snuffbox 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2006 Id like to mention the song Panic as Im not seing it in this thread anywhere and its one of my fave Smiths songs.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2006 Panic isn't very good. It's the EXACT same G major-E minor from "Metal Guru" by T. Rex; Marr freely admits this. With the "hang the DJ!" part, it's as repetitive as "Barbarism. . ." at just 1/3 the length. "Ask" is better. It's so sweet it corrodes your teeth.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2006 This thread makes me realize it has been a very long time since I've listened to a Smiths album. I should do something about that. Also, that's neat that we can attach mp3s. More people should take advantage of that.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2006 Yeah, I know its among the weaker Smiths songs musically. But I just like it.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2006 In terms of strongest songs from a musical standpoint, I think I have to give it to "This Night Has Opened My Eyes." The way everyone is playing off each other is just outstanding. Really a lesser-known track; another casualty of a single-oriented discography. (This was a bonus track on a singles/b-sides/rarities compilation.) Who in his right mind would put "Vicar in a Tutu" on an album over "Rubber Ring"
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2006 Were I on my home computer, I'd attach both "Panic" and "Metal Guru" and everyone can listen and compare. Czech, do you have mp3s of both handy? I wouldn't be able to do this myself until this evening.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2006 Yes I do, and I can slap them together in one big composite file so you can compare and contrast, actually, but I have class from 2.15 to 3.30 and I won't get it saved and uploaded in like five minutes. I've also done this with Maroon 5's "She Will Be Loved" and Cheap Trick's "The Flame," as well as the obvious "Are You Gonna Be My Girl"/"Lust For Life" one. Hey. "Don't Speak" and "Breakfast In America"
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2006 The Clash's "Spanish Bombs" and Elvis Costello and the Attractions' "Oliver's Army." The latter predates the former by only a few months, but they have the same exact melody. The Clash track simply plays it on guitar as opposed to the keyboard-driven Costello tune. The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2006 YTMND of all places has a damning indictment of Coldplay by slowing down/speeding up Clocks and Speed Of Sound and then overdubbing one on the other. There's the whole Talk/Computer Love deal, but we all know the story behind that
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2006 This should get the point across. I could've done a fancy mashup, but I just hastily spliced Metal Guru and Panic. smiths___t._rex___metal_panic.mp3
Slayer 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2006 I've listened to a good number of the songs on both Czech's and Decemberist's lists and while I like bits from both, I'd have to lean towards the Smiths
PLAGIARISM! 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2006 The more I see Morrissey's band live (Boorer, Whyte et al) the more I appreciate them. I think Whyte's guitar style compliments Morrissey's voice just as well as Marr's, even though he's not technically as good. Johnny Marr as a composer without Morrissey's delivery (the crucial factor here) is only a shade above Bernard Butler.
Guest Temet Report post Posted February 5, 2006 Try "Sexy Sadie" and Jet's "Look What You've Done".
PLAGIARISM! 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2006 Or indeed Jet's 'are you gonna be my girl' with 'lust for life' & 'a town called malice'. Staggering.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2006 Jet's 'Cold Hard Bitch' = AC/DC's 'Shoot to Thrill'
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2006 Or not bother because Jet is worthless anyway you slice it.
