CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2007 Here's a factoid for ya: The last two times it was held on Easter Sunday, a first-time major winner slipped on a green coat: O Meara in 98 and Philly Mick in 04. Im trying to talk all my family into an Easter Saturday supper, or Easter Sunday lunch or brunch. Most of the men are onside with this, but we're arranging plans three weeks ahead of time, which is virtually unheard of.
CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2007 For (estimated) Time #245,630, we've doubted Tiger over a hiccup, and he's said "take that!" right after. Up by four at Doral over Wetterich and Nick O Hern.

CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted March 25, 2007 Sergio is probably going to be fined by the Tour for spitting into the cup following a bogey. That's disgusting; I'd hate to be the guy who had to fish his ball out of the cup right after that.

I'm not even going to attempt to explain how great a tournament the Masters is to someone who, (presumably), doesn't follow golf. It's pointless, I can't put into words the unique candour of this tournament.
USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted March 25, 2007 You don't need to talk down to me. I watch golf, but Easter is more important, I would think. But hey, different families, different strokes. By the way, my initial post was more of a good natured jab, not a judgmental one.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted March 25, 2007 My bad then. I mistook it for talking down to me, thus my subsequent talking-down in return. Forgiveness granted, and expected. Wetterich got it to 8 through 17, but Tiger's got it wrapped up it looks like, regardless of what Johnny Miller is saying. Three up going into 18. It's weird to see them go to Houston next, as opposed to Sugarloaf in Atlanta, aka Phil Mickelson's Doral. Edit: This post brought to you by CanadianGuitarist. CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted March 29, 2007 We're god damn close to the Masters, and I'm getting anxious as fuck. To ease that pain, Top Shelf Wednesdays on the Golf Channel is offering, tonight, 97 Masters Highlights. Tiger, of course, won by a million, but this is where he first became a household name to people who didn't follow golf. I actually had this tape, it was on sale at a variety store in 2000 for 99 cents. Also, I'm pretty intrigued by what will follow at 10 pm "The Top Ten Masters Meltdowns". I'm calling for Van de Velde to eke out a win over Phil last year. By the way, we should get a pool going on how many highlights we'll be seeing of Van de Velde between now and July, with the Open Championship returning to Carnoustie. Guest Queen Leelee Report post Posted March 29, 2007 Shouldn't Masters Meltdowns only contain things at Augusta. Greg Norman or Scott Hoch at #1. Both were painful.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted March 29, 2007 Golf Digest did one of their great retrospectives on the '97 Masters this month, where they interview everyone who was involved in the tournament and go back over the entire week. It's the top 10 major meltdowns on TGC at 10:00. Norman should still be #1. Phil won't even be top 3.
CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted March 29, 2007 My bad. It is indeed Major Meltdowns, not Masters as I originally said. I'm astonished I missed Norman, but I still give the nod to Van de Velde. Hoch should make top 10, but I doubt top 3. Let's go with Van de Velde, Norman, Phil as 1-2-3.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted March 29, 2007 Interesting show, as they showed a lot of moments from years gone by. I would have put Phil lower, just because I didn't think this blowup was much worse than his three-jack on the 71st at Shinnecock. 1) Jean Van de Velde triple-bogeys 72nd hole of 1999 British Open, loses in playoff 2) Phil Mickelson double-bogeys 72nd hole of 2006 US Open, loses by 1 3) Greg Norman shoots 78 on Sunday, blows 6-shot lead in 1996 Masters 4) Arnold Palmer blows 7-shot lead on back nine of 1966 US Open 5) Ken Venturi shoots 80 in final round of 1956 Masters 6) Mike Reid blows 3-shot lead with three holes to play in 1989 PGA Championship 7) Doug Sanders misses three-foot putt to win 1970 British Open, loses to Jack Nicklaus in playoff 8) Sam Snead triple-bogeys 72nd hole in 1939 US Open, misses playoff by two shots 9) Ben Hogan plays final two holes of 1960 US Open in 4-over-par, needing two pars for playoff 10) Ed Snead blows five-shot lead in final round of 1979 Masters
Guest Queen Leelee Report post Posted March 29, 2007 I'd have Norman at #1. Van de Velde was due to pure stupidity. Phil, to a lesser extent. Norman just got his ass kicked hole after hole. After coming close so many times in winning a major in the US and truly proving he was #1, that day was the cruelest, prolonged agony the golf gods could muster. And we saw all of it. CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted March 29, 2007 Not that I disagree with you, Leena (by the way, Princess Leanne was the name of a spam webcam girl I got in my email today), but I think its brutally overlooked that Faldo shot a 67 on Masters Sunday when playing with Norman. Don't get me wrong, Norman collapsed, but I still think Faldo deserves more credit than does, say, Pawl Lawrie.
World's Worst Man 0 Report post Posted March 29, 2007 Don't forget Thomas Bjorn blowing the '03 British Open, handing the victory to a complete nobody.
Danville_Wrestling 0 Report post Posted March 29, 2007 Not that I disagree with you, Leena (by the way, Princess Leanne was the name of a spam webcam girl I got in my email today), but I think its brutally overlooked that Faldo shot a 67 on Masters Sunday when playing with Norman. Don't get me wrong, Norman collapsed, but I still think Faldo deserves more credit than does, say, Pawl Lawrie. I agree with this but then again, I'm a big Norman fan. I think Faldo shooting a 67 really applied a lot of pressure to Norman and made the situation a lot worse for him as he started to slump in the round. This is the most painful memory for me as a golf fan because I tuned in anticipating Norman to put on the green jacket to a massive ovation but got one of the worst golfing collapses instead. I still can't believe Paul Lawrie has a major championship but that's the British Open for you. I remember rooting against Van de Velde because I wanted Justin Leonard to win and totally forgot that Lawrie was tied with him in the clubhouse after shooting a decent final round when he started ten shots back. I'm glad the Open championship is headed back to Carnoustie because although tons of people complained about the course setup I like courses where par is hard to come by, especially if its a major championship. After all, these guys are pros so they should be able to suck it up and handle it. However, this year I imagine the wind might not be as big of an issue as 1999 when huge gusts where deflecting shots all over the place away from tight fairways and caused the high scores. Red Baron 0 Report post Posted March 29, 2007 Carnoustie is my third favourite Open course behind St. Andrews and Royal Troon.
