Ravenbomb Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 I've heard some of his stuff (Autumn's Child and some stuff from Trout Mask Replica) and I like it a lot. Any reccommendations on what other stuff of his I should hear?
Guest Tzar Lysergic Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 I like him very much. Safe as Milk is my favorite that I've heard, but I'm still in the process of delving into him myself. Check out his version of "The Torture Never Stops" off of Zappa's Cheap Thrills.
Ravenbomb Posted March 24, 2007 Author Report Posted March 24, 2007 He did a "Torture Never Stops" cover? Sweet deal, that's one of my favorite Zappa songs
Guest Tzar Lysergic Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 I wouldn't call it a cover. Zappa's performing on the track, and it's on a Zappa record. Beefheart's just doing vocals. The arrangement is waaaaaay different that the other versions of "Torture.." that I have. Kind of a thumpy electric plastic delta blues number if I remember right. On the subject of Zappa/Beefheart collaborations, do you have Bongo Fury? My opinion varies on the album, but lately I've been playing it all to hell. It's a live performance from Texas after Zappa and Van Vliet hadn't seen one another in a long while (I think. It's mentioned in Zappa's book.) The whole album is the bluesy Zappa elements thrown together with Beefheart being a nutbar, and a couple goofy clunker tracks that are fine for a lark.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 Check out Lick My Decals Off, Baby and Doc at the Radar Station.

Literally I just got some songs of his last night/this morning. Is the Beefheart/Zappa "Torture Never Stops" much like the "Zappa in New York" version?
Giuseppe Zangara Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 Oh, change that "some stuff from" Trout Mask Replica to "all stuff" from it, ASAP.
Guest Tzar Lysergic Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 Is the Beefheart/Zappa "Torture Never Stops" much like the "Zappa in New York" version? Nothing at all. Either download that song or just go buy Cheap Thrills. It's like 7 bucks and is ok with two or three really good songs.
Ravenbomb Posted March 24, 2007 Author Report Posted March 24, 2007 Will do. There was a clip of a live song of his that I really liked, but I can't find the whole song. I think it was Tropical Hot Dog.
