vs. Duke in the tourney last year (most had Syracuse over MSU in the 2nd round). Perhaps no one recalled MSU taking Duke to the buzzer at Cameron?

As far as Taquan Dean goes, right now he's having to carry U of L singlehanded. It's weird too because on paper we should have SOMEONE else surely. Juan Palacios can be a very good player, David Padgett is supposed to be a solid big man...but right now neither is 100% I don't think.

One thing that scares me about U of L is we actually have about 4 white dudes. Padgett, Gianiny, Current, and Millard. There's something really freaky about U of L having white guys, it's like a brave new world or something. Either that or we're the 1994 UK team, minus the gorgeous outside shooting of Travis Ford and Jeff Brassow.
