Senate OKs Border Fence, Mulls Citizenship

WASHINGTON

 

The Senate voted to build 370 miles of triple-layered fencing along the Mexican border Wednesday and clashed over citizenship for millions of men and women who live in the United States illegally.

 

Amid increasingly emotional debate over election-year immigration legislation, senators voted 83-16 to add fencing and 500 miles of vehicle barriers along the southern border. It marked the first significant victory in two days for conservatives seeking to place their stamp on the contentious measure.

Dumbest. If border patrols start shooting at people crossing the border, immigrants aren't going to turn tail and run, they're going to shoot back. I prefer not to have soldiers killed along the border, let alone the humanitarian disaster that would create.

A few years back, there was a big to-do over a National Guard member who shot and killed a 16-year old kid who was guarding his family's flock of sheep out in rural West Texas. The kid was protecting the flock, the Guard person saw him with a gun, and from there the stories get muddled.

 

End result: Kid dead, Guardsmen tried, National Guard pulled out of Border Patrol duty.
