Zelda Using Revolution Controller

Miyamoto apparently confirms popular rumors in interview.

Nintendo has been teasing the possibility of Revolution controller functionality incorporated into The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess in lieu of the GameCube game's nearly year-long delay. Every time Nintendo's been asked, they have dodged with "that's a good idea" or "I'll have to tell Mr. Miyamoto."

Apparently, someone did. Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed suspicions in a VIP lounge interview on Nintendo Europe's website (thanks to GAF for picking up on it) following his knighting into the Order of Arts and Letters in France.

 

When asked about Twilight Princess' progress, Miyamoto said everything coming along well, and that "because Revolution can run GameCube software, when you play Twilight Princess on Revolution you can take advantage of the Revolution controller."

 

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Stop the train. We already knew Twilight Princess would be playable on GameCube, but it's mighty odd for Miyamoto to simply announce such a feature on a whim - but apparently he has. Not only that, but Miyamoto made sure to underscore that "almost everything" about Revolution will be revealed at E3 in May.

 

Everyone on the west coast is just getting into work, so we haven't been able to confirm the details with Nintendo, but Miyamoto's statement seems pretty clear. Stay tuned as we try to learn more.

 

Now, "take advantage" doesn't necessarily mean "OMG YOU CAN USE IT TO SWING YOUR SWORD" because I'm not sure how well that'll mesh with the rest of the game design, but it does run contrary to what Nintendo claimed in the past.

If you liked LTTP, I highly suggest giving Four Swords Adventures a try. It's a fun title even in 1P mode (I thought I'd blast through it quickly--not so), and these days it isn't *that* difficult to get together folks with GBAs for multiplayer. Hardly anyone owns the GC to GBA link, but you can get one for under 10 bucks. Since just about everyone has sprung for an extra controller for the sake of a friend/friends who don't own the same console, that's not bad at all really.

People wonder why I'm so fucked up and evil, and it's probably because I was born into a tribe of all women. My mom was actually a pair of little old witches who could turn into a giant, young looking witch. How'd that shit work out while she was pregnant with me, anyway? So there is a Zelda coming out for the GC though right? They aren't going to delay it and put it on the Revolution are they?

 

No it will be a Gamecube game but it will be able to use the Revolution controller speical features

It's a moot point AFAIC because I'm going to pick up a Rev at launch anyway.

 

But yeah, TP is GC, a Rev-exclusive Zelda is all but guaranteed, but you can use some Rev functions with TP.

Everyone and their mother knew that when they announced that Twilight Princess was being delayed, there was a very strong chance it was going to be because of a tie-in or transfer to the new Revolution console.

 

Now, the game has been delayed for almost a year. The "April release" is closing in fast, and still no news of it coming out. I asked at an EBGames a few days ago, and got an estimated release date of "...September."

 

Nintendo really dropped the ball when they delayed Zelda, allowing the X-Box 360 to be released un-opposed. If Zelda isn't out by Black Friday of this year, then I'm afraid we'll have to relegate Nintendo to the level of a non-entity.

Well, there was Wind Waker, which was awesome except for all the FUCKING SAILING.

 

A bit of an oversimplification. WW had a daring, beautiful art style, a polished up gameplay engine, great music (mix of classic and original), but it is well-known to have been rushed.

 

Supposedly there was criticism about the supposedly high difficulty of OOT's dungeons (crazy since LttP's get much more difficult overall), and so WW's are more straightforward. However, TP's is supposed to be harder based on feedback from game mags.

Too bad about the Wind Waker that never was. I don't recall an official statement about whether a better idea was in mind for recovering the Courage Triforce, but imagine if that element was excised, we had about 2 more main dungeons, and we had a battle with Big G more like OOT's.

 

Ganondorf looked good in WW...but went down like nothing.

 

Ballad of Gales mostly clears up the sailing complaints, but as 1up's feature on the series noting, too many sidequest-style fetching was essential for completion of the game.

The Triforce Map Fetching, then getting all those rupees just so that fag Tingle could rob you blind, and then having to ride around the entire ocean to find the pieces was about 2-3 hours longer than it ever needed to be.

 

I know Miyamoto wants to avoid a rushed ending like he had in WW, but for fuck's sake; why are we still waiting for this game almost a year after it's original release date? All this delaying is going to seriously affect TP, like is started to kill off the anticipation for Halo 2 by hyping it beyond realistic expectations.

I don't think it really matters when TP comes out. It's not going to make Cubes fly off the shelves or hurt Xbox 360 sales.

 

 

If Link is a different hero each time why can't he be a girl in one of the next games? Nintendo must be sexist.

This is true. The BOXers are mostly a different demo for one. There was a point in time when TP would have meant lots of GC sales (WW sold plenty of Cubes), but not at that point. Nintendo is obviously banking more on it selling Revs.

This is ridiculous, though.

 

(However, there's some fanarts which do make him one, ranging from "cute" to utterly horrifying.)

 

On a related note, just about anyone who likes the Zelda game has heard of/seen/screamed at Wand of Gamelon/Faces of Evil and their horrible animated sequences, but there's another CD-i that rarely gets seen...

Surprisingly, a more traditional Zelda game, but one where you play as Zelda. It still sucks, but it's a more interesting product at least.

Not really. It'd be something new and interesting and would fit in the Zelda world. If Nintendo can make games like Peach they can do that.

Link wouldn't be Link if he were female. Different timelines/realities sure, but Peach in SPP isn't a female Mario, she's a female character in a game with Mario-style play mechanics.

 

(Doesn't get what the crack about SPP's sales means.)

 

Now, if you're thinking Nintendo should do a spinoff with a female lead, or even with Zelda as a fully playable (only good, not like the above), that's an entirely different matter.

 

Nintendo's done a LoZ game that was a parallel universe and another that was a dream sequence. Malon got an extra sister and occupations changed, but had stayed fairly consistent with genders/personalities.

By bringing up Peach I was just meaning Nintendo is ok with a female lead. And about that game's overly feminine presentation....I can't decide if it's good or bad. It seems fun and silly...but it's also kind of strange to think a short, easy, sterotypically girly game is what Nintendo thinks of girl gamers.

 

Why wouldn't a female Link be Link? Nothing about him is overly masculine. All his key traits, his appearance and personality would easily fit for a girl.

I'll probably eventually buy a GC in order to play this game and the Metroids, unless you need the Revolution to get the full experience, or some bullshit like that.

 

And I'll agree that Four Swords is a great game. You should really have 3 or 4 people to experience the goodness, though.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I didn't mind the sections where you had to kill every freakin' thing that would be thrown at you, though. However, Wizzrobes are even worse in 3D. L-targeting seems clunkier when it comes to switching targets than Z targeting. And it doesn't auto-target a new enemy when the current one dies...and sometimes you gotta hold L a couple of times before it does target. Only an issue in intense battles though. TP is basically using a more polished version of that engine, so it should be addressed.

Peach ain't Samus, though. Plus, the Yoshi platformers after Yoshi's Island suffered from the same problems, except that they sucked.

That's because he's typically more childlike, but TP, Zelda II, and OOT all had older, more serious Links. He's a 1P Nintendo character, though. He's not Guts.

 

He's always been male, though. If they want a female hero, fine, but it wouldn't/shouldn't be Link with boobs.

If you look at WW Link from just the right angle he kind of looks like the animated Huey in the Boondocks...

 

Somebody should photoshop him with dark skin and a fro.

 

And I'll agree that Four Swords is a great game. You should really have 3 or 4 people to experience the goodness, though.

 

Since each player-controlled character can hold a different weapon, it adds more incentive, yeah. Each person can have a speciality.

 

Plus if somebody ticks you off, you can toss him into a pit, chuck a bomb into him, etc.

 

But even if you don't have a full party of players, you can steal partners.

In his keynote this morning Nintendo Co., Ltd President Satoru Iwata revealed something sure to thrill DS owners. A new Zelda game is coming to the handheld, and, better yet, it will be here by the end of the year. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass made its debut in a video that showed off the beautiful new game. Graphically, the game is fully 3D using the cartoon style from Wind Waker.

While little is known of the gameplay yet, it was clear that the action moves across both of the DS's screens. There will be puzzles that can be solved by using the touch screen. Examples we saw were throwing a boomerang along a path you draw with the stylus, directing your Wind Waker-style ship using the stylus, and opening up sealed areas by pressing on the correct pressure plates (like how you would stand on them in other Zelda games). You can also put out a fire and make notes on the map using the stylus -- and then put the map back onto the top screen. And it wouldn't be Zelda without a fairy that looks just like Tingle. Yep, it's in there. "

Fanfreakingtastic. It seems to be a Wind Waker sequel...with the ability to chart your own course with the stylus. The perspective looks excellent, too.

The PS3 thread was really getting off topic, so instead of posting the full article here, bumping this one.

EGM Twilight Princess Article

 

This month EGM has a great Zelda: TP cover story, as well as speaking about the Wii in general. The article is mostly an interview with producer Eiji Aonuma and the legend himself Miyamoto.

 

Interview

 

Right off the bat they jump into why this game was delayed for a year (I'm still crying over it). Aonuma states the game was not progressing as they hoped and mainly because President Iwata stated that "Zelda isn't the type of game that can be a 100 on a scale of 1 to 100 - it has to be a 120." Aonuma then states that with the extra year they have looked at and reworked everything. The delay was also in part because of the addition of Wii functions.

 

Then they spoke about Wiimote controls. Miyamoto states that the idea was to look at the Zelda controls and simplify the confusing parts. He speaks about how going into first person to shoot a bow can be confusing for some, so with the Wiimote, they just point and shoot. They thought about having sword control but Aonuma stated that having people wave their arms so much would get them tired. Also the Wiimote will allow you to lock on to any enemy on the screen by pointing at them.

 

Next they spoke about what changes there are to the Wii version of Twilight Princess. Aonuma states that widescreen is the big difference: the GameCube version will not have it, while the Wii version has true 16:9 widescreen (YES!!) and he says once you see it like that you will never want to go back. Also in the Wii version you have Navi act like your cursor. Miyamoto stated the game will be the same just some added features and graphic upgrades.

 

Online mode for Twilight Princess was questioned, and Aonuma stated that there is no multiplayer mode in the game but he is interested in how they could use the whole constant online connection the Wii has. So maybe some type of downloadable content will be available.

 

Finally EGM asked about the criticism of Wind Waker. Aonuma said that they did make Wind Waker way too easy and that they wanted to model Twilight Princess after Ocarina of Time. They already have more dungeons and items than Ocarina of Time.

Of course the article has images and amazing ones at that. The first one is a huge two page spread of Link riding the horse out to Hyrule field, the detail is amazing.

 

There is a picture showing the lava effects, EGM says its better than RE4's lava. There is a picture of Midna floating in front of Link (in the normal world) in front of a beautiful waterfall and lake, it's just gorgeous.

 

Then they write about the whole Twilight Realm makeover. They state that Nintendo has thrown out the black and white version and has gone with a version that includes over saturated colors, hazy light effects, and soft focus, the result is the beautiful dream like landscape. There are three pictures showing the new Twilight Realm, I think its an excellent change; it looks great.

 

Next we have Link with Iron boots attached upside down to a huge magnet while shooting the bow. You can't imagine how cool this looks.

 

Then there is this very odd picture of Link as a wolf with Midna but Link is pretty much glowing green and there are floating green balls of light. No clue what is going on. The caption states that Link may have more passengers on his back than just Midna.

 

Then there is a picture of Link teleporting in wolf form, EGM assumes its how Link goes from the normal world to the Twilight Realm.

 

Rogue's Gallery

 

EGM has a section called Rogues Gallery which shows a few new characters you will meet, all are concept art. First is a noble Knight, armor and all he has a spear and a shield with legs. Now the shield doesn't walk around, its just legs so the shield could stand on its own, so he could hide behind it.

 

Next is the new Gorons. This guy is no longer nice, he is huge, mean and has some crazy armor. EGM says expect similar makeovers for Zora's and deku scrubs.

 

Last is by far the craziest thing I have seen about TP. I don't know how to describe it, basically you will wish Tingle was back. It's two guys dressed in drag, with their full mid-drifts showing, wearing clown like makeup. Its scary, you need to see this.

 

So there you have it, all you need to know about the EGM issue of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
