The World Junior Hockey Thread

Recommended Posts

Finland-Canada opens the tourney tonight in Vancouver, with three other games:

Norway- U.S in Group A, Sweden-Russia and Latvia-Czech Republic in Group B.

The talent-laden American and Russian sqauds are favoured in each group.

Discuss here.

Really, really looking forward to seeing Kessel for the U.S., but I'm not too sure if the games are on NHL Center Ice.

I see nothing wrong with Canada's unis. The side stripes aren't quite my thing, but they're decent. Aren't these the same ones the Olympic teams will be wearing?

Canada looking like world-beaters against Finland.

Man, three posts in and this thread has already gotten to the point that the sweaters are being discussed? Wow.

As an American that hasn't gotten to watch one minute of a game yet, let me say that I'd be thrilled if the US team matches the pre-tourney hype and wins it all. The state of US hockey is not that great right now (too many way too old guys, too many way too young guys, not enough prime-of-their-career guys) so if the States can mix in the current young guys with the current Juniors ... well, we could be well represented in the not-too-distant future.

Lastly: Why the Bruins didn't draft Bourque as a PR move became even more headscratching when he pocketed 5 goals. Such a poorly run organization.

An scary win for Canada with a third period mini-collapse.

By all accounts, Finland is making the favoured Yankees a bit worried.

I'm really looking forward to Saturday. Two hours of TNA, a Canada-US hockey game and a New Year's bender? THis could be gravy.

The most important thing about that US-Finland game is that Lauri Tukonen scored a goal for Finland. He is a Kings prospect who greatly enhanced my opinion of him tonight.

53 penalties in a hockey game is fucking absurd. If the IIHF continues this "zero tolerance" policy in Turin, the games are going to be fucking gross. The whole story of this tournament is officiating. Terrible.

Canada will make its fifth straight trip to the finals in a pretty entertaining game against the Fins.

Russia leads the favoured States 1-0 at the first intermission. However: Unsolved Mysteries > WJHC, so it'll be the Sports Ticker on commercials for the next hour.

Centre Ice.....

This one's gonna get ugly....it's been cheapshots and name-calling since about the 13 minute mark of the third. Chris Bourque just knocked the goalie down from inside the crease for fuck's sake.

Pierre McGuire with some interersting, and incredibly accurate insight:

"Russia needs to keep their starters on the bench, avoid suspensions for the gold medal game. The US is doing it because (U.S Coach) Walt Kyle is a class act and he's doing it."

Kyle, is however, wearing the gaudiest jacket I've ever seen.

I didn't know anything about the game besides the score and that the fans are going batshit. Canada's not going to win this tournament, but I'm not going to start chanting and shit.

I'd rather see Canada win, but I don't think it's gonna happen.

Yeah, agreed. My grievances with your president and administration shouldnt be taken out on Jack Johnson. And to be fair, The US Team has been booed all nite unfaiirly.

It would have been fair to cuss them out the last 4 or 5 minutes, but that's neither here nor there. You may have noticed the crowd humming and clapping along with Tom Connor's "Good Old Hockey Game".

Is Malkin just lining up and taking runs at players? Cause that's what I'm hearing.

Also, I'm a little happy that we lost in this tournament. Most of these guys will be on the team in Vancouver in 2010, and hopefully they've learned a lot. Can't just rely on Kessel to push them through the tournament and can't be too cocky, so hopefully this experience will teach them to become better players.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't a lot of the Canadian animosity towards the US start because "friendly fire" killed four Canadian soldiers right when the Iraq/Afghanistan situation started? I remember going to games in Montreal shortly after that and the boos drowned out the American anthem.

My presumption was that a lot of folks still hate America (because of Bush) because of that incident.

Without allowing this to go too off topic, yes and no. Animosity did seem to rise from the Iraq thing, but we also saw a lot of pro-U.S sentiment as well. I've always felt, as far as the friendly fire goes, that these guys still have to live with what they've done. There was one report abouta year ago that a commanding office told the Yank not to fire and he still did, but if I only remember this report being mentioned once, and I don't even really remember when, it probably wasn't true.

Now, let's avoid a C-Bacon/MikeSC loophole and get back to hockey:

Picks for tomorrow? Russians were the Group B Favourites and Canada was considered an underdog coming in. However, they also beat Russia 8-1 in a pre-tourney exhibition.

My guess: No way the Canadians lose on the home ice. Canada wins by 2 or 3, and there's at least one ugly/memorable incident to close out the tourney.

Home ice or no, Canada gets stomped, say 5-2.

If that's the case, they should still be damn proud of their silver medal, as they weren't given much of a chance of even medalling by the media across the country.
