The thing that messes up Beltran's run at MVP is Reyes, Wright, and Delgado, compared to Pujol's Rolen. Beltran has more protection with Delgado and Wright batting behind him. But either one as MVP is fine.

Pujols is the MVP. He's the best hitter in the league by a mile, and even though Beltran plays a difficult defensive position and plays it very well, it's not enough to make him a more deserving candidate than Albert. If Pujols had the kind of talent surrounding him that Beltran does, the Cards would be 15 up on the Reds right now.

Isn't there a separate award for the best hitter? If the Cards miss the postseason with the best individual talent in MLB, I think there's no way he beats Beltran out for the same reason Howard can't win it either. Remember that Beltran also missed a bunch of time early this season and despite Pujols' insane start he's only 2 HR and 2 RBI better than Beltran right now. If A-Rod got his last year for defense and winning the division, I'd say Beltran deserves it for superior defense and leading his team to the best record in the league.

Sure, but Pujols missed some time with that abdominal injury. I guess there isn't a cut and dry case for either player, but I'd still give my vote to Pujols.

I agree with you. I just referenced Beltran's injury because everyone remembers that Albert was out for a while. All things considered had neither guy been injured, Howard likely wouldn't lead the league in HR or RBI. I think Albert is easily the superior player, I just think it would be awesome to see Carlos win the MVP after his miserable inaugural season in NY.

The Astros salvaged a win in the Reds' series today. The offense EXPLODED~! for 6 runs in the 6th inning. It was the biggest inning the Astros have had in over a month. Next up is the Pirates.

The St. Louis Cardinals signed my Dad's third favorite player (behind Julio Franco and Orlando Palmiero...my Dad likes old utility players.) Jose Vizcaino. I assume he'll be a backup plan if Eckstein is hurt. Is Eckstein hurt? What's the deal with him?

Ryan Howard's getting the NL MVP if the Phils make it to the playoffs.

Speaking of which, just got home from work to see the Reds FINALLY lose. Woohoo! Go Brett Myers, give those Cubbies a beating.

There's no way he beats Beltran or Pujols just because the Phils make the WC. Finishing 10-18 games behind the Mets will only make it easier for Beltran to finish 1st/2nd with Howard looking like he's no better than # 3 right now.

Mike Schmidt won the MVP award in 1986 when the Phillies finished about 20 games behind the Mets. Ripken won it in 1991, Dawson in 1987, Arod in 2003.

Agree about Utley. And if you think my pointless add-on was just an excuse to segue to the following, well you would be correct.

From Pat Gillick in SI:

"It's not that he's selfish, but he cares about taking care of himself," Gillick says of Abreu. "I'm not sure he's a leader-type guy, while Utley is. Chase had been reluctant, out of respect for Bobby's status and service, to exert his leadership. It seemed since David and Bobby left, Chase has been more comfortable imprinting his style of play on the team."

Dear Pat Gillick, blow me. The point of taking a shot at the best Phillie over the past decade was? He could have just made the Utley point without the Abreu shots, instead of trying to justify getting nothing in return for him (no hidden agenda in that quote at all, honest).

I also like the fact that Chase is such a leader that they had to jettison Abreu to show it?!? If he was truly a great leader shouldn't he have nutted up if he didn't like the way things were running while Abreu was around.

Moose heads to the 15 day DL with a sore hammy. Its supposedly not a big deal, and the last time he went on the DL in August and came back in September rested, (2004), he had a ERa of less that 2 in 4 September starts and a great playoffs.

Plus him being on the 15 day dl is going to be retroactive to the last time he started. Did anybody see the catch that Preston Wilson made in the stands against the Mets. Unreal!!!!

That was pretty amazing. The guy in the crowd he bowled into was pretty gracious about the whole thing, too; he helped Wilson get his hat, which had fallen into the stands during the play.

Pfft. Figures that Preston dives into the crowd and starts doing amazing things for the Cardinals. Vizcaino will probably hit for the cycle in his first game for em. And Preston always looses his hat. Like..always. I like his 'do rags'. Sweet, man.

Mets have scored seven through three innings. Wonder why Trachsel of all people gets the best run support of all Mets starters.

Yeesh. Royals are just destroying the Indians thus far, as it's 10-1 KC and they're still in the bottom of the first. Weren't the Royals the team Cleveland beat up on in similar fashion a few weeks ago?

Pretty excited about this Mets and Cardinals series. I'm also cautiously optimistic, since Jeff Weaver has been surprisingly pretty good his last few starts, Mulder is apparently coming back, and the Mets have some injuries/slumps going on right now.

Yeah...uh....nevermind. :(
