ROH - Rising Above PPV

I have to say this was one of the best PPVs I have ever seen. Nigel vs. Aries was fucking mind blowing how good it was. The Briscoes match was something a little bit different from them having to switch stratgey to mat wrestling late in the match. AmDrag vs. Morishima was a awesome bloody brawl. Everything else was show stealer material on any other show. A million billion stars! BUY THIS!

Ring of Honor is not worth watching. There is no pyro and the shows take place in small, dark buildings. Only a couple dozen people go to the shows and even less buy their DVD's. You need to wake up and realize that ROH is not the greatest, they are just an indy company.

Anyways, glad you enjoyed the show. I've been looking forward to that Aries/McGuinness match since I first heard about it. I thought it seemed weird that there was little buzz over it from the NYC fans, though it seemed like most of them couldn't get over Nigel not being able to perform the next night.

I think ROH do a solid job with their wrestling product, but they still have improvement in fluidity of the angles they pull off and the little story lines that they do use.

 

Also their Production is terrible. I don't mean their dark buildings and stuff I mean their editing, their commentary etc. Their production is nothing that any random joe can't do from his basement.

 

That is the lack of appeal to me as a viewer from home. I've never seen a live ROH show and I've only seen a handful of DVD from the past and their PPVs and they have a lot of work to do before the majority of the people outside of their core audience is even intrigued by their product. Because it looks amateur.

In most cases I would agree with you but the production was one of the things that set this show apart from all the others thus far. One of the most jarring things about the first PPV was how abrupt the transitions were from in ring to back stage. This show really didn't suffer from that in spite of the artificial feeling they already have not being live. It still didn't give off that spontaneous live vibe but for once it didn't really hurt it (not that they could do much considering). The use of the split screens and the promos being pretty strong (and to the point) gave the show a barn burner pace. This show should change your mind about many of the perception complaints you have. If not then it might be best to check back when and if they start doing live camera shoots with a production truck and a pro crew.

 

I'm nit picking here but one shot DID bug me a bit as a Nigel rope break was missed without giving it a close up and the shot they held was one where both guys obstructed the leg on the ropes. Those things are usually very important to have when learning newer viewers but its a small thing really. Otherwise this show was the best overall show I've seen for a long time. I'd say it was even better than Driven.

I did watch this show and I agree it was better then the last few as far as production goes, but there is alot more they could do using the minimalistic approach they are, that would add to the look. For example they use the split screen, but they squeeze it and make it all out of shape when you can easily have 2 smaller screens without stuff being distorted and have a graphical overlay so that it doesn't look so bush league. It doesn't make sense if they are going to be doing throws to the back during matches and stuff. As you said above, I am merely nitpicking because production is one of the aspects of my job, so I take alot of pride in what I do, and I think that they could do a much better job if they just put the effort in.

 

It's not that they do the commentary live, it's that they pretend that they're doing it live. It's one of the things I personally like least about ROH. Hearing Prazak trying to sound spontaneous and excited for something that's not live is, for someone who's heard him do live commentary a bunch of times, kinda off-putting. It makes everything that little bit more sterile when instead of the commentators actually calling it live and giving real reactions, you have a big move and this bunch of dead-air waiting for the crowd to calm down before 'OH MY GOD, WHAT A DIVE!!!'. Every time. To the point where it's so predictable, the reactions don't mean anything anyway and there's no point in even having commentators.

 

You know what it is. It's the ECW reaction. Big move, ECW chants, Joey chimes in when it's quietened down a little. Speaking of which, do they still start the PPVs with Prazak in the ring ala Styles, or was that just the first PPV?

For this PPV they started with Peirce and Whitmer in the ring wnadering around for a good 5 minutes waiting for thier cue, while Prazack and the other guy were in front of the camera (with the ring and the Hangmen 3 in the background) spouted off some puns about "Raising Above" pretending they didn't know why the HM3 were there.

 

Also I'd be willing to bet they do tape the commentary live, because if they don't they are alot worse then I was thinking. Because if they do it afterthe fact they should know EXACTLY when the screen will split and where the windows will come into the screen but there were times when they wouldn't even pay mention to them, or when they would switch to the replay screen during the match, neither commentator would talk about it (my guess being that it's because they don't know that there is going to be a replay posted in there), where as if it was post production commentary then they should already have the finished visual package in front of them so they should be talking about the replay and not what's going on in the ring (which we can't see because there is a full screen replay).

 

I don't know if these are things that are overlooked to the casual fan, and if so, that's fine. But again I just choose to be nitpicky because I think they could be so much better, even without having the live PPVs. And believe me, doing them live is ALOT more work and with the way they are showing this, they wouldn't have a prayer at doing one live.
