Pele say stop downloading movies

Recommended Posts

Guest Smues

I just saw a commercial with Pele telling us to fight movie piracy. I laughed for a couple minutes straight, and I'm not sure why. The whole thing was very confusing. Has anyone else seen this? What the hell does Pele have to do with movie piracy?

They whole thing is completely gay. Just like the record companies, Hollywood thinks that downloading movies is the reason for business being down. God forbid those douchebags look in the mirror.

They put out Dukes Of Hazzard, The Honeymooners, The Omen, & Basic Instinct 2, and they wonder why business is down. Just about every movie is a remake, a sequel, or a tv show. They have no good ideas, but it's ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING that's the problem.

DVDs are released a week & half after the movie debuts on the big screen, so most people would rather wait and watch it at home. Hollywood could delay the release of DVDs, so as not to cut into the box office take, but it's ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING that's the problem.

A lot of dumbass know-it-all actors & musicians go around yapping about politics & other crap, not realizing or caring that red-state people like movies & music too, but surprisingly get turned off when said actor/musician says that people who voted for Bush are stupid, or carry on & on about Scientology & how much they are in "love" with Katie Holmes. The Dixie Chicks are a great example. They pissed off their fan base with their Bush comments, refused to take it back, and now they wonder why ticket & album sales are down, and they've had to cancel concerts because of low ticket sales. Must be ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING that's the real culprit. Curses!

As for Pele, who doesn't like Pele? I'm sure if they could dig up Gandhi, he'd be doing anti-downloading commercials.

I know a good few people that only download movies and dvds and refuse to buy them. Personally, I like buying the hard copy. While that isn't the sole reason sales our down, it has attributed to it.

They've put out alot of films other than these, and its spread over different production companies and studios, not just "hollywood". There's also clearly a market for these films. If they just put out arthouse pictures, they'd probably alienate more people and see there sales drop even further.

Really?

I guess this is just random ranting? And again, there is a market. And people gave out to the Dixie Chicks because they're country and western singers, most of their audience is from the south and republican. It was a case of biting the hand that feeds.

Back on the subject, I've seen Pele in a viagra commercial before. I guess he'd be closer to the subject considering his age, but it was still a bit wierd to hear this advice from Pele. I'd say it's just aimed to get all those soccer fans that are to insecure to come out about it, feel comfortable.

"I know a good few people that only download movies and dvds and refuse to buy them."

- So how is this hurting the industry? I also know people like that who "refuse to buy", and you just proved a hole in the anti-downloading argument. Since these people would NEVER buy them, Hollywood isn't really losing any sales. Even if downloading is abolished, all your friends have to do is wait till HBO re-runs said movie 8,000 times. I also prefer buying them, because they're cheap, & I like the packaging.

(Editors note: HBO may or may not rerun a movie 8,000 times, this was sarcasm.)

"They've put out alot of films other than these, and its spread over different production companies and studios, not just "hollywood". There's also clearly a market for these films. If they just put out arthouse pictures, they'd probably alienate more people and see there sales drop even further."

- Yes, I am aware that there is not one allmighty Hollywood, it's easier to type one word than typing "all the different production companies & studios." You've found me out, I'm lazy. But I've also seen all the different production companies & studios circle the wagons under the banner of "Hollywood" when they felt they were coming under attack from all those dirty, mean right-wingers who called them unpatriotic. But from now on, I will try not to stereotype all of Hollywood, when we all know it's really just all the different production companies & studios. Where was there a market for The Honeymooners? I mean, "C'm on."

(Editor's note: "C'm on" was typed in the vocal stylings of little Jimmy from Southpark, Colorado.)

---------------------

"DVDs are released a week & half after the movie debuts.."

"Really?"

- No, not really, that was called sarcasm. I was attempting to use humor to illustrate that DVDs come out fairly quickly. Obviously I was not succsessful in said attempt. I will now go to the box & feel much shame.

----------------------

"I guess this is just random ranting? And again, there is a market."

- Where was the market for Basic Instinct 2? Name one person not named Sharon Stone who thought it was a good movie, or even a good idea? That's another problem with Hollyw... , I mean, all the different production companies & studios, Sharon Stone's 15 minutes were up a long time ago & no one had the guts to tell her. Even though it bombed, still no one will tell her she can't act. Do you know why? It's because of ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING. My ranting is never random, all the voices in my head understand its direction.

-------------------------

"And people gave out to the Dixie Chicks because they're country and western singers, most of their audience is from the south and republican. It was a case of biting the hand that feeds."

- At last we agree on something.

You know, they USED to wait a long time untill they released the DVD (or VHS) of a movie. Somethimes even asfter it was released to video rental stores. I remember waiting close to a year before I could buy Star Trek: First Contact.

Now a days, though, it seems the DVD is released 6 months after the movie. I saw Goblet of Fire in November, and in March I got the DVD. Same with V for Vendetta- the DVD come out next month,a dn I feel like I just saw it in the IMAX. Some times a movie comes out that your interested in seeing, ut hten you figure you'll spend over $20 at a theater, so why not wait untill it's out at Blockbuster and save a few bucks if you only have to wait a few more months?

Of course, Hollywood is starting to find ways to make money off of the quick turnaround. They release the barebones DVD, then release a 'Special Collectors Edition' with the bonus disk that has ALWAYS been included for free for $5-$10 more (Chronicals of Narnia, Batman Begins, Goblet of Fire). Then a few months later they release the uber-special directors cut for about $30 (Underworld, X-Men 1.5 comes to mind).

As for downloading, as a rule I try not to download any movie I don't plan on buying later on. I did that with Episode 3 and Serenity.

Downloading isn't killing the industry. The industry said that VCRs and other home recording machines were killing the industry in the early 80's, and then look what happened: that turned out to be a whole new market from which MORE money could be derived.

Apple had the right idea with iTunes. Low prices for downloadable, CD-quality music. Not everything is available, but most is. So why can't the movie industry take note of this and start their own movie downloading ring?

There's always going to be those assholes that will release pirated material. They're just that: assholes. Don't get rid of the medium because some of its users are bitches.

Did anyone get a quote from Pele on how ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING hurt the ticket sales of the new Pirates OTC movie?

I have to say, I used to buy almost every DVD that I was remotely interested in. I stopped doing that. I will now only buy DVDs that I actually want to own the originals of - those are usually TV show sets, bigger movies that I'm a huge fan of, anything with Vincent Price or directed by Hitchcock, Criterion stuff as well. Everything else, that I want to have and be able to watch whenever - but don't want to pay $25+ (CDN) for - I will rent and copy. (I realize this has nothing to do with downloading, but I just wanted to throw that out there).

Semi-tangent time...

A lot of these DVD releases are fucking cheap, too. Cheap not as in inexpensive, but cheap on quality. Constant Gardiner - love this movie. Want to own it. Want the original. But I'm not paying ($28 CDN @ HMV) for a DVD that is so fucking barebones with features that I might as well use it as a coaster. Same thing goes for Batman Begins (though the price drop is $9 @ Sunrise, it's still an awful release to even bother purchasing).

I'm so sick of the studios releasing these flicks that deserve more, just to satiate the people in the short-term who can't wait for a bigger release of the DVD with more features and better packaging.

The Pele commercial makes me laugh.

He just seems so out of place for a piracy commercial.

If you can't see a steady decline in the quality, and even moreso the creativity, of movies in the last few years, you're friggin' blind.

On the plus side, reality shows aside, TV's been putting out some great stuff.

I actually saw Lost in Translation playing in a theater near me the day I got it on DVD (not an arthouse theater, either, a chain theater in a mall)
