Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted July 29, 2006 Wasn't there some type of screwjob that happened over the US title when OMG won it in a dark match at Starrcade 1995? I thought I remembered reading that Kensuke Sasaki who was the champion refused to job the belt and so they told him the match would be non-title. They had the match, OMG won with a splash, and then the referee gave Gang the belt and people considered it a title change. Any truth to this? If so it might explain the "out of nowhere" element of the OMG winning. Well?? Can anyone elaborate on this i'm very curious... From memory, they actually taped two versions of the match. The one we saw and an extended one. There is more talk about this on the net somewhere so if you want to check out the specifics go ahead.

The deal was that New Japan didn't want Sasaki, one of their main guys, to lose to someone like OMG. The match took place after Starrcade went off the air, and Sasaki actually played babyface, even though he'd been a heel literally moments before. The finish saw OMG splash Sasaki and what looked like a three count; I believe Sasaki kicked out just before the three count. OMG grabbed the belt, but the referee restarted the match and Sasaki won. The version that aired on WCW Saturday Night cut away with OMG holding the belt, and I believe they even added in the sound of a bell ringing, and it was presented as OMG winning the US Title. Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2006 Why was OMG fighting for the US Title in the first place?
Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2006 OMG actually got a decent heel push in WCW. He was presented as a key member of the Dungeon of Doom, and was the last man in the ring with Randy Savage when he won the World Title at the World War 3 battle royal. I think he also wrestled Hogan in a Nitro main event, but I could be wrong.

Yea I think this sums up the story. I recall that one of the Apter mags ran a story on this in kayfabe terms and as a mark I ate it up. Weird.
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2006 It's funny that people mention Booker beating Steiner on the last Nitro, considering Booker was largely jobbed out before that point. Seriously, after he lost to Steiner at Mayhem 2000 Booker was out of the main events for the rest of WCW's run. He got the belt on the final Nitro because he was going to the WWF. Anyway, I don't think anyone is arguing that Booker was an undeserving champion but rather a badly booked champ. I've always wondered...who booked the final Nitro, WCW or WWF? Or was it a kind of joint effort? It was pretty much all WCW but WWE made a couple of minor changes, such as the tag titles not changing hands.
