Oz

Recommended Posts

Recently I have been watching Oz in repeats on HBO. I remember watching this every Wed. night when they originally aired. I had forgotten how great of a show this was. It was one of the first shows to air on the movie stations. It never won an Emmy, yet was easily the best show and I have yet to find on bad episode. The acting was great and the writing was superb.

I loved how the writers would make you feel sympathy for these dirt bags, but then made you hate them all in the same scene. I have been trying to get the show on DVD for years, but the $60 price tag made it hard to do. Recently I was at bestbuy.com and found them on sale for $13.99 EACH!!! I bought seasons 2-6 for a total of about $86. I would loved to have gotten season 1 but it is out of print, so I found a copy on e-bay for $31.

Anyone else watch this great show?

The first couple of seasons were great, but there were far too many "Jump the shark" moments in later seasons to say that every episode was gold.

However, the finale was phenomenal, and tied up the show the way it needed to be tied up.

Through it all, I never lost heart for poor Beecher.

Try Wal-Mart, I think they have Season 1.

Youth-n-Asia pretty much nailed it and is our resident OZ expert. Season 6 had more than 20 deaths in 8 episodes!

But at 13.99, thats almost too good of a deal to pass up.

I never got into the show as much as I'd have liked. There was a chunk of time I was way into it, but I didn't know the season was ending when it did so I thought they moved it or something and just got out of the habit of watching it. But I love people getting sealed behind walls Cask of Amantillado style, so any show that uses that as a means of writing someone off is alright by me.

The best is the guy with the weed brownies...we see his introduction and he lasts one 15 minute segment before the Italians get to him.

I didn't like the season finale at all. I thought Beecher should have killed Schillinger in the heat of a final battle as opposed to accidentally doing it during a play...then he accidentally kills Keller as well. Weak. Plus, it should have ended with him finally being released. He was always portrayed as the good guy in Oz, a nice ending for him would have been better.

I hated what they did with Alvarez. No further comment.

The whole Anthrax thing was so contrived and silly.

At least they wrapped up O'Rielly's story decently.

They have all the seasons pretty cheap now at my Sams Club, as well as all Six Feet Under seasons ($17 ea)

I also hated Alzerez's send off. They make him bitch to a guy who was in a grand total of two damn episodes. I understand him accepting that he was never getting out, but it was just bad.

Cyril's execution also pissed me off. When they set it up the first time emotions were so high...then they get the call to put it off. When they finally did it there was nothing to it at all.

And I don't think Beecher kills Keller more than Keller killing himself really and making it look like Beecher did it. That was a weak shove.

I didn't mind Said's death, but wish they would have done more with Idkez after he killed him.

BUT MORALES (sp?) WAS THE DUMBEST DEATH ON THE SHOWii!

It's been a few years, I am probably do for another rewatching of the series. I've seen it through completion I think 4 times now

I have to admit, I was getting pretty emotional when Cyril was seconds from death and then hit with a huge chunk of relief when they got the call to cancel it.

Only to turn around and do it a few episodes later, of course...

I own seasons 1-5 and was waiting for the price to drop before getting season six.....$13.99? Wow. Is that online only or also the in-store price?

The very first episode is a very interesting one. You can tell it was very unpolished. The different settings in the prison, the character introductions, Hill's narations, character mannerisms. Of course it also features one of the best characters on the show who also happens to get wacked by the end of the episode.

Dino Coraloni(sp?)

If that is who you are referring to then yeah, the first time I saw the episode, I felt that it really set the tone for the show's premise that anyone could die at any time regardless of their status within the walls of Oz.

What was your favorite season? I liked Season 3 the best. Beecher as Wolverine wa badass, the boxing tournament and Adibisi's coming back from the ruins to rule again was pretty intriguing.
