E*TRADE

I'm interested in general trading and E*TRADE is sending me a new brokerage account kit by mail. I'm really new at this so I'm sure that account kit will only teach me so much. It will probably confuse me more then anything.

 

Any advice you guys can give me will be appreciated. Tips on what and not to invest in, books & websites I should read, personal and business experience of your own, etc.

My father's ideas are: Invest in companies that you know and use. You should not put your money in company that you have a vague idea in what they do or where they are located. Watch CNBC or another financial channel, occasionally they give a couple of good tips. And never, ever put all your eggs in one basket.

Are you investing a large amount of cash or a small amount? Are you looking at retirement or just trying to day trade?
