CD Drive won't appear in My Computer

Recommended Posts

I have an IBM Thinkpad that's at least 4-5 years old. I rarely use the CD/DVD-ROM Drive but now that I do, it is not working. In the device manager there is a yellow icon that says the driver needs to be updated, but when I try to scan for updates, it takes me to the original spot the non-updated file is.

It is a Matshita SR-8178 Driver, and I cannot even find it doing a Yahoo search. Any help would be great, this is pretty much my last resort. Thanks

Edit: Thanks for trying Leena, but yes it is a laptop. I'm thinking I need a new one, but wanted to see if I was missing the obvious fix.

If the drive isn't showing up on My Computer, if it was a desktop, the likely cause would be your computer isn't reading the drive is there at all... something wouldn't be connected right. But notebooks may be different, I don't work much with them.

As for the drivers... I don't know. Older ones like that are nearly impossible to find.

you should be able to pop it out and replace it with a working unit, no? or is finding a working unit that is compatible with your processor the problem?

I also have a Thinkpad that is about 6 years old.

I don't know if it that's easy to replace with an old Thinkpad. He could get an external one. But, either way, might as well buy a new laptop if you're gonna get that.
