But at least we know hockey works in NASCAR country... right?

Judging by that crowd, yes.

Didn't the Hurricanes have to comp tickets for the first two games of the Finals because of poor sales?

And so ends the fourth straight year of Team With A Red-Hot Goalie Emerges Out Of Nowhere To Make The Finals But Ultimately Lose

well, Roloson didn't exactly play (he never won or lost a game in the finals), so your assessment is wrong.

I don't think so.....

Nashville had to comp tickets during their series.

Why? The team had a red-hot goalie, emerged out of nowhere to make the finals, but ultimately lost. That's what happened, in spite of the Roloson injury. I'm beginning to dislike Max.

But the so-called "Red Hot Goalie" in your scenario didn't factor into the situation in the finals. Roloson left game 1 with the game tied and never returned. Conklin's blunder led to the goal, Conklin takes the loss. If anything, it's "Red Hot Team Emerges Out Of Nowhere To Make The Finals And Win For The First Time In Team History" since I can count on one hand the amount of people picking Carolina to even make the playoffs, let alone end up winning the whole thing. Probably the same amount of people that were picking Edmonton to win the conference. Carolina was considered a dark horse in the East, most considered them talented, but with a poor goaltending situation they might be a year away. Same thing in Edmonton. Both teams came from nowhere to make the finals.

edit- And before you bring up the fact that Carolina was a "popular" choice once they made the playoffs, everyone had pretty much conceded that the East was Ottawa's to lose. I don't think I read anywhere that Carolina was expected to make it past the conference finals at best.

The monkey on TSN had that final and Melrose had Carolina there, that's it.

I'm not so sure I would have given the Smythe to Ward. I mean, he was awesome and all for stretches, but he did get pulled in the Conference finals and if they had left him in there for that game, it's possible they wouldn't have even won that round.

It would've likely been awarded to either Cam Ward or Rod Brind'Amour. Based on performance, Cam Ward gets the nod.

I believe Sports Illustrated had the 'Canes finishing 28th out of the 30 NHL teams. They also said that the rule changes would HURT the 'Canes. Sports Illustrated knows NOTHING about hockey.

By this point, I don't know anymore.

The age of the elite goalie is probably over, now it's stick in whoever's hot and run with them. Look at Anaheim's runs.

I think it's a changing of the guard of elite goaltenders.

Brodeur looked human this season, as did Theodore (once considered elite...maybe by Montreal only) and Luongo. It's going to take guys like Bryzgalov and Ward to bring back the elite goaltenders. Ward wasn't the most valuable player on his team throughout the playoffs, but at times, he was sparkling. That's the makings of an elite goaltender. But the comparisons to Roy stop at how young they both were.

This new crop of rookie goalies that have performed in the playoffs could develop into "elite" goalies in the future. Guys like Cam Ward, Ryan Miller, Anaheim's goalie with the long name, etc.

That was the thought in 03 with Roloson and Giguere, but Roloson was older.

I think Ward and Miller (a great American goalie) will be great, by the way.

We are forgetting Kiprusoff, who is the best goalie out there. There's not much arguing regarding his greatness.

Calgary only lost because they were slow.

I bet the old Whalers fans and the "Hockey belongs in the North only" crowd really loved it when Bettman said Karmanos had a dream that hockey would succeed in Carolina, and that he was right.

I wonder how many millions ol' Petey has lost on this team. Cost him $20 million just to bail out of Hartford.

Sure, they can win titles, but they have fuck all for attendance...

They're the Florida Marlins of the NHL

Attendance wins championships?

Is that the new slogan in professional sports? Did they get tired of "defense wins championships?"
