OAO No Way Out Thread, Feb/19th/2006

Recommended Posts

The problem is, the "criteria" I use, is just me putting into words what I like in wrestling. It's not some arbitrary thing I just came up with. In my blog entry on the subject, the criteria I listed are pretty basic and general, and open to quite a bit of interpretation based on what style the match is (only exception would be selling, to a degree). Execution in a brawl is going to be different than execution in a technical match. I know enough to not expect king's road in the WWE. But that doesn't mean I can't compare the matches. All pro-wrestling shares certain elements. Past that, I just make the comparison based on which match did better in its style than the other.

Ultimately what it boils down to is someone not caring about certain things in a wrestling match, while the other person does. If both sides present a decent argument, all that's left to be said is "to each their own, it is what it is". There's really no point in arguing past that, unless someone can come up with a contradiction/double standard to attack the person's position. Even so, you can't prove that one view is right and the other is wrong. Someone could come up with a realistic argument for why Giant Singh is a great wrestler, and what could you say to that? The argument would obviously have nothing to do with story-telling, execution, selling, crowd-manipulation, basic coordination, acting ability, etc etc, but those things obviously wouldn't matter to this person. That is of course an extreme example, but the premise is similar to what really goes on. Nothing can be proven in a subjective discussion, because the standards can be changed from person to person. That's why I always say it's the strength of the argument that determines who looks good and who doesn't. Of course, many people don't even bother presenting a good argument, but that's another subject for another time :P

Was this Undertaker's first clean loss with no gimmicks?

And no, SummerSlam 98 doesn't count.

Austin beat Taker cleanly on Raw (night after KOTR '99) to win the WWF title.

HHH beat Taker cleanly at Insurrextion 2002.

Rey vs. Orton vs. Angle - a better match, at least. I couldn't care less about any of it.

Taker/Benoit would go something like Taker says no one can tap him out, Benoit comes out and says for years there was an unspoken understanding between the two that they wouldn't cross each others paths because of the mutual respect they have for each other, but Taker making that claim Benoit sees as a bit of disrespect, because Benoit makes his name on tapping guys out. Unfortunately there is no epic deal between the two, the only thing they have in common is that they are old and grizzled. The sell would just be in two old fuckers beating the shit out of each other.

Sometimes, simple direct booking is the best avenue to go with.

I've been pushing for Benoit-Taker, especially at Mania for awhile now but I don't think it'll happen. WWE is probably too scared to have a good match like that at Mania.

Benoit/JBL and UT/Henry, instead. Not as bad as it could be but I'd still take Benoit/Taker.

You got six weeks to work with, Benoit can drop the title in 2 weeks via something screwy and put the title on JBL there, and they can do JBL/Finlay for the US Title. Who knows, cares.

It's not to late for Benoit/Taker.

If they do Benoit vs. Taker, I want Paul Heyman back as evil, vile wrestling assassin Chris Benoit's manager.

Wow, a mark who is offended that I don't think Angle and UT are good workers. You don't get around much do you?

Actually buddy I'm niether a smart and a mark.

Unlike most of the people on the board, wrestling isn't my life, and I just watch it to be entertained.
