Slayer 0 Report post Posted April 6, 2006 Places had 4 years mandatory? Shit, when I was in HS (a decade ago), it was only one year mandatory as a freshman. I personally took it voluntarily for the rest of my HS though. What does it have to do with anything? I don't know, I just felt like sharing
theintensifier 0 Report post Posted April 6, 2006 If all they had at schools was healthy food, how many students would actually eat it ? Besides the ones that couldn't afford to bring their own lunch, I don't see many choosing a salad over a basket of french fries with ketchup. THe one big problem that everyone seems to be missing is that Teenagers enjoy the garbage food, the greasy Pizza, The Baked Potatoes, THe Fried Chicken, etc., you take that food off then menu and replace it with Salads, Tofu, Vegetables, etc., and you know what will happen? A lot less kids are going to be eating lunch at school. That healthy crap is much more expensive then the junk the schools can purchase in bulk, so not only will the prices go up, but much of it will end up being wasted, becuase no one is going to eat the healthy stuff. Yeah sure, every High School has the handfull of ultra lib teens that refuse to eat the junkfood for whatever misguided reasons they might have, but that's far from the norm. The government shouldn't have to babysit and make sure you eat healthy. As for Gym class, it was rapidly on the way out when I graduated in 2003. By the time I graduated, it went from 4 years manadatory, to 2 years, and now I hear that it's only one year now. Schools are so afraid of Lawsuits now that stuff like Gym often ends up being the first thing cut because it basically lends itself to children getting hurt. Whatever happend to "boys will be boys" and then a handshake, and then your father beats the shit out of you for embarassing him ?
Guest The Satanic Angel Report post Posted April 7, 2006 Whatever happend to "boys will be boys" and then a handshake, and then your father beats the shit out of you for embarassing him ? The line between punishment and abuse has gotten blurry. Punishment has gotten weaker for fear of raising a society of violent kids. Instead we have a generation of uber-sensative kids. Hawk 34 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2006 It's also because they don't want kids to be ashamed or embarassed of being picked last and stuff for dodgeball or soccer. They care so much about their emotional well-being, they neglect the physical side. I remember some hippy (jesus, Im turning into KKK) sub for gym class once, and he was told to let us do our normal stretches and runs, then just play a full game of soccer. Traditionally, we split into 2 groups via selection but this hippy stops us and tells us to stand in straight line from tallest to shortest (way to single out the short kids, teach) and count off 1 and 2 to set up the team. The whole class essentially said "fuck that" and set up our own teams in about 20 seconds with simple eye communication and once he figured it out, he blew a gasket and starting screaming and all this stuff. What does that have to do with anything? nothing, i just remembered that and figured, it applied to this stuff.
EricMM 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2006 1) Healthy food does not cost anymore than bad food, 2) why do kids (where do kids learn to) love shitty food over good food? It's poison

EricMM 0 Report post Posted April 8, 2006 I guess the proper question is where do they not learn to at least semi-hate shitty food then. I mean I love Chipotle Burritos and pizza and soda. But I fully understand it's no everyday thing. And for every burrito I have, I have to have something green, something healthy. AND it means I have to go to the gym, of course. I swear, it's not an imput problem, really. Young bodies won't die, no matter how much we eat. But lazy bodies WILL fatten up and go diabetic. Ergo, I think the lack of PE is technically worse than the school lunches.

Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2006 I do actually have some fond memories food-wise at school. The elementary school I went to had good hot dogs. I liked their soup until this one time I found a dead bee in it.

Big Ol' Smitty 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2006 Soda Distributors to End Most School Sales NEW YORK - The nation's largest beverage distributors have agreed to halt nearly all sales of sodas to public schools — a step that will remove the sugary, caloric drinks from vending machines and cafeterias around the country. "This is a bold step forward in the struggle to help 35 million young people lead healthier lives," former President Clinton said at a news conference. "This one policy can add years and years and years to the lives of a very large number of young people." Under the agreement, the companies also have agreed to sell only water, unsweetened juice and low-fat milks to elementary and middle schools. Diet sodas would be sold only to high schools... The agreement should reach an estimated 87 percent of the public and private school drink market, Neely said. Industry giants Cadbury Schweppes PLC, Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. and the ABA have signed on. Officials said they hope companies representing the other 13 percent of the market would follow suit. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a collaboration between Clinton's foundation and the American Heart Association, helped broker the deal... Under the agreement, high schools will still be able to sell low-calorie drinks that contain less than 10 calories per serving, as well as drinks that are considered nutritious, such as juice, sports drinks and low-fat milk. The "nutritious" drinks will be limited to 12-ounce servings, Neely said. Elementary schools will sell 8-ounce servings of the "nutritious" drinks, and middle school kids will get 10-ounce-size drinks... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060503/ap_on_...DltBHNlYwM3MTY-

Big Ol' Smitty 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2008 Meat from sick and lame cows going to school children. (video) Video footage being released today shows workers at a California slaughterhouse delivering repeated electric shocks to cows too sick or weak to stand on their own; drivers using forklifts to roll the "downer" cows on the ground in efforts to get them to stand up for inspection; and even a veterinary version of waterboarding in which high-intensity water sprays are shot up animals' noses -- all violations of state and federal laws designed to prevent animal cruelty and to keep unhealthy animals, such as those with mad cow disease, out of the food supply. Washington Post story here.
MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted February 3, 2008 Dont act like some of the meat from those cows isn't getting into the adult food supply either now. Its not all about the kids here, though more will get done because of them.
