The Directors Cut DVD Discussion Thread

I never knew of dvdcompare.net. Thanks for the indirect link hookup.

You should also check out DVDBeaver.com. It makes a good companion site.

I've only seen the theatrical blade runner, which was an old VHS tape. On that site, they noted:

4) "Final Cut". Should be the "definitive Director's Cut" by Scott, and will be released in 2007.

Maybe I could wait, but I worry it will be "Lucased." I'm not sure even the original director should tamper with a quality film 2 decades afterwards, especially when the original was unquestionably released during that director's best years. Sure, they have every right to, but the results typically aren't that great.

DCs of Blade Runner are available everywhere, though.

I'd definitely wait. A new multi-disc set which will contain four different versions of the film (U.S. theatrical, expanded international cut, director's cut, and the "final cut") is scheduled to be released next year.

The Daredevil directors cut was tons better than the normal release, if you don't mind loosing most of the Electra side-story.

Don't mind? That's a big positive!

All I remember is while that horrible plot was going on, I turned to my girl and said, "you watch, Affleck and Garner are having sex."

And sure enough, they were.

I remember thinking the same thing, but I think he was still with Jennifer Lopez at the time.

Remember, kids, no matter how hot a woman is, there's a man who's tired of fucking her.

Is the bells scene in the church made a touch more realistic? Cause I remember I couldn't stop laughing when they were jumping from bell to bell. It looked so horrible.

Sadly, that wasn't one of the things they improved.

Not a directors cut, but there's a new Collector's Edition of Princess Bride being released next Tuesday, with new packaging and a new documentary. Just a heads up.

Curiously, the one scene that bigged me the most was when Elektra was slashing those bags to the Bring me back to Life song. SAIS ARE POINTY WEAPONS. They cannot slice, only stab. Jesus.

I downloaded the Elektra movie, watched the first assassination scene, laughed my ass off and baleeted the movie from my computer.

I do like Garner and think she has a future, tho.

I think I like the Daredevil movie more than I should simply because I really like the character, but Garner mispronouncing "sensei" REALLY hurts things. I mean, jeez, if TEENAGE MUTANT FRICKIN' NINJA TURTLES can get it right, Jennifer Garner should. It ruins the character. I do have Elektra sitting around, I got it and Punisher on sale like a week or 2 before the unrated version came out. Which reminds me, does that add anything important? And what about the new version of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly?

was just at Wal-Mart and saw a Directors Cut of Black Hawk Down

That is incorrect. There is an "Extended Cut" of Black Hawk Down released by the studio in an attempt to make more money but Ridley Scott's definitive cut is the theatricle release. When Ridley does a directors cut he labels it as such and includes a filmed introduction telling you the reason for the release.

Ridley has actual directors cut's of Alien, Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven (one of the greatest director's cuts I've ever seen, 50 minutes of footage and storylines reinserted, takes the film from a 6/10 to 9/10, how the studio fucked up and released that aweful truncated version to theatres I'll never know, but rest assured the DC will become a future classic in the way that The Shawshank Redemption was a flop on release and built up a fanbase over the following decade.)

The rights to Blade Runner have recently been sorted out, and after a 25th anniversiry theater run next year, a DVD will be released that will include the option to view:

a) The original cut

b) The original slightly extended international cut

c) Ridley Scott's enhanced cut from the early 90's

d) Ridley Scott's final cut which he is working on at the moment, and is what he intended the movie to be.

poch, that Robocop is part of the Criterion Collection, just so you're looking in the right direction.

That extended version of Robocop is also in that solid, and cheap, Robocop trilogy set that was released, so no need to track down the Criterion release for that reason alone.

Well I've been looking for this X-rated Robocop dvd and I can't seem to find it anywhere, for a cheap price at least (it's $35 used at amazon.com), and since I'm not shelling the cash for the box set (I truly hate Robocop 3) then I guess it's tough luck.

Anyone seen the 'extended cut' of Halloween? It was the original theatrical release with the tv-version scenes added-in. It adds a lot to Michael's backstory. It shows him as a child in the institution, and Loomis begging the head doctors to never let him out. There are some truly chilling scenes in it.

I watched it at my boy's crib, but I honestly wasn't in the best condition.

I remember it being fucking awesome, but ya knows, drugs, alchohol, all that.

Was that the specail 15th(?) aniversary edition that was released a few years ago with the two orange vhs tapes in the black box? I had that one upon a time...

There's a Director's Cut of Commando out now.

I might have to get that - is it much different than the original?

Just got done watching the director's cut of 1408 - some relatively major stuff changed in the film, moreless more backstory added with the main character and past family issues, and the ending is completely different than the original. Not as well paced as the theatrical version, but yet what is all added makes it just as interesting. Was a scene where a dead corpse is chasing Enslin around in the airducts in the theatrical version? I can't recall but that was one pretty decent scene that I believe was added here to this version.

Not really. Granted I haven't seen Commando in 4-5 years so my memory is a bit foggy but it seems like they shuffled up the sequence of a few scenes a bit and added more violence (never a bad thing).

Still it's worth getting due to the featurettes on the DVD, They briefly bring up the unintentional gay subtext of the movie in one of them and I watched the movie again and they were right, it is there. I mean Bennett is sooooo gay. Didn't notice it much when I was 12.

I know this post was over a year ago, but still. The "X-rated" version of Robocop is actually the unrated/director's cut version. This has been released on the Criterion, box set, as well as the recently released steelbook (both unrated and theatrical are included) versions.

Have any of you watched the Payback director's cut that was released a while back? I've been waiting to get it at a really cheap price, so I have yet to check it out. I hear it changes the film a great deal though. I really, really like that movie.

Yeah, it's a totally different film. They changed pretty much everything up from the music to cutting some characters and bringing in new ones. This new version comes off a lot more darker than the theatrical version.

IIRC the Robocop in the box set is practically barebones. You're better off getting the new release that came out a few months ago. I got it at Wal-Mart for $20 and I think they're still selling the director's cut of Payback for $14.

Edited: Troy has a director's cut coming out also.

But yeah, if you just want the best version of the original Robocop, the recently released steelbook is the way to go - I personally have both releases.

And yeah, the DC of Troy came out a few weeks ago. I ordered it from CH and got it about a week ago. I haven't watched it yet, but from what I hear it's an improved version of the film. The IGN review says:

Almost an entirely new movie and much better than the original. A must watch for fans and non-fans alike.

And although I feel that they're overstating it just a bit, almost all reviewers agree that it's a much better film, even if it's not "an entirely new movie" like IGN shouts.
