Guest guerillagenius Report post Posted June 16, 2006 I just got Under The Iron Sea by Keane from oink and so far it's decent. I really liked Hopes and Fears and it had probably one song that I didn't like. I like 'Is it any wonder?' which seems to be the first single they are putting out from the new album. Anyone else had a chance to listen yet? Also I could careless if people don't like Keane so don't even bother. vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted June 16, 2006 I stood front row at The Doves when they were at Austin City Limits last year. I had never heard of them before. The only reason I stood there was because The Arcade Fire was playing directly after them (actually an hour later. Standing in the 100 degree Texas heat with a bunch of fat hipsters...) and I wanted to be up front for their crazy good live show. I also remember that both Keane and Coldplay where playing at ACL as well. However, I never saw the members of any of the bands at the same place at the same time... The plot thickens... They were part of a really great concert I went to they were absolutely awful. They merely suck on the radio. But trust me, at a concert, that guy's voice is PIERCING. So you're left with a guy with a voice that makes you want to stick knitting needles in your ears, and a terrible, spastic keyboard player. I'm a much better piano player than that fucker. And I really do find the keyboardist to be a little... disturbing and a lot terrible. In short, they're a really vanilla, wussy, derivative band. I guess if you like soft rock, but I don't. Well, for the new generation. Elton John and Jerry Lee Lewis could play like madmen. Shit, Trent Reznor's far more competent than those hacks (EDIT: by hacks, I mean the guys from Coldplay and Keane, not JLL and Elton John, obviously) , and writes melodies. I guess it's just more apparent in Keane than Coldplay because the Keane guy's vocal meoldies are ultra-simple too. He just belts it out like that makes up for it. I really liked "Trouble" when it came out, but if you think about it, the melodey's all in the vocals, the piano backing is really basic. I actually liked Coldplay's first album too, but they wore out their welcome really quickly by doing the same damn song over and over. Besides the "Computer Love" song, I can't really dredge up any memories of their past two albums, even though the singles were on the radio constantly. (which Franz Ferdinand totally stole) Snow Patrol didn't quite blow the socks out of my ass, but they were pleasant, the guy could sing live, instead of just wailing. Of course Keane was so bad, after a song and a half, I had a headache and literally walked out of the arena onto the smoking deck until their set was done. I don't see the connection between Keane and the Doves. Doves more of a melodic trippy feeling to it, whereas Keane is pure British adult-comtempo/pop music. Anyway, I've seen the Doves live twice and they were amazing both times. Elbow is another band worth checking out for their trippy, laid-back jazz/funk inspired stylings. I can also tell you that the singer for the band talked rudely to me when I wouldn't let him use this one exit to go smoke outside (I was volunteering at the fest, following CMJ's orders).
