Failed Bridge 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2007 Besides the obvious large amount of Red Sox, Yankees, and Braves (somehow they still remain strong up here) hats I see around here there are for whatever reason alot of Oakland A's hat being worn as well. snuffbox 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2007 The 20th century was hard for Cubs fans. You didn't have to worry about Kerry Wood/Sosa/Sandberg/Grace/etc being traded off for pogs. The money has been been spent on the North Side. It sucks that your team has always found some way to blow it despite the money spent, but at least you've been given actual MLB rosters. In Milwaukee, from the time just before I started watching until very recently, there was no reason to hope that Sheffield/Vaughn/Burnitz/Surhoff/etc would be kept around. It simply would never happen. Now we see Jenkins being kept, Sheets got a big contract & might be given an extension, Bill Hall was signed, even a big free agent in Jeff Suppan. Even when we do trade guys now (Carlos Lee, Doug Davis) we actually get something in return besides a warmer bench. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Everybody was on that bandwagon, and it wasn't "so people would shut up about them already cuz we hate it." That was an unforgettable month of baseball, and I'll respect you more if you come right out and say it instead of trying to cloak it in your so-called exhaustion with the hype. Oh, it was a good series, and exciting playoffs before that. I don't remember anyone wearing Red Sox hats, though, and I was on a college campus at the time. Frankly, around that time ('04) was around when the Brewers started to pick back up (Sheets had a great year, guys like Bill Hall were starting to come up), and I did start to notice more people paying attention. It hasn't just been this year when people suddenly came out of the woodwork. Miller Park has drawn over 2 million fans the last two seasons. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Just don't start emulating White Sox fans and telling me that you guys were just "demanding a winner," or else I'll take the similarity further and try to bust your meth lab. snuffbox 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2007 It wasn't a matter of 'demanding a winner'. At all. We knew there was NO chance being given our team by its ownership. None. Every single star player that came up in the last 15 years before the team was sold was let go for practically nothing. On top of the team being completely disregarded by its owners it was also a period of renewed success for the Packers for the first time in a few decades. Obviously, people were going to pay attention to the more beloved/older team that is very successful over the team that was neutered every single season right out of the gates. Cleveland always manages to earn the top spot in that discussion. Seattle is up there too but they haven't had major sports franchises as long as Cleveland. We lump Green Bay with Milwaukee obviously and the New England Patriots are basically Boston based. You can't count Buffalo really because the Knicks, Yankees, and Mets can't be claimed by Buffalo. I'd say Cubs, Indians, Dodgers, Mets, Brewers, in that order. The Dodgers had it too good from 1958-88 to merit consideration. I think the Texas teams have to rank in there somewhere. 46 and 45 years with only one league pennant and no world championships to show for it. Failed Bridge 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2007 We always have Cleveland at number 1 because their last world title came in 1948 yet they've had sports teams there since the late 19th century. Indians winning it in 1948 with the Browns winning nothing and Cavs winning nothing made them automatic firsts. Seattle came in at number 2 because they've literally won nothing. No World Series for the Mariners, no Super Bowl victories for the Seahawks and the Gary Peyton/Shawn Kemp led Supersonics made it to one NBA Finals and when they did Michael Jordan started his second of the two Threepeats. If we do count two sport cities then San Diego has been worse off than Buffalo. Chargers and Padres have made their respective championship game/series once in the past 20 years and got totally trampled by the opposition in each case.
