March 1-4: Honda Classic - PGA National, Palm Beach Gardens, FL (Luke Donald)

March 8-11: PODS Championship (formerly Chrysler Championship) - Innisbrook-Copperhead, Tampa, FL (K.J. Choi)

March 15-18: Arnold Palmer Invitational (formerly Bay Hill) - Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Orlando, FL (Rod Pampling)

March 22-25: WGC-CA Championship - Doral Golf Resort & Spa, Miami, FL (Tiger Woods)

March 29-April 1: Shell Houston Open - Redstone GC, Humble, TX (Stuart Appleby)

 

I'm still ticked that they moved the former WGC-AmEx Championship to Doral permanently. The AmEx was the only one of the three big WGC tournaments that was routinely held overseas.

I hope Doral was made tougher, then that tourney would be fun.

 

I also hope Sawgrass gets no rain in May, and the winner shoots +10 in the Players'. About time they moved it in the calendar.

This week is a reminder of what a devilish course PGA National is. The Bear Trap is just eating players alive. Too bad more top players aren't playing it.

Definitely agree. I think it's really stupid that all the WGC Championships are being contested in the United States. Just absolutley ridiculous.

 

I also hope Sawgrass gets no rain in May, and the winner shoots +10 in the Players'. About time they moved it in the calendar.

I played at his "home course" this past summer. Pricey and very decent at best. Too gimmicky of a course, like most new courses these days.

Mark Wilson wins the tournament. Villegas and Weekley were eliminated on the second playoff hole; Wilson birdied the third to beat Coceres.

 

For the record, Wilson is not a rookie -- this was his 111th PGA Tour start.

Good job for Wilson who kept himself alive with some long clutch putts yesterday, especially on the first playoff hole where it looked like he was toast.

 

From what I've gathered on Wilson he turned pro in 1997 and played for the University of North Carolina where he was the Ben Hogan Award winner (best NCAA golfer) in 1996. He was also the Wisconsin state golf champion as a freshman. His best finish last year was a tie for 9th at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson and out of 24 tournaments he made the money sixteen times but only made one top ten.

 

Pgatour.com's media guide didn't have very much information other than this. It looks like this guy has been in and out of the PGA and Nationwide tours for a while and lost his tour card last year before regaining it at Q School this year with a tie for 29th.

Nope, that's Dean. He won the 2006 International to finally become something other than "That Guy in Annika's Group".

He probably has, but he's won his card a few times. He'd just never been able to keep it at the end of the year until now.

72-72-72-64 will likely be good enough towin the Masters this year (provided Tiger's not getting his fifth coat). It would have won by two in 2006, one in 2003, and got into a playoff in 2004.....Come to think of it, what was the last winning score to hit double digits not by Tiger; Someone should look it up, I got back to 96 and no one hit double yet. Jack set the record in 65, Floyd tied it in what, 78?

 

God, I shouldn't add any fuel to the fire that is Leena's Adam Scott crush.

That 64 would be a bit difficult to pull off I believe since it would have to tie the course record set by Norman in 1996, right?

 

I always get pissed at Augusta time anyway since Norman is my favorite golfer and he always had the worst luck at the Masters. I really thought he was going to win in 1999 (after the collapse in 1996) when he made eagle on 13 but then Olazabal rolled in a twenty footer or so for birdie and tied him for the lead and I knew then that it was over.

63 was the record set by Nick Price (third round) in 1986...Norman had the almost exact-same birdie putt to tie on the 18th in 96 (first round), but, it too, lipped out and he shot 64.

 

Ditto about Norman in 99. I'm essentially indifferent to him, I never really pulled for or against him, but I remember really wanting him to get it done in 99, but I knew it was over with Olazabal's 20 footer.

-8 won't win. Unless the greens are crazy fast. Tiger can shoot that if he's playing C-level golf.

 

My disdain for Adam Scott comes from him not winning enough. Master of Top 10's. Even when he wins, it's brutal like the Players. He's as clutch as my other boyfriend, Alexander.

Norman did tie the course record in 1996 with a 63 in the opening round. He and Price are the only two to have shot 63.

Calc gets his 13th career win on Sunday, and that leads to a great tournament in Orlando, The Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.

 

They've taken away a bit of the Sunday drama by turning the water-guarded 16th from a par 5 into a par 4, IMO, but still a great closing stretch of holes.

Sad news involving Arjun Atwal, who, allegdly, was involved in a drag race around a tight corner, resulting in an 100-mph crash and subsequent death of the young man he was racing. Details are still very sketchy, and an investigation is underway.

I wish I watched this week. Glad to see Vijay win something. Was getting a little concerned. I love the hard workers. Now, if only his putting won't be dreadful at Augusta, he has a shot.

And we're two freakin weeks away from the Masters, my favourite sporting event of the year. Coupled with baseball season starting and Wrestlemania, that's a great fucking seven-day span.

 

Intriguing lead-up to this week's WGC at Doral (CA Championship???), with Tiger stumbling on the weekend at a course he's owned before; but he's also had quite a bit of success at Doral, which should add a little spark in his last tourney before Augusta, ditto for Phil;
