We really should put hate crimes in the same category as pedophilia, which is to say that it should have lists of offenders and everything. Both involve non-specific targets and hate crimes are just as bad as pedophilia in terms of the person executing it because of a deep mental problem. Much as a family with kids might not want to move to an area near one or more sexual predators, a family of a certain race or lifestyle would probably want to make sure they weren't moving two doors down from someone who was convicted of killing a family full of "muds."

That was a bad example. But if a person was registered for crimes such as spraypainting slurs on people's cars or homes, or having a history of violence against people of different races etc, then that might be something worth knowing for prospective neighbors.

Then put more effort into formulating your argument so that I don't have that option, Spoon. Why shouldn't it be fair game if you do a half-assed job at giving an example?

 

As for telling the new neighbors that Bob in the split-level hates teh gays, it's not the worst idea in the world, but how much information like that are people entitled to without having to look it up in the public records? I don't know if there should be "This person is a racist" signs on people's lawns, or anything of that nature. Furthermore, I have a tough time agreeing that hate crimes are tantamount to pedophilia, if only because it's a bit harder to really delineate what it is that constitutes a hate crime, and not everybody out there even acknowledges the existence of such.

I think it's a pathetic parallel to draw that calling someone a racial epithet and kicking their ass is tantamount to screwing a ten year old.

The biggest problem is determining if it's a hate crime or not. Unless you have witnesses around actually hearing someone say "I'm gonna go out and whip a nigger/faggot's ass" you can't determine if it was one or not or they have a background of hating on a race/gender/whatever. This bill also included women and it would be very easy for the prosecution to say that a man assaulted the woman because he hates women, rather than the woman would be an easier target for a robbery for example.
