Guest Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 Even though it climaxed with Arn Anderson taking a golden shower, I liked the opening segment, and I was quite impressed with Benoit's mic work last night. I guess he's spent some of that time off standing in front of a mirror and being really angry at imaginary opponents. This makes him more "main event material" in the top brass' eyes, I hope. Oh, I also hope this finally shuts up all those people who continue to confuse charisma with being good on the stick.
Guest Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 Oh, I also hope this finally shuts up all those people who continue to confuse charisma with being good on the stick. I second that motion!!
Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 I think the only problem with Benoit's mic work is that it's a bit bland and generic. He cuts pretty much a standard promo in terms of what he's actually saying. His delivery is very good though and has the right amount of intensity to be a serious promo rather than some dumb spiel. He's definitely improved (and I always thought he was better than people gave him credit for), now he just needs to improve on his material, or it will get a bit monotonous after a while.
Guest Dangerous A Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 So let me get this straight. Benoit cuts an "intense" promo and we have praise from smarks. HHH cuts an "intense" promo and he is crucified for it. If it's just outright bias against HHH I'll understand, but Benoit's mike work last night was nothing special. It wasn't terrible, but nothing I haven't seen him do before. Bottom line is Benoit is only capable of cutting intense promos, so where is his smark criticism. Or is it just outright bias because Benoit is "the man" on this board?
Guest Ripper Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 You know what was really scary last night...how natural Jeff and Matt Hardy looked during thier promo. The did a DAMN good job. While I too didn't think that Beniots promo was that special, HHH's are just....soo.....boring....and slow....and paused....out ....for ....noooo ......reasonnnnn. Beniot might have been intense, but he got it out for jeebus sake.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 I believe it is because Benoit only uses about 20 words, while HHH uses about 20 minutes...
Guest Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 Or is it just outright bias because Benoit is "the man" on this board? Hell Yeah Beniot's the man. Although his promo on RAW was quite a bit better than before his injury.
Guest Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 Also The Hardyz promo Shocked the hell out of me for how natural they acted and it seems like RVD's promo's are improving bye the week.
Guest converge241 Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 I never understood why people got on his case and why Anderson had to be even thought of to put with him. He was never bad. He always got across the main points and conveyed whatever was necessary. compare Benoit with Arn last night, world of difference. Or Benoit's with Austin and Flair's rambling. That might be the result of the writers but not 100%
Guest Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 Yeah, he was "great" on the mic [/sarcasm} Why can no one admit that Benoit has flaws? He's a great wrestler, but him and the mic just aren't very good friends.
Guest Brian Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 Anyone remember when Benoit's promo's were stumbling, babbling pieces of crap. He's definately improved.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 Why can't people genuinely like something? His promo was short and to the point. It let us understand his character, his motivation, and his mental state. He conveyed cockiness and vengefulness. It gave a hint at things to come and left things open to the imagination. Did I mention it was short and to the point?
Guest Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 Anyone remember when Benoit's promo's were stumbling, babbling pieces of crap. I do. That's why I started this thread. And good call on the Hardyz' backstage segment. They're still dull, but they seemed more human last night.
Guest El Satanico Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 Beniot's mic skills work for him and that's all that truly matters. Sure he isn't dripping with charisma but that's not that big of a deal with him. He looks like a straight to the point take no shit guy that would rather kick your ass then talk you to death. His serious no bullshitting talking style fits his character. Beniot talking like Rock wouldn't fit with his look or character at all. But i will agree that Beniot has improved on his delivery. Now about ripping on HHH's "intensity" while liking Beniot's intensity. When Beniot does the whole "intense promo" thing it sounds natural. When HHH does "intense promos" it sounds unnatural and forced.
Guest Ravenbomb Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 and doesn't HHH intense have a '~' squiggly line with it?
Guest dreamer420 Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 So let me get this straight. Benoit cuts an "intense" promo and we have praise from smarks. Or is it just outright bias because Benoit is "the man" on this board? 100% true my friend. and it is outright bias because benoit is looked at as the man on this board. he is one of the best wrestlers in the world, to put him on a plateau above all other wrestlers is stupid. i don't know, maybe it's because haven't read enough scott keith reviews yet.
Guest RickyChosyu Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 HHH's intense promos are too slow, and too loud. Rock yells, but he moves quickly with his speech, never drawling on and on about anything in particular. He goes off on random thoughts, but quickly returns to the point at hand. He weaves it all together. HHH just plods...along...at a rediculous...pace, and never seems confortable with what he's saying. Benoit was quick, too the point, and didn't try and force himself down our throats by needlessly yelling. HHH is never "slaughtered" either. He's not the victim of bias, he's just not that great on the microphone. When he was the great heel from about early 2000 to early 2001, he got over for screwing with people in and out of the ring, and generally just acting like a prick all the time in his matches and angles. His promos weren't the best. The "You never...saw it...coming..." promo of his is a fine example of a plodding heel interview that takes WAY too long to make it's point, and that was back when HHH was still The Man to a lot of people.
Guest Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 100% true my friend. and it is outright bias because benoit is looked at as the man on this board. he is one of the best wrestlers in the world, to put him on a plateau above all other wrestlers is stupid. i don't know, maybe it's because haven't read enough scott keith reviews yet. I'm not bias. I think they both suck on the mic. It hurts me to say this, but out of the two....I think Triple H is better..... ::Can't believe he said something good about Triple H::
Guest Dangerous A Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 "::Can't believe he said something good about Triple H::" It's not saying much for HHH now is it. But I think HHH, although slow and plodding, actually gets the point of the feud or story better than Benoit does overall, IMO. (remember the IMO part)

Guest Dangerous A Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 "Anyone who disagrees with that is.....a smark." And exactly where are you going with that?
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted June 4, 2002 Report Posted June 4, 2002 If point/time ratio were to measured here. Benoit wins, no doubt 2:1 (2 points for every one minute), while HHH is like 2:20. If interest/time ratio were to be measured, it is hard to say. I can't think of a time when Benoit got HHH-level time on the mic. So what I am saying is, the next month or so will be the true test of his promo power.
If Benoit rambled for twenty minutes like Triple H does, then I'd hate listening to him, too. As others have already pointed out, Benoit's style is short and to the point. Triple H is all grunts and groans and veins bulging. While I'm at it, let me say that I abhor all this tossing around the term "smark" like it's an epithet. We're ALL smarks, people. The very fact that you are here proves it. Accusing someone of being a Scott Keith copycat for, oh, ripping on RVD (which someone did in another thread the other day) is fucking idiotic.
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Posted June 5, 2002 Report Posted June 5, 2002 Benoit's promos usually make me cringe, but I have to admit that he has charisma. I think the less Benoit says the better.
Guest Rick001 Posted June 5, 2002 Report Posted June 5, 2002 Triple H takes 10 minutes to do his whole in ring thing and then another 10 to "ahhh talk-ah like-ah this-ah and-ah give-ah a-ah boring-ah twenty minute-ah promo-ah" and meanwhile the fans are curious to see if HHH will explode becuase his viens are bulging out of his fucking skull. Benoit was very to the point last night, he turned on Austin becuase Austin injured him. At least Austin will have a great match before the WWE sidelines him.

Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Posted June 5, 2002 Report Posted June 5, 2002 what about hating undertaker and hogan?
Guest dreamer420 Posted June 5, 2002 Report Posted June 5, 2002 i said hating hulk hogan. i wasn't listing everything I thought of or I would have been writing that all night.
