Guest InuYasha Posted April 14, 2006 Report Posted April 14, 2006 As the title says, I finished my first IT repair job today. It was fairly easy, as IT jobs go. A car salesman at work asked me to work on his PC. His son, who is 13, was using it to do what all 13-year old boys do online. So, in his escapades in adolescence, he managed to get the PC seriously infected with viruses, trojans, and more adware and spyware than I could count. So, I tried to service it. The viruses and such had so thoroughly damaged his PC that it could no longer boot up. I had to boot it up in Safe Mode to even work on it. I went online, and got Avast! and Spybot, and used them to try to get rid of all the problems. Unfortunately, it was too late. The MBR on the hard drive was too far gone. So, I gave him two options: format his current hard drive and lose all his info, or buy a second hard drive, and slave the old one off him. He chose the second hard drive. So, I installed the second hard drive, formatted it, and installed XP Pro on it. Now, his PC is running the OS off the first, new hard drive, while avoiding destroying the old drive's info. So, I got it running just fine, and then we got down to the unpleasant part. I quoted him $10/hr, for 6 hours. Now, any serious PC repair personnel, or someone who's used them, can tell you that's dirt cheap. But, he was a little put off by that. So, I went down to $40, and we agreed. I'm going to be interested in what he has to say about his son tomorrow morning.
Guest Sylvan Grenier Posted April 14, 2006 Report Posted April 14, 2006 So you're out of the cart-pushing business.
Guest Princess Leena Posted April 14, 2006 Report Posted April 14, 2006 Sylvan, I'm tired of your fucking power trip.
Guest Sylvan Grenier Posted April 14, 2006 Report Posted April 14, 2006 This is like my Chicken Boo account. I should really try harder to evade my stalker.

Oh fuck that bitch. $60 is too much? Well then he can go out and get another computer. Is $10/hour your normal rate? And congrats on popping your IT cherry.
Guest NYankees Posted April 14, 2006 Report Posted April 14, 2006 You should have told him your rate before you started working. Sorry but he cut your pay 33 percent. Fuck that and fuck him. Let that bitch deal with a broken computer with a ton of porn and viruses on his computer.

EricMM Posted April 14, 2006 Report Posted April 14, 2006 You wouldn't be much of a man if you couldn't.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted April 14, 2006 Report Posted April 14, 2006 You should have told him your rate before you started working. I love people that want a service like IT work done, then flip out at the cost. This isn't the 1930s where everything was a dime, even the weekly paycheck. Also, if this really was the '30s we wouldn't be posting on an Internet Message Board.

Upon reading this, I was still able to recite the theme song despite not hearing it for at least six years. It just made me realise how great he really was, and that a few weeks ago I got a whole group of people (even some who didn't watch the show) to sing the theme tune with me.

Guest InuYasha Posted April 15, 2006 Report Posted April 15, 2006 So you're out of the cart-pushing business. WTF are you talking about?

And congrats on popping your IT cherry. Actually, my normal rate is $20 for what I was doing. I charge different rates for software fixes and hardware fixes. Since I was already doing a first job for him, which, btw, I didn't charge him for when I told him to just go see if his warranty was still good, I charged him "half-price." He still owes me the other $20 since he paid me $20 when he picked it up.

Good luck getting that money -- chalk this up as a life lesson; give your labor rates before doing the work. Myself and the senior partner are pretty much the only IT people they come into contact with. So, if he doesn't pay me the rest of the fee, neither myself or him will do business with him. When he comes crawling back because the PC Repair people at CompUSA and Best Buy start charging him between $50-$100 per hour, I'll say to him, "You still owe me that $20," and wait for his reply.

Dude you got ripped off. You should have told this motherfucker your rate before you began to work. If he didn't pay you what you quoted him you should have negated all of your work and turned the computer back to in its original form of when you first got there. Nice to see you worked 6 hours to make 20 fucking bucks. So you are supposed to make 20 dollars an hour but you got hoodwinked into making a little over 3 dollars an hour by a cheapskate. God you are naive. KKK is right, take this as a learning lesson.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted April 15, 2006 Report Posted April 15, 2006 Don't be too harsh on him -- there are plenty of things I goofed up on when I was in the early days of being part of the workforce. (I still have brain farts every now and then, too.) And besides, if he "turns heel" on this idiot, the retard customer would bitch about his business to everyone he possibly could tell. Just remember to give labor/parts rates before the work is done. The fact the guy was a car salesman might have been a clue in hindsight that this dildo thought the cost could be negotiated. Perhaps he should buy a car from this place and when the first payment comes due he should say he thought paying $x,xxx was too much for the automobile and send in half of what the bill amount is.
Guest Princess Leena Posted April 15, 2006 Report Posted April 15, 2006 3 dollars an hour doing that? Shit, I make way more randomly helping my friend's computer issues. I guess he should have gone back to pushing carts.
