Exslade ZX 0 Report post Posted November 6, 2006 Well it's a pretty simple question, here at school, for the only form of internet requires one of those DSL/LAN cables. BUt there's no where on the back of the computer I just brought to school for it. The only thing there is the size of a regular phone connection, and that's too small. I went to Best Buy, and the guy told me I actually needed to add the little port for the DSL in the back, which is like 15-20 dollars, and for them to install would be like 30. And really, I'm not trying to pay 50$ just for internet at school. (Nor do I feel like taking my comp all the way there) So question is, is there any alternative? I assumed there would be some kind of dual ended cord, or maybe some kind of router that has both the DSL cable, and phone cable size, but there doesn't seem to be? And if there isn't, is there any place I could buy the port, and get installation for free? (Circuit City/Radioshack, something?). My main thing is I don't feel like paying that extra 30 for installation, especially when it looks like something I could just pop into the back myself. Although I don't want to try that. Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted November 7, 2006 Looks like you just need an ethernet card. You can find them anywhere for $8-15. It's very easy to install, but you need to be comfortable opening your computer up. And judging by the fact that your computer doesn't have an ethernet card, it must be old and rather cheap now anyway, so go for it.
Pegasus Kid 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2006 You're going to need an Ethernet card. There is no dual ended port. The port you're seeing is connected to your 56K modem and won't be able to help you out here. I suggest you buy a cheap PCI 10/100 Ethernet Card. There are any number of manufacturers and you can get them as cheap as $12 from major chains like Best Buy. You'll have to open up your computer. You'll see a row of PCI slots (just look for the slot that your 56K modem is slotted into). Just slot in the Ethernet card (it can only go one way) and use a small phillips head screwdriver to lock it in place (you'll see little holes where the screws will go). Your computer (assuming you have Windows 98 or later) will auto recognize the Ethernet card and you're good to go when you leech off your school's network.
