Welcome to the 2006 TSM NFL Mock Draft. The official time when the clock starts will be tomorrow (the 3rd) at 9:00 pm EST, but we can start as soon as C_V makes the Houston pick.

 

Each pick will be given 12 hours. If your 12 hours expire, a pick will be made for you. If you show up before the next pick is made, the pick can be changed. If you do not show up before the next pick, you are S.O.L.

 

Strong suggestion: If you see you are within the next 5 or so picks and know you will be away from the computer for a stretch, please pm someone a list of selections and make sure to list enough players to cover every spot until yours (ex. if you are up in 5 picks, make sure to make your list 5 players long.) This will help us avoid another 3 weeks per round scenario and allow us to complete a second and third round for those who wish to stick around a while.

 

If I am on when a pick is made, I'll send out a pm to whoever is next to remind, but still try to check in on this thread regularly just in case.

Gary Kubiak, eschewing the traditional War Room, practically runs the card up to the stage. Tags takes the card and heads back to the podium.

No one is surprised, but a cheer still arises out of the gallery. Kubiak adresses the media to discuss the pick and says, "This was really a no brainer. After USC's pro day (4.33 forty, 24 on the bench, 40 inch vertical) we knew the Reggie had the right mix of speed, stength, and athleticism needed to be a special player in the league. With an offense featuring Reggie, Domanick Davis, Andre Johnson, Eric Moulds, and Jeb Putzier, we feel that David Carr has been given the weapons necessary to succeed in the NFL."

With the 2nd pick of the 1st round, the New Orleans Saints choose...

 

D'Brickashaw Ferguison, OT, University of Virginia

 

 

Thanks to C LeCharles Bentley leaving as a free agent, LT Wayne Gandy getting older, and RT Jammal Brown's natural tendencies fitting his current spot rather than Left Tackle, Ferguison is definitely a great pick to fill a serious need for the Saints.

 

 

They need to have a good pass defender up on the QB's blindside now that they've dumped Aaron "King of the 30-Yard Sack" Brooks and poured a lot of money into a proven winner, Drew Brees.

 

Ferguson is projected to be the kind of tackle who is excellent at pass-blocking on the NFL level, which is just what the Saints are going to need to protect their very expensive new QB.

 

With an O-Line bookended by Ferguison and Brown, Brees should be able to get enough time to throw to star WRs Joe Horn and Donte Stallworth.

With the third pick in the 2006 NFL draft, the Tennessee Titans select:

 

Matt Leinart, USC, QB

 

McNair's coming to the end of the road, Volek isn't exactly a spring chicken, so the consensus is QB seems to be the way to go. After that it comes down to Leinart (Chow's boy) vs. Young (McNair's boy).

 

I am not completely convinced on Leinart as being a franchise QB, but it is hard to argue with what he accomplished at USC and the unease about Leinart is nothing compared to my uneasiness about Young.

With the 4th pick of the NFL Draft, the New York Jets select:

 

 

Mario Williams, DE, NC State

 

Trading Abraham netted the Jets a draft pick, and saved some money. But it also created a big hole on the defensive side of the ball. Abe created holes for his fellow teammates, so a replacement was needed. In comes Mario Williams. Standing at 6'7, 290 pounds, Williams should create many mismatches, and cause double teams, opening up holes for his teammates. With the Jets switching to the 3-4, they'll need a dominant end. And with Leinart and Ferguson taken, the next best step would be to take the best available player, and that is Mario Williams.

With the 5th pick of the NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select:

A.J. Hawk, LB, THE Ohio State University

 

The Packers have been in desperate need of upgrading their front seven for a llong time now. With Na'il Diggs gone from the team, and Nick Barnett needing someone to move him to the outside, the Packers finally get to upgrade the area of the team needing improvement so badly, and an instant, proven, injury-free playmaker at MLB. Hawk can play all three linebacker positions as well, which will infinitely help Barnett make plays as well. While statistically speaking, the Packers looked like they needed help on offense, this was due to that side of the ball being absolutely decimated by injuries as well as incredibly awful and inconsistently play at guard and wide receiver. With a healthy offense intact, and a defense that's looking better and better by the week, the Pack could return to playoff form this upcoming season, especially with a playmaker like Hawk (and what a cool fucking name that is, also). I see huge things with Hawk, I'm hoping he'll be the second coming of Nitschke for the Pack.

 

Some folks say Mario Williams would be taken ahead of A.J. Hawk, but with Aaron Kampman coming into his own, and KGB taking up the other DE spot, I think even if Williams were available, Green Bay would still take Hawk.

With the 6th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select...

 

Michael Huff, Defensive Back, from the University of Texas

 

Strengths:

Very athletic with excellent speed...A playmaker and ballhawk in the secondary who has a nose for the ball...Really has a knack for taking interceptions to the house...Versatile and has experience at both safety and cornerback...Moves well and shows terrific range...Very reliable tackler...Smart player with tremendous instincts...Comes from a program with a strong history of developing pro DB's.

 

Weaknesses:

May be a bit of a 'tweener who doesn't fit in at either safety or corner at the pro level...Will gamble at times in an effort to come away with a turnover...Needs to work on and refine his technique...Needs to get stronger...Was shuffled around throughout his career and was never able to concentrate on just one position.

 

Notes:

Thorpe Award winner...Brother (Marcus King) is a safety at Missouri...When it comes to making a big play in the secondary you won't find many who have done it as well as this guy at the college level the past few years...His pro position is still up in the air but with his physical tools it certainly give teams a lot of options.

Vince Young, Quarterback, from the University of Texas

 

Strengths:

Has the type of rare athletic ability that is hardly ever seen...Size is ideal with great height and a solid frame...Great speed and quickness...Outstanding runner and scrambler with tremendous vision...Arm strength is good, but not great...Has a quick release...Still has a lot of upside and got better each year while making a huge leap as a junior...Amazing leader and field general with top intangibles...A gamer who comes up big in the clutch...Can take over and dominate a game.

 

Weaknesses:

Has an extremely awkward delivery...Mechanics might have to be reworked...Very raw as a passer and is still a better athlete than quarterback right now...Doesn't read defenses all that well...Will make some poor decisions...Needs to adjust to taking snaps from under center and playing in a pro style offense...Probably has to sit and learn for a year or two before he is ready to start at the next level.

I really hope this actually happens, I would love to see Young bust out a 30 yard run, with the next play an endzone fade to Moss. The Raiders have other needs, but who cares when you can land a guy like Young.

Vernon Davis, TE, Maryland

 

 

With Eric Moulds gone, the Buffalo Bills desprately needs another offensive weapon, for young quarterback JP Losman. Vernon Davis is byfar the best TE prospect in the postion history (No disrespect to Kellen Winslow II). Vernon has blazing speed(Ran a 4.50), amazing strenght, and excellent catching ability. He set all kinds of Maryland records, and amazed people at the scouting combine. Has been compared to many great TE's(Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzales, and Shannon Sharpe), and should provide a great offensive weapon for the Bills, and to take the stress off the Bills projected No. 1 WR, Lee Evans.

 

If Vernon Davis makes it to the Bills in the real draft, they would have to take this guy.

With the 9th pick, the Detroit Lions select...

 

Jimmy Williams, CB, Virginia Tech

 

 

Detroit had along of problems with the DB and you know that new Detroit Lions coach, defensive minded Rod Marinelli will want to improve that and give his new defensive coordinator Donne Henderson all the help he can get. Jimmy Williams is the nations top rated cornerback but can also played Safety, if needed. He lead the ACC with 5 INT's, and has very little mistakes in his game, if any. It's hard to see Jimmy Williams miss a tackle, and has great jaming ability. With Jimmy Williams, the Detroit upgrades their Lions, and could possibly make noise in the weak NFC North divison.

 

This will most likely be the Lions draft choice, in the real draft.

I believe that the Cards need a DT like Ngata to be next to Dockett or an OT like Justice, but they need someone in place for when Warner is gone. Simple, no brainer pick.

The Eagles desperately lacked a pass rush last year and were torched for it. Other than Mike Patterson's flashes, they got almost no pressure up the middle at all. Considered going Chad Greenway here as they also need a SAM, but a combination of them never taking a 1st round LB and the fact a pass rush will make the entire defense that much better brings it to Bunkley.
