Guest The Minor Threat Report post Posted July 19, 2007 I'm moving up to Ashland in September for college, and can't find any info on public transportation besides that busses stop running to Ashland at, like, 8. Anyway, my last class on Thursdays ends at about noon and I don't have class again until Monday. They Might Be Giants are playing in Portland the first Thursday night that I will be there. I was wondering if anyone in Oregon could lead me to some good information on train fares/hours or other good public transit websites.
Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 I took the Amtrak from Redding to Portland one time. Worst mistake of my life. Just get on the Amtrak website and get a ticket. Be prepared though, it takes a long time to get from Ashland up to Portland.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted July 20, 2007 I've never taken the train before, but from looking at Amtrak's site recently (I want to take my bike somewhere, and not have to disassemble and reassemble it a bunch of times) the fares are about as expensive as plane tickets are, and the trips are much longer. I can drive down in my car literally twice as fast as Amtrak or Greyhound could get me there, even using their "express" routes. Southern Oregon is what people outside of this state normally think of when they think of it.. rural, just a bunch of trees, nothing to do. I'm guessing you're probably going to SOU. Good luck with that one. Even Corvallis is nicer.
Jingus 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 Just don't try to ford any rivers. That NEVER works.
Maztinho 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 I always forded the river. I hated my family... always wanting food. Then I'd die of dysentery and laugh as my teacher wonder about my future as a human being.
Guest The Minor Threat Report post Posted July 20, 2007 Yeah, I'm going to Southern Oregon. I am probably going to get involved in the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. So is the final verdict that Amtrak is a POS and I might as well book a flight?
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted July 20, 2007 Well yes, I think Amtrak is pretty much just for people who are deathly afraid of flying or need to bring a ton of things with them or are in it for the novelty factor. Otherwise, flying makes a hell of a lot more sense. What are you going to be doing with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, by the way?
Guest The Minor Threat Report post Posted July 20, 2007 Act. I've spent two years with the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival, and mostly chose SOU because of it's relation to the OSF. I might not audition my first term, just because it runs through summer and whatnot, and I might be coming back home for my first summer.
Fökai 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2007 Take the flight from Medford to Portland, or pay to hitch a ride with one of your dormmates. That should be your only options...trust me on that one. Oh yeah... fuck Ashland. In my opinion, the area is nicer than anywhere else in Oregon besides the city of Portland, but that's about it. I figure that VX is actually talking about the university and not the town, which he is then correct: SOU sucks. At least you're getting into their theater program, which has a lot of talented actors among the over-acting hipsters.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted July 21, 2007 Yup, I agree. I was actually talking about the the area around the University, actually. The only other town in Oregon I'd even consider living in would be Eugene. Wait, Seaside and Astoria are both pretty nice and relaxing too. Fuck a bunch of Bend and Salem, though. I have two coworkers who came from Ashland/Medford and went to SOU, then transferred up here, mostly to live in Portland. They seem to not exactly be too fond of SOU themselves. OSU isn't really that fun/exciting either, and that goes for their academic programs as well. Basically, PSU and UofO are the two best universities in the state to go to, from everything I've heard and experienced so far.
Guest The Minor Threat Report post Posted July 21, 2007 There is a guy on Facebook who is bringing a car to college. I'm now hoping maybe he'll want to come with, or I can at least borrow it for the night. Maybe in exchange for DURGZ~!
