Sideburnious 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2007 Yeah, I saw it about a month ago. It's a very good film and I'd say you'll enjoy it. On saying that though If you've seen his previous film "The Devil's backbone" there are alot of similarities between the two: Both start off with the same type of narration. Both deal with Spain during times of civil was. Both have children who expierience extraordinary things while the adults deal with very realistic things. If you haven't seen Devil's Backbone, you'll probably enjoy this alot, just personally, it ran a bit too close to home. (the above paragraph wasnt really a spoiler, more my opinions on it, but just incase people wanted to go into this film with a clean slate/opinion) Now an actual (of kind of) spoiler, and my main problem with the film: the fantasy aspect of the film only lasts, max about 25-30mins spread out over the entire 2 hour film. For a film that was advertised to seem mostly fantasy, as in the maybe an opening in spain and then the girl is thrown into this fantasy kingdom. The fantasy is mainly a backplot and focuses mostly on the adults. Don't get me wrong, all the adult action etc makes a good movie, just the complete opposite of what I was expecting. monkey 0 Report post Posted January 4, 2007 I have watched it and enjoyed it a lot although the others I was with seemed less sure. The film is sort of disturbing and the advertising in England had it as a dark fairy tale. Well it is dark but wouldnt let a kid anywhere near the film. Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted February 9, 2007 I thought this movie was incredible. Don't go in this expecting to see a twisted adult version of a fairy tale. I'll say the plot is more about a girl's imagination and how it copes with the struggle of the Spanish Civil War going on all around her. It's an excellent film, I'd be shocked if this didn't win Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, and was even more surprised that it didn't get nominated for Best Picture. An absolutely beautiful, terrifically acted, well thought out film. Maybe it's just me, but with the combination of Volver and this film possibly breaking into the American conscious, Spanish film is finally establishing itself beyond its national market? I'd be really pleased with this, as guys like Almodovar (who directed Volver amongst a host of other great films) deserve quite a bit of recognition, as does Guillermo Del Toro (actually Mexican, but makes many of his films in Spain) who has done a bit of work in American cinema and had success with Hellboy and Blade II. Also, Sideburnious, it's funny you mention this film was akin in some ways to The Devil's Backbone- Del Toro also directed, wrote and produced that one. Apparently the stories of the Spanish Civil War are close to him. Oh, and I'm not entirely sure why they translated the English title to "Pan's Labyrinth" when the Spanish title (El Labirinto del Fauno) actually translates to "The Faun's Labyrinth", but I guess we're supposed to think the faun's name is Pan? Downhome 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2007 I saw this three weeks ago today. I don't know if I'd call it the best movie of 2006, but it's worthy of being in the discussion. I downloaded it the other day, got English subtitles, and I've watched part of it again, and I still love it. I can't wait for the 2-disc R1 release, it sounds like a packed set, with great packaging.
