Yuna_Firerose 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2006 The first time I tried installing 'net Explorer 7, it came back with an error, so thusly I tried one of their solutions. Which was to go into my register and allow full control on the main HKEYS - right clicking, goin to Permissions, etc. I put Full Control/Read on the user groups, everyone, administrator (which, being the admin, I should've already had...) And then I restarted. Now my desktop won't load and I keep getting a pop up error message for my Dell Wireless Card. Always, non-stop. "Encountered an error and needs to close", that one. I can access the Task Manager and the Registry Editor, but trying to open anything is MAJOR LAG. It doesn't help that the Wireless Card error message is popping up all the time, thus proving difficult to get to the Start Menu (I'm trying to restore to a system point). Basically, I think I fucked up in the registry, adding permissions which conflicted with others. I'd REALLY hate to crash as I have a lot of important documents on my laptop. Can anyone help? It would be muchly appreciated.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2006 unfortunantly Yuna, I can't help...but it just seems weird because I updated and I don't have any issues like that!
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted September 5, 2006 I assume you can't run any programs... you could try one of the registry cleaners to fix your problem. You're probably better off reinstalling Windows. You won't lose anything. And stop using IE.

Yuna_Firerose 0 Report post Posted September 6, 2006 After talking with Dell's tech support twice (going over what happened at least twenty times...), their first solution was to uninstall the wireless adapter and then go online to redownload. Good thing I could hook up mom's cable connection downstairs... That seemed to help, if only a little. When starting up I go tthe message: "Notification dll did not register successfully, and will not function". But at least I could get to my desktop after a long wait. Everything is still slow, but I'm still able to run programs. I've backed up most of my files either thru online storage or on CDs, and I'll crash it later tonight. And to clarify, I only use Internet Explorer for my online classes. The site does not work properly in Firefox. Other than that, it's Firefox all the way for me -- nothing can beat tabbed windows. Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted September 6, 2006 Internet Explorer has a Beta update out that uses the tabbed browsers...but still, go with Firefox...

Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted September 6, 2006 It's good that you backed everything up. In the future, don't touch anything with the registry unless you absolutely know what you're doing.

Good thing I could hook up mom's cable connection downstairs... Well, there's one of your problems. You own a Dell. Yes, well, a Dell looks pretty damn good when its free. Through my college loans I was able to get it for virtually nothing; of course I'll eventually have to pay it all back. (and now I hear from other classmates they're now offering 60gb laptops -- mine was only 40. Bitches.) I got it in Feb. and so far I've never had any problems. Many of my editing friends are surprised I can Premiere Pro 1.5 on here without any crashes. But on the related subject of my computer, I was looking online for upgrades out of curiosity and I see I could get a DVD-R/RW/CD-R/CD-RW combo for around $180. Seems like a good deal for an all-in-one drive, but how would that upgrade work? I mean, if I get it, would installing it affect my hard drive (in terms of losing any data)?
