Winter Olympic Men's Hockey Thread

Lundqvist's goaltending in the 3rd period was as good as anyone I've seen not named Hasek. He was just a brick wall in the net for the last 20 minutes of that game.

Nice to see the Red Wings power Sweden to victory. Hopefully that was an omen for the playoffs this year.

No, it wasn't AS YOU MENTIONED. It was a token deal to show fake interest that they wanted to bring him back. They never planned on signing Nolan, re-signing Nolan, or anything of that ilk.

No, it was AS I MENTIONED as they offered him an opportunity to coach through the 97-98 season.

I'm not really sure how you dispute that fact.

Was Nolan pushing for a longer/bigger contract at the time? He sure was and Regier was probably fairly confident that Nolan would not return under his offer. But on the same token, if Nolan decided to take the offer, Buffalo wasn't going to turn around and yank it.

If I was a GM coming into a position where the word around the league was that the current coach had pulled a powerplay to get the previous GM canned, I would probably be fairly conscious about handing out a long term contract to this guy until I was confident I could work with him. Particularly considering the fact that the coach displayed nothing in his track record to indicate that he deserved a big long term deal.

If he had decided to stay on for 97-98 whose to say what would have happened. Would he have been gone then anyways? There is that possibility, amongst many others.

The fact is that Nolan had the opporunity to continue coaching at the time and refused the offer out there, thinking that we was deservant of more.

This doesn't even broach on the Crisp job in Tampa Bay.

Thats the greatest accomplishment he's ever going to receive, because hes not going to win a cup.

Mind you I think the presence of Forseberg made the huge difference of a medal contender to a Gold Medal contender.

Not to mention having an actual ABOVE AVERAGE Swedish goalie. Note how close the Finns came to tying the game at the end. Tommy Salo had a good season or two, but off-hand I can not think of one other decent Swedish goalie (besides Lundqvist) to come along since Pelle Lindbergh.

And coming back to Toronto will be like a bad hangover for Sundin, yes. It's nice to see him win something, anyway, he deserves it.

C'mon Tommy Soderstrom??? He was good for a shitty Islanders team.

He was good for about 90 minutes.

Hockey time, not real time, I'll be fair.

What ever happened to him? He kinda signed up for the Jim Carey "Lots of talent but I'll disappear soon" plan.
