CTDWAT: TNA Edition

Recommended Posts

Meltzer announced on the weekend radio show on his website some early matches official for Hard Justice that haven't been leaked yet....

Styles v. Angle - Last Man Standing

3D v. Christian/Rhino - New Jersey Street Fight

Six women scramble match for the women's title, Awesome Kong will be returning for this match but Dave never mentioned the other girls, but one would assume the other four will be Sky, Love, Gail Kim and either ODB or Roxxi.

Beer Money v. LAX for the tag titles is also official.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised it wasn't talked about but TNA sent some guys(AJ, MCMG, Jay lethal, Sonjay and Johnny Devine) down to Mexico to compete in the CMLL Gran Prix. Alex Shelly won by beating Ultimo Guerrero. Good match. It's up on youtube if anyone wants to see it.

March-April was pretty highly praised with the buildup to Lockdown for Angle/Joe, Team Cage vs Team Tomko, and the ODB/Kim vs Kong/Saied stuff. And the Kong Fan Challenge and World X Cup run after that which got a lot of good reviews, even if some seemed to hate the Taylor stuff. I also think there's some other stuff that stand out like the Beautiful People, MCMG's return to winning, LAX's return to winning, Beer Money, Booker being awesome, AJ's push out of the goof character, and Bubba getting entertaining again.

But July has dragged hard and some seem to REALLY hate the top shelf programs. As always TNA has gotten "mixed" reviews at best. But the March-May run was the first time in awhile it seemed the TNA hating was down.

Yeah, the build of for Lockdown is always good. I think thats their best PPV every year, as it always has good build up, and the show itself is always good. And TNA being awful this month doesn't shock me. When I saw the build up to Slammiversary, I saw nothing good happening in the future. The company just looked like they hit a dead end. On that show, they had angles that couldn't have anything good come out of it. Like the Angle/Styles feud over Karen, Sonjay Dutt doing the most obvious heel turn in history, Eric Young searching for Elvis, etc. The only thing that was good was LAX getting Hector Guererro and winning the tage belts, and even some people thought he would do a heel turn on that show. Oh, I'd also like to mention Abyss returning on that show, and he has had no direction since then. So, yeah, TNA is in trouble, as I've found the Impacts after that PPV to be dreadful.

A ten minute clip from the new Kurt Angle reality show "The Real Angle" - seems as hokey and scripted as Hogan Knows Best. Gems include Kurt briefly mentioning he cheated on Karen with another woman for two years, and the woman ended up trying to kill Karen, Kurt launching off on WWE, and Karen having problems sleeping because she's horny and Kurt won't give her any. I shit you not.

-Kevin Nash balked at a planned finish of a match at last night's TNA tapings and left the building a short time later.

-Tomko finished up his run with the company and was saying his goodbyes backstage after the show.

The Nash part can be looked at at either a good or bad thing. Maybe he has had enough and TNA might realize this and change things for the better. Or, they can change things for the worse.

Tomko, on the other hand, pisses me off. I am a huge Tomko mark and was upset that he got depushed because he went overseas. Since then he has hardly been on TV. He will be missed.

To follow up on the Nash story, from tnawrestlingnews.com....

According to a new report, Kevin Nash walking out on last night's iMPACT! taping was a clash with management over a finish to a Gauntlet match set to air next week on Spike TV. (It's weird, BTW, that the spoilers aren't even online for this taping yet at all)

Nash quietly left the taping, but it appears everything has blown over and that he is still with the company.

----

As for Tomko, this was writing on the wall so to speak. He was constantly favoring his Japan schedule over TNA (and probably rightfully so, more money likely) and reportedly turned down numerous requests to do this and that in creative. One would assume he jobbed to Morgan at the taping last night, but that's hard to say.

EDIT - He ended up jobbing to Joe in an eight man tag, makes sense.

----

On another side note, Dustin Rhodes appears to be officially done with the company since his profile is off their website now.

All he did was put up a stink about apparently having to job in some capacity in a match, I don't see how its anything but a bad thing since it's Nash being Nash and nobody gives this idiot boundaries or repercussions for his unprofessional actions. It really is nothing more than that. What should Nash be "having enough" of anyway, theres nothing that needs to be changed for the better or worse other than Nash most certainly NOT being put over Joe in their subsequent title match down the road here, and in addition Nash better put him over like crazy and not do some half ass job. This guy has never changed from way back in the WCW days, still the titbaby he ever was.

Oh and one little other news item, no womens title match at the next ppv, its just going to be Love, Sky, and Kong v. Kim, ODB, and Taylor in a six woman tag.

All it says is that Nash wasn't happy with the ending. We don't know yet if it had anything to do with him getting pinned. Maybe it had to do with Joe, or Booker, or someone else. History shows that Nash usually only cares about what's best for himself, but you never know.

I'm kind of new here (or at least new in posting) so I don't want to step on any toes. But don't the last few posts have quite a few spoilers in them that I presume are taken from the Impact spoilers? I don't mean Tomko leaving or Nash walking out, but rather match ends and PPV bookings that potentially negate 2 weeks of story telling.

If that's just what's accepted in these threads and I'm being too sensitive, fine. I can avoid this thread as well as the spoiler threads. I just thought I'd say something.

EDIT: And both "spoilers" seem reasonably minor and ones that probably could have been seen coming based on other things. But still.

Some of the ppv match announcements could, I suppose, be spoiler tagged, and I can change such if its an issue. Sans with the finish regarding Tomko.

Like I said, if its kosher and normal for the board and these threads no biggie. Getting spoiled is sort of the risk you take scouring around the internet and messageboards. And in terms of spoilers those are pretty minor. I just thought I'd mention it since it is stuff I'd normally try to stay clean on.

But I'm kind of hardcore about going into some shows clean as I even don't like that the subtitles on the spoiler threads reveal what match is the main event or what story won't be resolved this week. And I can't reasonably call those "spoilers." So I think its safe to say there's a good chance I'm just a bit too sensitive to spoilers in this regard.

Tomko hadn't been a part of the Japanese wrestling scene since March of this year, though. New Japan released him because his asking price was too high. I expect him to show up back with WWE, actually.

So at least there is some good news then.

Fucking eh, the more I watch this the more I can't comprehend how they think they are doing things right. They are like America's version of HUSTLE with all the goofy parody wrestlers running around.

*palm slap*

Apollo Creed

Mini Scott Steiner

Ice Cold Shark Boy

Super Eric

Curry Man

oye.

And Joe looked fat in his lovely blue shirt tonight.

Of all those goofs the only one I find consistently fun is Curry Man, mainly because his gimmick is so bizarre and original that it doesn't seem like a ripoff of anyone.

Personally I don't put Petey in that same category just because its less of a parody and more of a protege thing. But with Steiner absent it does kind of mix with the rest. And yeah, the X Division has been too comedy based for awhile and I think its the big reason the division is down. You can include Jimmy Rave in on that. Curry Man works and I think Sharkboy works with him, but I'd love to see Lethal dump the Macho Man voice and Creed just tone down his appearance a little. He really doesn't do an Apollo Creed character, just an energetic guy, so simply ditching the USA tights could go a long way without taking anything from him. And for awhile there I was hoping to see Kaz get the X title just because (a) it would give him some direction and take him out of this underdog thing he's been doing for awhile and (b) it would have given the X division a straight wrestler as its champion to maybe make it look less like a comedy division.

just randomly turned on TNA. Is Daivari seriously doing a Muhammad Hassan gimmick? Really?

I guess you could consider it that in some way, but what Daivari is saying doesn't seem like a racial thing like the Hassan stuff, and instead seems like its saying how poor and dirty America's streets are. I don't know why he has a different name now, since he was in the World X Cup as Daivari.

Well, having all of these colorful and weird characters running around is what they get from hiring Russo, as he has always created weird characters for the wrestlers to try and get them over. Even in WCW.

Of course, HUSTLE works entirely due to its own self-awareness as a parody, and its uniqueness as a novelty in the Japanese market. TNA is niether.

Ice Cold Shark Boy

Super Eric

A parody that would only be relevant ten years ago, about a wrestler who retired 5 years ago. Combine that with a parody that was first done by thier competition 7 years ago. People give McMahon shit for being out of touch?

Nigger's Samoan, what's he gonna do?

I liked Impact better when it was only an hour long. Less is more, especially when it comes to TNA.

I don't know about that. I remember thinking those early Russo 1 hour 2006 shows being really bad. Those shows as a whole were probably worse than the ones that had that Jarrett/Hebner/Larry Z nonsense. Its like Russo tried to cram in a 2 hour show into 1 hour, and it was a mess. Everything was so lightning paced that it seemed like it was over before it begun.

Yeah, everything done during the one hour days was, nine out of ten times, extremely rushed to the max, to try to fit the entire roster on a one hour show. The pacing issue is way better now, and actually since they have gone two hours, alot of these shows have been much stronger with the workrate as well as angles that actually mean something in cases. The one hour Impact days hardly had anything memorable, generally speaking.

Say what. The pacing isn't any better now than it was then. Everything is still extremely rushed and TNA has continued to try and cram in what they can, always speeding ahead to whatever is next and never allowing time for anything to sink in.
