CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 I'll be interested to see what effect the schedule change will have on the field for Canadian Open.
Guest Report post Posted July 2, 2007 My favorite major, at the toughest course in which it is played. Gotta love it.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 I agree with you King. Carnoustie is easily my favourite course for the Open tournament. I hope this course plays tougher than Oakmont.
CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2007 It's not so much a golf question per se, but how do the Nascar's playoffs work? (Nextel Cup? Isn't it sponsored by Sprint now?) Top ten finishers into a 4-race playoff? Do their accumulated points reset also? On that note, discuss the set-up of the FedEx Cup, if it needs re-tooling, how you'd lay it out, etc. I'd like to see it as the top 70 money earners and not points, and then dwindle down in the final four events, say 50, 40, and 30 in the coming weeks. If points were to be done, maybe try and have as few points as possible, say 1 point for a win, 5 for a fifth-place finish, 100 for a missed cut, etc. I don't think I like the idea of the points resetting as they are. I have no problem with a little advantage to the guys who won the most points throughout the season, but I don't like that they need to give each player a new point total. I suppose it's akin to the hockey point system, and then a playoff seeding, but.....What bothers me most is that we'll potentially be remembering who missed out on next week, instead of who won a tournament, which is no small feat. How often does that happen in sports with playoffs? Steve Bartman might have an answer for you, but that'll be about it.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted July 4, 2007 The Top 12 drivers in the points advance to a 10 race chase for the cup. 5,000 points are awarded to each driver, plus 10 points for each victory.
CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2007 KJ Choi and Stuart Appleby have the clubhouse lead after 36 holes, on a vastly different scoring day than yesterday. With two potential President Cuppers atop the lead, Mike Weir is currently -4 for the day, playing fairly inspired it looks like. Tiger also shot a 66 today, and he's six back. CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2007 How does playing 'on the clock' work? Currently, Steve Stricker is. What's the time limit for shots now? Does that mean from address? from the beginning of his pre-shot routine? Will his playing partner, Mike Weir, be affected?
World's Worst Man 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 The entire group is put on the clock, which is why the slow players are disliked. I think the timing starts when the player reaches their ball, but I think I may have heard that it starts after they pull their club out. Which is dumb, because then the guy could take all day to decide on the shot he wants to play.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted July 16, 2007 Seve Ballesteros has retired. http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/britishopen...tory?id=2938199 He was probably one of the top 5 golfers of the late 70s-early 80s, and definitely the most entertaining to watch. Red Baron 0 Report post Posted July 16, 2007 Somehow he managed to make impossible shots look easy.
CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2007 Give us an over/under on the amount of times we'll hear about Van de Velde this week. Rod Black brought it up when mentioning TSN would have coverage of the Open, and this was during a ball game. And it's gonna be on ABC again, as it was in 99. By the way, who's doing commentary for it, with Baker-Finch and Faldo on CBS? Tirico and Zinger? A buddy of mine, who knows little about golf, said on the Tuesday of US Open week "Last night, my dad was watching some golf preview show, and they kept showing Phil Mickelson suck at the US Open last year". I assured him that while it was indeed shown a lot, being on different courses, it would pale in comparison to how much we'll see Van de Velde this week. CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2007 Terry Gannon and Paul Azinger are the lead analysts for ABC. Hopefully, TSN will carry the early-morning coverage from the BBC like they have been in recent years before ABC comes on the air. I think you'd probably hear more about Van de Velde if he was actually playing this week. With Mickelson, it's different because it was just the year before and he was expected to be a contender again this year. Still, there'll probably be a feature on him on the weekend, and I think we'll hear him mentioned in commentary at least a dozen times.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 Pretty surprising to see Sergio Garcia leading after the first round. It rained earlier so the ground is soft making the course a bit easier.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 I don't think it's that surprising. The real surprise would be if he's anywhere near the leaderboard on Sunday.
CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 How about amateur Rory McIlroy? No bogeys, three under for his first round. And he's eighteen years old! Although Rose was 17 and took the 36-hole lead a few years ago, McIlroy is still pretty impressive.....When did Rose do it? Here in 99, or Birkdale in 98?
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 It was at Birkdale. He holed out from the fairway on the final hole to finish T-4. There wasn't anyone holing out from the 18th fairway at Carnoustie.
Guest Report post Posted July 19, 2007 I picked Sergio to win in hopes that he'd shoot an 80 today and take himself out of it. Didn't happen. I don't want him to win, but I picked him a couple of days ago on another board.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 His putting has improved ten fold.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2007 Well, sure, now that he went to the old man putter. I can't stand long putters, especially when they're used by perfectly healthy people. Putting's a skill, try learning it if you want to be a pro.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 What about Bernard Langer. He's got that 5'5" putter that he's used for years.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 What about Bernard Langer. He's got that 5'5" putter that he's used for years. I don't like it. He hasn't exactly melted down, but Sergio is keeping everyone alive with his round today. He could've put a lot of pressure on everyone by shooting 66 or 67 again today, and he's not even at par through 13.
CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 He's home in 71, which, from what I'm seeing thus far, is going to be a very good score today.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 Weir's making a nice charge. -3 on the day with two to go, three back in a tie for third.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 He is striking the ball very well today. He's gonna stay on the first page for the weekend. Cut might be going to +
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 Wow, Mickelson is going to miss the cut. He never really has liked this tournament, has he?
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 Didn't help from 10 ft. out he missed an Eagle and a Birdie put, then the next hole doubled bogeyed. He did it to himself.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 The course did it to him a bit too. I was reading on ESPN.com where he had to take a penalty stroke after his ball plugged.
Danville_Wrestling 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 Looks like I've made a good move starting Sergio Garcia in my fantasy golf pool right now. The guy always plays well in Europe but has been truly lackluster in the U.S. (especially in the major tournaments aside from his 2nd @ the PLAYERS) over the last several years. I've always felt that if Garcia played the European Tour more than the PGA Tour he'd have much better career results (but probably not as much in career earnings). CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2007 Wow, Mickelson is going to miss the cut. He never really has liked this tournament, has he? Just in 2004, when he lost to Todd "Alright!" Hamilton, who, incidentally, pumped my gas this afternoon. I'm really interested to see how well Garcia holds up. His major record is pretty solid, a handful of top 5's, and that's not necessarily indicative of an inability to close things. He should have charged a little more last year, and maybe at the 2002 Masters, but he's shown some knack at the 99 PGA, and at the 04 Masters.
