Darkseid :: Ron Pearlman. I couldn't think of anyone else and figured he could do well since he has the voice and because of how well he looked in Hellboy style getup/makeup. That said, I bet Michael Ironside would work too - moreso even since he kicked ass as the voice of Darkseid in the animated series'.

 

Good for the look but I've never seen Ron speak the same way. Yeah, he sounds huge and gruff but doesn't have quite the attitude IMO.

 

Brainiac would probably end up being cgi or something, though. Metallo, for some reason, I picture as Christopher Walken but probably isn't up for such an action-intensive role.

 

I can't help but wonder if Nuclear Man from Superman IV was supposed to be Bizarro at some point but nixed in favor of...a snarling blond-mulleted euro-trash looking punk with long fingernails. It's funny how that movie is pretty much Mark Pillow's entire acting career, and he was dubbed over with Gene Hackman's voice to boot!

 

Livewire I'm totally against. If she ends up in one of the movies she should be a lackey that's out of the picture in 10 minutes.

 

Cyborg would only work if they did the Death and Return arc, and the iron has long cooled for that.

 

Without D&R we don't really have a way to fit Doomsday in.

 

Prankstar, Toyman, Mxy? I think only Mxy could work and only if he's in an absolutely twisted subplot.

And as for Walken as Metallo...well, he could do the non-fight parts, like Christopher Lee did with the recent Star Wars movies.

 

EDIT: As for the Clark/Superman thing, I think I read somewhere about something: Most people think, since Superman doesn't wear a mask, that there'd be no reason for him to have a secret identity. Like Luthor pointed out, IIRC: "Why would someone that powerful want to be an average person?"

She was just brought to the regular comic earlier this year.

 

She's too damn campy and would kill the tone that Returns established.

If done right, the campiness factor could be toned down enough to make her a contenda.

I'm well aware of that; that's why I said "hardly." A large number--although not all--of JLAU fans are comic geeks, some less hardcore than others, but still comic geeks.

 

And Harley transitioned to the comics pretty darn quick, was always way more fun and well-liked, and got her own spinoff. Harley was even in Hush, damnit. How long did it take for them to use Livewire in the comics again?

Plus, you haven't refuted the "3rd stringer" comment. We've gotten Luther so far in SR. Batman Begins sequel will probably have Joker and already BB used Al Ghul. They can still make much better use of Supes' admittedly limited rogues gallery than have her carry a film.

 

Of course, Singer's yet to breathe a word of what he has in mind for the follow-up, and Superman II didn't bother using any established villains except for Luther as a comic foil, and it still turned out okay.

 

Although I guess your final point has merit--Timm and company turned a lame-ass ice pun villain into one of the best Batman villains (although Schumacher ruined that in B&R).

I finally got to see the movie this weekend and I'm terribly disappointed by it. It was too light on action, I found some lack of continuity regarding this movie and Superman II, some terrible plot holes (nobody even cares to ask Clark were he was or what he was doing all those years he was gone??), there was lack of chemistry between Lois and Clark/Superman, and don't even get me started on Lois' kid. Superman came off pretty good (the flying and all that stuff was terrific) and I think Routh did a decent job, as did Kevin Spacey, but the movie just fell flat for me. Of course it doesn't help that I'm not a Supes fan in the least, but I thought I'd enjoy the movie anyways. Boy was I wrong.

Just because we make comments about some logic leaps the movie takes, doesn't mean we don't like it. I loved the movie.

 

And just because you like something doesn't mean it's perfect & without flaws.

That doesn't make sense that no one in the movie made could make that connection, least of all, investigative reporters of one of the largest newspapers of one of the largest cities on the planet.

Yeah, I think that was in one of the 'prequel comics' or a scene that never made it in or something. It really should have been in the movie.

I was bullshittin' with Vyce or somebody on AIM the other day and I thought that it would've been cool if they had shown Batman sitting at his computer during the sequence when they were showing everyone reacting to Superman's return. They could have had the cam on the screen, then slowly rotate until it faced Batman, and he could just be sitting there, passive.

I just picked this up on HD-DVD today, so I'll give my thoughts on it after I watch it.

 

I did see it in a digital theater, which was amazing. It was the first time I've ever been to one and even though the movie was good, not great, the presentation was fantastic. Hopefully it will showcase some of that on HD-DVD.

 

I also got Superman 1 and 2. I'm looking forward to Donner's Cut.

Those of you who have pre-ordered copies of Warner Home Video's forthcoming Superman: Ultimate Collector's Edition might want to think twice. Due to a massive technical blunder, the Superman III: Deluxe Edition discs contain the original 2001 release of the film, rather than the advertised disc with commentary, additional scenes and a vintage featurette.

 

Reports indicate that The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection and the individual release of Superman III: Deluxe Edition are unaffected. At this time there has been no word on whether or not Warner intend to issue replacement discs. Even if replacement discs are made available, non-US residents who purchased the set will most likely be left out in the cold. When you combine this with the fact that the advertised original 1978 Dolby Stereo soundtrack for Superman: The Movie is also missing, what could have been the year's best release becomes a less than attractive proposition

I have the Donner Cut, and watched it last night.

 

I miss the extended trashing of the small town and didn't like the inclusion of the screen-test scene (the dialogue doesn't match the fact that Clark was never that open about his crush on Lois in any other part of the two movies) instead of the pink-polar bear scene. The ending is also a let down without the Fortress fight (as silly as it was). Superman getting thrown into the Statue of Liberty was great. I always hated the Eiffel Tower stuff, so I was glad that was gone. I didn't like how Clark slept with Lois before he lost his powers, given my views on the "Woman of Kleenex" issue. The Marlon Brando scenes just fucking ruled.

Jerk, I disagree. I was grateful that the test screen scene was inclunded. IMO it was better that Superman was revealed that way rather than him fucking up as bad as he did in the Lester version. Also, the ending was better. I ALWAYS hated the magic kiss ending.

 

Yeah, the Donner cut was great. Clearly superior to Lester's fake version IMO. I can't thank Warner Bros. enough for finally releasing it. It was great to finally see what the movie was supposed to be as originally intended plus the mini-documentary they included as an extra was nifty to check out. I HIGHLY recommend everybody check it out if you're a Superman fan.

 

Edit: Just to clarify, Superman Returns is NOT the first movie to be released on DVD, HD-DVD, AND Blu Ray. That honor went to Mission Impossible III.
