TWiB 9/11 - 9/17

Recommended Posts

Well, the Jays saved Roy Halladay from another tough luck loss coming back in the 9th to tie it against the Rays, but he's still not going to get his 17th win after going 9 innings giving up 3 runs.

I'm just glad they actually won a game he started. The Jays were 0-4 in Halladay starts since I bought my Halladay jersey. I was thinking of burning it as a sacrifice or something.

I forgot to mention that Adam Lind of the Blue Jays, who's from right here in Anderson, hit his first HR Sunday. He's 13-28 since being called up, and also his 6 doubles. Go Adam.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- When Ozzie Guillen learned that alcohol is banned after games in the Coliseum clubhouses these days, the Chicago White Sox manager responded with profanity and anger.

His club couldn't muster nearly that much passion during the actual game --

....

He doesn't run my club. I run my club," the mercurial manager said of A's general manager Billy Beane while complaining loudly within earshot of reporters.

I wonder if Ozzie's an angry drunk?

Seriously, what a baby. When your team's in danger of missing the postseason a year after winning it all, maybe you should be more concerned about winning games and less about getting plastered.

Maybe that's what gets them going these days? ;)

With Wily Mo at cleanup for the rest of the season, Ortiz will get the Bonds treatment everytime he comes up late in the game with runners on.

Just in time for my fantasy semifinal and possible finals too. Joy.

Great performance from Cole Hamels, and a hearty "fuck you" to my local Fox affiliate for showing the Yankees/Red Sox game instead. I'm tired of this bullshit. If you're going to air a Yankees game, then leave the Phillies the hell alone so Comcast can show the game. What the hell is the point of a "game of the week" when I can see the same team every day of the season?

Congrats to Rich Hill, who gets the Cubs first complete game of the season. Took 118 pitches and the Reds had three or four at-bats where they fouled off pitch-after-pitch, but nice work to blank a good offensive team. Ten K's and only one walk. Hill's really arrived. He's cut his ERA in half since returning in July.

Fuckin' excellent game in Oakland right now. Feels like playoff baseball and Frank Thomas has four of the five Oakland RBIs right now. The reaction from the announcer's booth over MacDougal's 3-2 slider with the bases loaded in a tied game was great.

Two part question:

1) With 45 HRs and 40 steals, do you think it's possible for Alfonso Soriano to become the game's first ever 50-50 player?

and

2) If so - how significant would you rate the accomplishment?

I'd say it's not looking extremely probable but it's certainly within the realm of possibility and I would rate it as an all-time great season.

It would be an odd season but I'm not sure if it would rank among the very greatest. It's certainly flown under the radar though. With 45 homers, 40 steals and 21 outfield assists, Soriano is soon to become a very rich man.

Definately not this season. 10 sb's and 5 homeruns is alot for 2 weeks left in the season. Especially when the player doesn't get enough singles and walks to make up for all of the stolen bases. Congrats to Soriano though. He was so close to joining the 40/40 club in 2002 and 2003. He missed it by one homerun in 2002.

Another great thing about the season is the year that Frank Thomas is having. I think that if people had any doubt he was a Hall of Fame baseball player - he erased it this year.

He's way over on all of the monitors at baseball-reference.com (except one). I think he should be a first ballot. Is that the consensus opinion, or no?

Frank Thomas didn't need this season to make it into the hall of fame. He had a hall of fame career before his dropoff in Chicago. He was one of the best hitters of the 1990's and was an OPS machine. I can think of Jeff Bagwell as a person who needs another big season to get themselves into the Hall of Fame.

Man that sucks for Derrek Lee and his family. Hopefully they figure out what is wrong and can somehow stop and fix the situation.

"My experience is you have to play for something in these situations," Baker said. "In these situations, you have to play for a sick person or a grandmother or your mom or your dad. You play for D-Lee, you play for D-Lee's daughter -- you've got to find something to play for."

"It's usually not bad during the games," Baker said. "It's worse when you go home after the games. It's like anybody -- while you're at work it's cool. When you get off work, everything comes back down. You've got to play. You've got find a reason to play."

Leave it to Dusty to say something as stupid as that. I don't think that the game is the most important thing in that clubhouse.

Guest Felonies!

You know, compared to his usual wisdom, "let's win one for Derrek" is actually pretty decent.
