Hot Fuzz

Bravo, Pegg and Frost. You've done it again.

Front to back this was one of the most enjoyable movie-going times I've had in a long time. From the beggining buildup of Pegg arriving in the calm little village to "Holy FUCK" last half-hour this movie fucks shit up and enjoys doing it. Every mystery and action movie clichee that you can think of is in here and the cast is perfect, particularly Timothy Dalton as a sketchy supermarket owner and Jim Broadbent as their local chief.

Liked Shaun of the Dead? Like to laugh? See this bitch.

My sucky local theaters aren't showing it. I'll have to travel about 50 miles to get to a theater that does.

EVERY place around here is playing In the Land of Women though. Meh.

Yeah, all of you should go check this out out. Here is what I said in the other Hot Fuzz a month ago:

Just as I said I was going to do, I did go to the screening and Q&A in Atlanta, GA this past Wednesday night. It was, without a doubt, my favorite event that I've ever attended in my life. The theater was packed, and I'm pretty sure that they had to turn people away. I got there very early, and stood in line (I was about six back or so from the front) for a few hours. Little did I know that I actually had a priority pass and didn't have to stand in line, but hey, what are ya gonna do?

Anyway, the theater was totally packed, so I'd say there were about 350 to 450 rabid Pegg, Frost, and Wright fans in all, depending on how many the theater actually holds. The movie received numerous standing ovations and extended periods of applause once the movie was over. During the movie, everyone was laughing, clapping, and everything else. So much so that we all missed a few follow up jokes quite a few times, so I'm going to be sure to go watch the movie once it's released wide.

The main bit that got the loudest pop was when:

Simon Pegg delivered a dropkick to the face of a shotgun wielding granny!

After the movie was over and the credits started to roll, you could just tell that everyone in the theater was blown away by what they had just watched. The Q&A then started with Pegg, Frost, and Wright and it lasted around one hour. All three of them told great stories, talked about their careers, and just had fun with the fans as they interacted with us all. It turns out that Wednesday was actually Nick Frost's birthday as well, so we all sang happy birthday to him twice as he was given a birthday cake. After all of that was over, anyone who wanted to meet the three guys and get autographs and pictures could do so. I got all three of them to sign my Spaced box set as well as my R2 version of Shaun of the Dead.

If any of you live near where a screening will be taking place, go to it! I drove about two hours or so to get to the theater in Atlanta, and waited outside for around three or four hours, and it was more than worth it.

As for the movie itself, my opinion is more than likely skewed because of everything that took place, but I liked it just as much as Shaun of the Dead, and it gets my highest recommendation. Even if you can't watch a screening of Hot Fuzz, then at least go watch it when it opens wide.

EDIT:

I was going to see it again this weekend, to see how a normal audience would react to it, but it's not playing anywhere near me within an hour or so, so meh.

Hot Fuzz was NOT released into theaters near me. Instead they elected to bring in "Slow Burn", "Amazing Grace" and "In the land of Women". So apparently, this is going to be very much like a ATHF situation where I will not be able to see the film until its DVD release. Figures.

It is on at quite a few theaters near me, so I saw it at the nearby Showcase Cinemas (they also showed Shaun of the Dead). This is pretty much just as good as Shaun was. What I enjoyed about it is that it was sorta spoofing the action genre but it wasn't flat out obvious. As in they didn't just restage a scene from another movie and call it parody. It was small bits tossed in, maybe a vague reference to another movie (Shining, Wicker Man, spaghetti westerns). The only blatant spoofing was of Point Break, and that was a classic bit.

saw it last night. not as funny as 'shaun' but still very good stuff. it starts pretty clunky, but it keeps getting better & better all the way to the end (which is EXTREMELY rare for a comedy, especially one that clocks in at over 2 hours).

they got the michael bay aesthetic DOWN. it took me so long to figure out why they were doing these rapid-fire cutaways between every single scene and why the sound effects were so big and intrusive during the most banal shit, but once i got the joke it was fantastic. anyone who's irritated by the michael bay aesthetic should check it out.

Just got back from the flick. Very funny. The movie builds slowly and the balls to the wall ending is very unexpected, but much appreciated.

Definitely Bad Boys II. Transporter (I know, not Jerry Bruckheimer) was really obvious. I know there were a ton of other references, but I may not have gotten them all because I'm not a big action movie guy. Someone else help out?

I just got back from the film and enjoyed it. Agreed that it takes a bit to build up, but a smarter, funnier spoof of action films could not have been done. This was tons better than Shaun of the Dead, which I actually enjoyed nonetheless.

Not as good as Shaun, but it's not bad by any means. I merely prefer Shaun due to how well the relationship between Ed and Shaun was built as opposed to the pretty forced relationship between Danny and Nick in this one (although that was obviously done intentionally). The Point Break references were fucking GREAT, and even the villains in this flick were surprisingly well thought-out (meaning that

their all-too-simple reasons for killing who they did made them that much creepier

). Was the "cockicidal maniac" from the Winchester in Shaun the shopkeep in this? I could've sworn she was.

All in all, this movie is fucking TIGHT. It did everything that most action flicks can't do for me: get me to root for the heroes. The moment

Angel takes a look at

Point Break in the convenience store and starts getting hardcore

until the end was completely ridiculous and more intense than most action flicks do these days.

Overall, 8/10 (I'd give Shaun a 9.5/10, FYI). Not as good as Shaun, but by no means bad or even a waste of money.

What's this Run, Fatboy, Run trailer I saw? Is it another Pegg/Wright/Frost trip, or is it just Pegg?

- Cockicidal was it as were many of the actors from Shaun.

- Run, Fatbot, Run is a David Shiwmer movie if I remember correctly. Simon is just in it.

I saw this film for the second time last night with a group of people seeing it for the first time and everyone loved the flick. It was better the second time around. I was able to see more things that I missed from the first viewing a month ago. Also, I'm wondering who else was able to pick out the cameos in the film from Peter Jackson and Cate Blanchette (sp?)?

I would suggest everyone see Big Nothing with Pegg and Schimmer. Pretty good movie once you get past Peggs horrible "american" accent.

Yeah, that's right. It also stars Dylan Moran (the lead of Black Books, also in Shaun of the Dead).

I also recommend Big Nothing, it's a great little flick that almost no one seems to have heard of.
