Interpol - "The Heinrich Maneuver"

Recommended Posts

Obvious aside, that's an awful title. The song itself? Eh, pretty by the numbers for these guys, which doesn't give me much hope for the new album. The biggest difference from their norm is this song's emphasis on the guitar rather than the rhythm section; I don't think that's a great direction for this band, as their best material is usually bass-and-drum centered. (I think the only Interpol track where the guitar riff absolutely makes the song is "PDA.") The production's a bit crunchier, too, more processed than anything from their first two albums, a sound which may not do them any favors, either. Chalk that up to being on a major label now.

YOU KILLED MAYOR CERMAK.

So where'd you find the new song?

It didn't work for me. My Flash player is moody, though, so I'll try again later. I like Interpol, especially Turn on the Bright Lights, but they're not really in heavy rotation for me, because I do tend do get burned out on the formula.

EDIT: That "your 20 worst lyrics" thing I followed a link to is pret-ty messy.

I heard it, and I have mixed feelings. At one hand, it's undeniable catchy. On the other hands, it's too by the numbers.

I also saw the tracklist for the new album, and some of the song titles are dreadful, particularly "There's No I in Threesome", which sounds too much like the title of a Fall Out Boy song.

Heard it on XM at work, it wasn't horrible. But I don't really have great expectations for the album anyway. Interpol is one of those bands where I love the songs when they come up on shuffle, but cannot listen to the album straight because the songs all start to sound the same. More so on Antics than Turn On.

I do not see them being able to pull this song off live at all. When they toured Toronto shortly after Antics came out they left off half the songs because they hadn't figured out how to tweak them for the live shows. Like Inc mentioned, different production on it that might hurt them.

I do like the song though. It's kind of a gimme nowadays when people hear Interpol the "It all sounds the same" line gets busted out which I won't refute but I still likes how it sounds.

So, saw them at The Guverment in Toronto on Thursday night. Played four songs from the new album, "Pioneer To The Falls", "The Heinreich Manuever" one that I can't recall the title of and "Rest My Chemistry". If you loved them before, you'll love them even more now. If you didn't, don't buy the new album.

Oh, and if they release "Rest My Chemistry" as a single it's going to make them fucking huge. That song sounds fucking epic live and is one of the softer-sounding tracks they've done so if it gets onto the radio it'll have massive crossover appeal.

This is from a live show they played in Kitchener a few days ago.

I hated this band when my girlfriend started listening to them, but I am so glad that I decided to give them another go several months ago and they really grew on me - especially Turn on the Bright Lights. Haven't heard any of the new stuff, but I'm psyched for it, that's for sure.

I really don't want to be quick to pass judgment considering I've only heard the single. I have faith that the new album will be a solid one. Now, whether or not it's better than Antics and Turn On The Bright Lights.... I won't know until I purchase it.

"Evil" and, to a lesser extent, "Slow Hands" were the stand-outs. Based on one listen, this new one has no real bad songs (unlike Antics) and some geuinely good ones. I particularly like—in spite of its name—"No I in Threesome" and "Mammoth."

I'm listening to this a second time. I'm still cringing that they fucking named a song "No I in Threesome," even moreso since it's actually a good song. I'm fine with it being about a regretted menage a trois, but really, calling it that?

I also loved Antics. This is pretty damn good though, though it could use a different album cover.
